Pruning 'Midnight Wine' Weigela
Comments (9)A little late, but I had the same question. I don't suppose you really have to prune it at all, but the best time to do it is after it blooms - as soon as the flowers fade, since they bloom on last year's growth. If you haven't done it yet, you could probably still prune it now - just be careful of the buds. Comments (1)I would use the spirea at the Church. Reason...the weigela performs best with moist soil & requires early spring pruning. The spirea adapts to dry soil quite well & shouldn't need much pruning except to rejuvenate it every few years. So, I believe the spirea would be the easier keeper for the spot you've described....See MoreWeigela 'Midnight Wine'
Comments (3)Midnight Wine would rarely need pruning for size, it's a very small shrub by itself. In my garden it's 1x2' after 4 years. To promote branching you may LIGHTLY (realy lightly!) prune it back right after the flowering....See MoreWANTED: Weigela florida 'Midnight Wine'
