Why did my wintersweet die?

I'm puzzled. We had a mild winter, and it is an established shrub. (Officially it's hardy in zone 6, but nobody grows it around here, and it has a reputation for some tenderness.) Hard to imagine winter cold got it in a year the pineapple sage is coming back.

It flowered well this winter, as usual, but did not leaf out.

It's not completely dead. One very thin trunk is getting leaves on its lowest two branches.

What was unusual was the extremely dry April. But if that was sufficient to kill it, why is the little trunk alive, and why doesn't my whole garden look awful? I did some watering, but it never occurred to me to worry about the roots of the wintersweet; I was thinking of the hellebores that surround it. Maybe the watering came too late?

Any thoughts?
