Hollyhock Question

I have a thin flower bed along a fence which is about 24" wide and 12' long. I wouldn't mind putting some hollyhocks there but since no one grows them around here I can't even remember how they grow. I know they are tall with pretty flowers (and I do like the cottage look) but I can't remember how full they are. I would like something that added a little privacy as we have a pool there with a public path on the other side of the fence. Is the foliage fairly dense? Can I plant them relatively close to one another? Thanks. Last year I tried sunflowers and wasn't too happy since the critters seemed to love them. They were torn apart pretty quickly.
