hollyhock questions

A friend on a gardening list has shared some hollyhock seeds with me. I wasn't familiar with hollyhocks, so I've done a little bit of reading up to learn something about them. From what I've read, it sounds like I can sow the seeds right into the ground in the spring in a sunny location. Does this sound right?

Do all varieties only flower the 2nd year?

Also, I read a lot about rust. Does rust just come with the territory if I want to grow hollyhocks, or are there things I can do to avoid it?

If they do get rust, will it be confined to the hollyhocks, or can it also spread to my other plants?

I'm not sure what variety I have, but I can ask my friend who sent them if she knows if that's important.

Thanks,

~Angie
