I only know Banshee, but it suckers amazingly here in Sacramento and would get my money if we were betting on which one would win the fight.

Do not expect much from Stanwell Perpetual. Mine is grafted in an attempt to get it over the creepy-crawlies, and hasn't suckered anything in more than ten years. It's not a good cold weather rose.

Michael, I'll add Electron to the deer-proof list. Some hybrid teas with huge, gorgeous, flowers are complete sociopaths. Thank you for the welder's gloves tip. I could really use some. Perhaps I could slip another pair of gloves underneath if the welder's are too large. Stanwell has the advantage at the moment. Campanula, you've reinforced my decision to avoid Madame LL. I, too, was once tempted by a generous description but saved by good fortune. Sometimes it serves one well to hit the ceiling of a gardening budget. You DO write books, don't you? No one could top your final description of Madame! Sweet briars: it does make a difference, doesn't it, when one walks into the relationship with the expectation of arming to the teeth? Catspa--Alba Odorata and Fakir's Delight. 1/2 inch thorns. I pulled out a ruler and looked at the 1/2 inch mark. Eeeouwww, AO! "Fakir's Delight" must be one of those sinister tongue-to-the-cheek expressions like "iron maiden." Kate, don't you love it when no one informs you that the roses you are selecting are genetic mutants resulting from some kind of Island of Dr. Moreau cross with a Tyrannosaurus rex? One never discovers the fact until the roses have rooted to the other side of the globe and wedged themselves between the foundation and a stand of precious and expensive perennials in an exceptionally narrow bed smack against your front door. Forestrose, OMG, this dates back to '08. Now, it's '12. You may not even have the same email. So, if you reply, it will be nothing short of a miracle. I can't fulfill your request for the lavender roses. But, was hoping that I could ask for some healthy cuttings from you Kazanlik if that is even a remote possibility. Heck, I think I'd be interested in just seeing pics of your rose garden. It must be tremendous. Well, sending this note is worth the effort. I hope to hear back from you, but I might turn blue if I hold my breath too long. I do hope your garden is a beauty this year. Thanks for replying. Xtal

Wow! I stepped away from this thread for a few hours, and when I came back, there was a string of beautiful new photos! Paul, thank you for all the photos! Tour de Malakoff and Madame Hardy are two of the loveliest old roses, and each one is surely a contender for best in class. Tour de Malakoff may be my favorite Centifolia. There's a photo in one of Peter Beale's books which captures Tour de Malakoff, William Lobb and apricot tulips all tangled together. That one photo of violet-mauve-grey TdM ignited love at first sight many years ago. It still strikes me as odd that most people I meet have never heard of TdM...or so many other classic old roses. Even Madame Hardy, whose blooms are about as close to perfection as any white rose ever comes. Your Marbree seedling is both fascinating and completely charming! Its shade of pink falls into that silvery-lavender range that inspires me to believe in fairies, and the speckling just adds to the illusion, as if the fairies gave the petals a good dusting before flying off to tend other flowers, I wish ALL your roses were in commerce! How can this rose NOT be in gardens everywhere? I love the mossiness of "Nutshop" and would be thrilled if you get a chance to snap a picture of an open bloom! If speckled, silvery pink roses are gifted to us by fairies, surely Moss roses are where fairies reside when they are at rest. I will have to disagree with MG on Stanwell Perpetual not being a good cold weather rose. It is a fine rose in my zone 4. I never have winter dieback and all I ever do is prune out a bit of old wood each year. I have two (own root) and there are no suckering problems at all. They are both planted in informal "hedge" rows of roses with their neighboring roses quite close. The one has small neighbors and has grown into a quite perfect mound. The other has a large rose on one side and so is a bit taller and more arching in an attempt to get its share of sunlight. They both bloom their hearts out for me.

I've seen 'Banshee' sucker up to 12 feet from the parent plant. You've been warned ;-)

My Banshee has traveled under the fence, and into the alley..it is an amazingingly agile rose!

If you don't want a rose to sucker, pick roses that tend not to sucker. Suckering can be a very good thing for the right place. With so many roses to choose from, why would you want to "risk" suckering if the spot in the garden does not call for it. I don't mean to come across as critical, but, the suckering of some roses is a definite advantage for the right spot.

rosa rugosa alba will sucker up all your other roses, chew them up & spit them out.

i'm on an eradication mission, but my money is on the RRA.

Keeping the 'Banshee' apart is a good idea. Keeping the rugosas apart, or under strict control, would also be a good idea. I don't believe you have much to fear from 'Stanwell Perpetual'; mine in zone 4 is on its own roots and hasn't suckered yet, nor have the ones I've seen here that were grafted but have probably gone own-root. Not that it won't, but I don't think it's a rampant spreader.

But the real question is this: where on earth did you manage to get 'Prairie Peace'? Do you know how rare that rose is, and how many people are dying to get their hands on one? Treat it well, and if you do have suckers, please consider passing them around.

I never said that I did not want them to sucker or that I failed to understand their proclivity to do so. I was seeking advice as to how rampant that suckering might be. Some roses (Prairie Peace for example) sucker at quite a slow rate and therefore can be manageable in a mixed bed. Some (looks like Banshee & R. Rugosa Alba qualify) sucker so madly they seem to want to take over the world. I was trying to give these roses a location that suited them and avoid a placement regretting nightmare down the raod.

You have no idea how hard I have tried to talk myslef out of Banshee. Not only is the mysterious history captivating, but the name also has relevance in our household the minute I told DH it existed he had to have it.

Looks like both Alba and Banshee are going to need a place to stretch out. Thanks to all for the help

Good call on 'Banshee', by the way. I adore it for probably all the same reasons - and it hasn't gone too crazy, but then, I have it in places where it can't wander off too far or too easily (pockets of good soil surrounded by poorer, rockier soil with more shade). One whiff and you'll never begrudge it for sometimes failing to open properly, plus I find it a beautiful plant even out of bloom.

Oh, I just noticed you live in Canada. Duh. That's how you managed to find 'Prairie Peace'! But it's still rare even up there, so I still hope you can help to spread it around so it never risks going extinct :)

Thanks so much for the info, I know that it will be a good call in the long run which is why I am trying to find a way we can exist in harmony...lol even if it earns a "does not play well with others" t-shirt.

I am glad to hear the consensus that Stanwell Perpetual is better behaved, I can't fit too many in the yard that are hell bent on taking over.

As to Prairie Peace I have lusted after it for many years and know just how rare it is. I am thrilled to bits to be getting one finally, and may have "dibs" on a J5 as well. Although the yard is only so big and the natural inclination is to plant newer showier varieties I have this "need" somehow to attempt to preserve some of these old canadian jems. I have located a source for cuttings for this spring for Wasagaming, Hazeldean, Kakwa and a few others. I know the spin's are hard to root but I have to at least try.

If you want to email me privately feel free, perhaps we can brainstorm a creative way to get you a PP somehow.

I'm sorry if I came across the wrong way...when I hear people concerned about a rose spreading, I immediately err on the idea that they are concerned that their yards are only so big, and a spreading rose would be a problem, rather than that they are needing a rose to fill an area rather quickly. I hope you don't hold it against me...I also have a bit of head cold which is making me a tad bit irritable. I'm generally a nice guy. BTW...I have a summer home in Ontario...near Algonquin Provincial Park.

No harm done, I was pressed for time when I responded and may have come accross as offended. I understand that everyone's frame of reference is vastly different and typed communications deny us the subtle inferences that impart so much.

A perfect frame of reference example was your comment that "with so many roses to chose from, why would you want to risk suckering" I would imagine your choices in zone 7 would be almost limitless. Alas for us in zone 3 they are in fact quite limited. But again it is all based upon perception only. I may drool over the lush climbers, teas noisettes & china's that I will never be able to have and at the same time be dumbfounded that folks in the south lust after things like tulips, delph's and the rugosa's. As much as things like this define our differences, we all ultimately want the same things.

The Algonquin area is lovely. I hope you get the chance to use it often in the summer. I am much further north at the top of Lake Superior, about 3 hrs north of Duluth MN. We still have several feet of snow on the ground and the temps are just now beginning to slip above freezing for a few hours at midday. The garage roses are still sleeping in the pit but at least the cuttings are blooming in the basement.
