Name That Plant!

need id for this creepy pink flower!!

It's a succulent-like potted plant we adopted from some friends of ours. It was so ugly, but I trimmed it back and repotted it and it wasn't half-bad.

Then I thought it would like a little more sun and natural watering, so I moved it outside and it's been very happy all summer.

But yesterday, we noticed this scary-looking flower on it. And it's growing off a leaf. And it has creepy, flesh-colored tendrils wrapping around it. Looks like Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors.

Anyone have any idea what it is?

Looks like a Epiphyllum to me, possibly Epiphyllum oxypetalum (Queen of the night) if it is white and has a fragrance when the bud opens.

HA! You won't think it so creepy when the bud opens! Which looks like it could happen any time now. They only open at night, by the way, usually in the 'prime time' hours. By the next morning, the incredible flower will be wilted and forlorn.

Truly, this bud looks like it could be ready VERY soon (tonight or tomorrow?). You won't want to miss it.

Chris, I thought it was Arctostaphylos, too, but it's a relative. One of the Flick people IDed it as Erica baccans, and other pictures of that plant confirm it. bboy, the garden is fairly well labeled, but it's a state institution and the state is hurting badly for money. I imagine staff can't keeping up with replacing many broken, missing, or overgrown labels. The desert (especially the aloes) and fern gardens seem to be the least well-labeled because of how the plants spread. And multi-trunked bushy mature shrubs like this one are also under-labeled.

Definitely Crape myrtles. They bloom around here from about late July into October. Their leaves also color unbelievably in the Fall (bright orange, yellow, and red--all on the same plant). I have the lavender/magenta variety and in the Spring will be planting the red "Dynamite" variety.

Your freaky bud will look like this within a day or two. It will open at night and only last until the morning.

Oh I'm so jealous! One of mine was dripping with blooms several summers ago but I haven't seen a single one since. Beautiful!

Oh, that is gorgeous. I have longed to see one in decades.
I grew up with this plant hanging on the side of our house in the tropics.
The most beautiful night flowering plant ever.
So jealous.
