Sick Day For A Sick Rose Person

Had to leave work early yesterday. No hookey. Stomach virus. A major problem in the office. Worse when you work 65 miles from your home.

Its noon. Jump in the car. Rush home. Hoping to make it. Sweating. Drive faster.

An hour later, almost home. Hey look, the Agway store is open. Normally closed when I leave the office at regular time. Since this is the only place I can get alfalfa, I need to stop in despite my current condition. I can be quick.

Ooooh! A pallet of freshly delivered mulch. Might as well pick up a few bags. And composted manure. The Bayer granules that kills midge too. They carry Felco pruners now. I have $150 left to last to the end of the month. Fortunately, this order is only $144.

Home. Now I can lie down. Sun's out, wind stopped. I can rest outside.

Its 6:00 pm. Harry lies comotose on patio sofa. Nine empty bags of garden products at his feet. Beds look great. Harry, not so great.

Diagnosis? Recommendations for treatment?

Oh Harry, you literally made me laugh out loud! That sounds like something I would do. There's only a few days left in this month and peanut butter sandwiches are full of protein and inexpensive. Are you still home "sick"? Perhaps you could actually rest today. Thank you for the smile first thing this morning.

I would suggest Garden-ville Sea Tea for severe transplant shock... Here is a post that I had written in terms of dosage/quantities... Hi, Ritug! I have transplanted my new roses in horrible ways. If a poor lovely rose has ever screamed, it would be screaming, poor things. And I've torn a rootball to shreds as Michael described. But I use a wonderful sea tea mix called Garden-Ville Sea Tea. If you use it at super dilute mix your roses will bounce back in no time. My tree rose took only 3 days to recover from its torn roots and! it produced tiny flower buds the morning right after my horrific transplant (I immediately fed it the super-dilute sea tea at the transplant). Instead of the 1 TBS. per qt. I use 1 TBS. per gallon + 2 qts. extra water for badly traumatized roots or 1 TBS. per gallon for a new healthy and successful transplant rose(can be divided between your two roses and any other excess can be fed to other plants. )That sea tea is the perfect balance of nutrients that a transplant-shocked rose desperately needs...The only thing I thought that the sea tea couldn't cure was the shriveled yellowed tiny baby band that I received from Heirloom roses and I did write a previous post that this was the only plant that the sea tea couldn't save. But then just today, I found 6 new very! healthy baby leaves and another startup branch. So even this sea tea is a real miracle worker no matter how sickly and dead a baby band looks... I feed also once every 5 days until my roses are firmly established, gradually increasing up to the normal dose once I see nice texture and growth in the plant. P.S. warning, baby bands will always need the super-dilute mix, not full dosage. Follow-up post: For really sick nursery roses/bareroots like ritug's I'd do the baby band mix for the 1st 10 days-- 1 TBS. per gallon + 2 qts. extra water(feed once every 5 days), and then start the incremental increase (which is adding a tablespoon of sea tea) right away. (then wait, watch observe, any new growth add another TBS. the next feeding--this sentence I'm adding for clarity)... The sea tea normal dosage is 1 TBS. per quart so the "math" is thankfully! easy to calculate.. P.S. my young tree rose lost over 2/3rds of its feeder roots and 1/4 of its anchor roots on its 2nd transplant. First transplant was dug up from the frozen ice storm. Both transplants took place within a span of barely 2 months' time because my sea-tea fed tree rose was growing so fast that it needed another pot. It is beautiful, healthy and blooming... Dying baby band now has "too many to count" foliage, LOL!, looks like a bonsai mini tree...

Easliy forgiven Ann there may of been no need to say sorry thou all you had to do was read the thread. Look again and read what two folks said both said they may die one of which said they will die. I forgive you for misinterpiting the first 13 typed words of my experiance of patio roses, as long as you promise to read the whole thread and get a litttle more honest about a 10.99 at tops minature rose from poulsenroser Fact: dublin is not the only person I know of who said they just die for some unknown reason...... I am not going to go find that thread to repost it. Fact: I did alot of entire bed rework just to keep patios alive after 4 years of growing God no I wont be doing it again for them ones, Sorry I forgot to film this work just to shove fact on film and then post as proff. I know we don't want em to die but they just might do it anyways. Be we pros or just a lil ole rose fan it happens even to the best of em. More facts maybe ? Will that help ? Folks shovel prune all the time and move along with there roses simply by saying they became week in growing Poor performing, to much disease after time ect ect ect It just happens it's in countless threads and most never went to a rosarian to get a second opinion either. I hate the key cards, won't use them. If I feel that I must sign up with a store for their discount, I use a work number that is attached to our automated line. Recently, a long time local drugstore sold out to CVS Pharmacy. And since that store is right in the shopping center where I work, they were getting a lot of my casual business for makeup, food items, and sometimes pet food. Well, CVS has a policy of NOT giving the sale prices unless you use their store deal, so a couple of times I walked out of there having paid full price, since I wasn't going to fill out the long application for sale prices. I know they are tracking what I do, that's patent. But finally, I had enough. I went in to return some stale cookies (went to car, opened package, and bit into Dust!!, went right back into store to return) and you would just not believe how big of a deal the clerks made that "She doesn't have a CVS card!" "How can we give back your money without a CVS card?" "We have a policy of giving you $2 in CVS bucks when you find something expired on our shelves, but don't know how to do that without the CVS card!!" All this was called out from one register to the manager at the other, until I just wanted to drop the $4 bag of cookies and go. It was almost a crime that I don't have the card. And the phone number thing didn't work there, because they said it takes their system 3 months to acknowledge the phone number. Cover yourself in mulch to keep warm and have a hot cup of alfalfa tea. That'll get you back on your feet in no time!

Harry--

It sounds like a vitamin D deficiency. You need immediate sunlight. I recommend plenty of fluids and spending the day in the garden...actually spend 2-3 days in the garden. We wouldnt want that ol' nasty virus coming back now, would we???

Somewhere in the world there is an alcoholic lying in a gutter or a gambler wearing a barrel as he walks home. Here sits Harry in a 75 degree office with his coat on. Sick, tired and miserable. Paying for his lack of self discipline.

I can't even blame this on Patrick.

Because of Harry and Diane I should seriously consider putting on some adult diapers before frequenting this forum. More times than once have I wetted myself from laughter.

Poor, sick Harry! It's amazing how we can get that extra bit of energy just for our roses. Then while you're expending this energy, you realize you're almost dead. But almost dead is not REALLY dead (Princess Bride), and our roses need us!!! This happened to me during my winter protecting last year - I just collapsed afterwards, and my husband said "why didn't you wait until the weekend, when I could help you!" Poor sick Harry - but you probably wouldn't do anything different if you could do it over. LOL!!!

Poor Harry! Hope you are much better tomorrow....and big congrats on your early garden start. Now who would have believed you woud have had this done already. Sometimes being too icky at work is very beneficial at home. But you should have taken the next day off, and had a restful day of recovery in bed. YOU SHUDDA!!! You did not have to punish yourself for the great achievement! :)

What Mike said------. Yes, we CAN blame Patrick. He has caused so much pain to the old wallet anyways, so why not blame him for the flu also. It is all his fault!

4 days in bed, starve a fever & plenty of liquids; chicken soup is good and you will be playing in the mud in short order. Get well!

I don't blame you for your shopping spree. It sounds like something crazy that I would do. It sounded like fun. Just look on what you will save on gas. Sorry you got this nasty flu. Don't let it turn into Pneumonia.
