Is it just me? So sick of retailers requesting personal info!

I visited an outlet center yesterday and was amazed to find that at every single store I made a purchase, the clerk asked for a phone number, name, address and e-mail. I know this is for mailing lists and occasionally (though it's rare) I comply because I do want to be included. However, it never really hit me until yesterday how invasive stores are because it happened again and again in the span of a few hours.

I told them my number was unlisted and you would have thought I committed a crime by the way they reacted. Today I returned an item at a local store and they swore to me it wouldn't go through without a phone number until I suggested they try. Surprise, it worked just fine. (Yes, I know that stores now track returns because of people abusing the system.)

Guess I'm dating myself, but years ago this would never have been tolerated and I'm amazed at people announcing their personal info to stores for everyone standing around to hear.

Sorry to rant - just feeling like nothing is private anymore.
