I don't care for "Myrrh" I have the rose Constance Spry but the fragrance reminds me of the diaper pail---LOL although my daughter kind of likes it--

I've heard there are roses with the myrrh fragrance that is mixed with something else and a lot of people like it.

I love the way Tiffany smells------

I guess everyone will have a different opinion about the different scents.

I LOVE LOVE fragrance of Constance Spry.
Don't like how foetida smells. Any other fragrance is welcome. Love musk, myrrh, damask, lemon, fruity, spicy....

SDLM and all her sports I love that fragrance. The Damask old rose fragrance. My sense of smell has changed years ago I thought nothing was better than Mr Lincoln and today for some reason it reminds me of a home permanent my sister used to use years ago.
I also love Pat Austin and Paul Bocuse reminds me of cherry soday.

Perhaps I'm just naturally tolerant in this area, but I can't think of a rose fragrance I don't like. It seems I can detect most of them, though my perceptions are different than others': I like 'Constance Spry's myrrh scent a lot, for example. Foetida I only know as one element of the scent in 'Agnes', and I rather liked it there. I need to remember to put my nose up to my R. foetida this spring and check it out. The variety of their fragrances is one of the great charms of roses.

P.S. I will add that there are rose scents I love that I don't necessarily want at all times. I discovered that 'Cl. Etoile de Hollande', which has a potent Damask fragrance, was too strongly scented to keep on the table while I was eating.

The only rose fragrance that really puts me off is that of Glamis Castle, which I've heard referred to as smelling like a diaper pail, and I cannot disagree. The rose does well for me and the overall look pleases me so I just don't stick my nose into the blooms. Fortunately the scent doesn't seem to carry in the air.

Even "diaper pail" Glamis Castle smells good to me. Real diaper pails, on the other hand...

I love the fragrance of Constance Spry, which is supposed to be a pure myrrh, but there are other Austins with a mixed myrrh and something else fragrance that I find offensive. Fair Bianca had an unpleasant scent to me.

There are other roses I love in the garden but are too cloying and strong in close quarters and make me sneeze. SDLM is one of those roses that gives me fits if I take her to my office even though I love her.

The only fragrance I don't like is none or light...lol I love all the rest..

But I can gag if I get a good nose full of foetida. It smells like something floral laid on something rotting. I often see flies in foetida flowers, so I know it's not just me.

I agree on the "No fragrance" being my least favorite...but of the ones that do have perfume, I like least the musk and myrrh scents. I can tolerate them, but they don't make me say "Ahhhh" like the damask scent.
And the only rose I ever disliked enough to eject from my garden due to its scent was Darlow's Enigma which reminded me of rotting fruit. Obviously since DE is so popular, my nose must be different than other folks - which just goes to show fragrance is in the nose of the beholder. ;-)

I didn't care for the fragrance of 'Clotilde Soupert'.
But I blame my nose, not Clotilde, because lots of other people say they really like that rose's scent.

Can I mention my favorite scent? It's 'Duchesse de Brabant'. I've always loved that rose's scent above all others. The Antique Rose Emporium has described it as like "fresh raspberries". I didn't really think raspberries had any scent ... I just knew I loved that rose's fragrance. Then my wife bought some fresh raspberries and by golly, the Duchesse DOES smell like that!

I really dislike the smell of roses that come from florists. They have that funeral parlor smell. I'm not sure if it comes from the rose or what. It smells so artificial to me.

My favorite is R. Rosa moschata. When smelled en masse there is nothing like it: achingly sweet and pervasive. I'm also partial to Tea Rose and Alba.

BTW, I detest the myrrh scented English Roses, which smell like medicine. Ain't enough spoonfuls of sugar in the world to sweeten that offensive oder. The only exceptions are FAIR BIANCA and TAMORA. Fair Bianca's stark whiteness with the chartreuse button eye somehow matches the weird fragrance (smells exactly like Noxzema face cream), while Tamora has a strong fruity top note which takes the edge off of the harsh myrrh.

My least favorite? The tea - cuz my nose has problems detecting it. ;-)

Would anyone happen to know which chemical(s) it is in the rose that smells like phenol + camphor + menthol + clove oil + eucalyptus (i.e., the volatiles in Noxema)? Just curious - I'm sure that the scent of a rose is mixture of chems, and probably in the same rose from varies from garden to garden.

The scent of that vase full of Tiffany has calmed down a bit - it doesn't seem so irritating anymore. I'm glad that I'm enjoying now -I really like the rose.

I just ordered SDLM from Vintage - I can't wait to sniff it now! The Damask rose scent sounds intriguing.

I'm not wild about the myrrh scent in some roses (although I love the roses themselves - Constance Spry and Tamora are two that come to mind. Isn't it funny how different people perceive different scents, tastes and other senses? To my husband, cilantro is extremely bitter, as are green peppers. I love their flavor and taste no bitterness at all. For some of you, the myrrh scent is wonderful - I wish it was for me, because I love the form and color of both Constance Spry and Tamora.

Please remember not to smell non "organic" florist roses. They are dipped in fungicide after cutting to extend their lives. So you are inhaling fungicide. :(
