He shouldn't have touched Blush Rambler

As I was strolling around my property Thursday afternoon, I noticed that something had chomped off the biggest cane of my Blush Rambler. I immediately thought that the beavers are here. Yesterday, at 10:30 am...off for spring break, I saw him swimming around in the pond...it took four shots, but he's history. I'm ruthless when beavers come into my yard...they are humongous aqua-rats. This is coming from an animal lover. But, when a beaver knocks down a 30 year old magnolia and just leaves it there, ....dang.

I've grown a couple of Nicotiana from seeds but not langsdorffii. All the seeds were tiny....almost like mullein (V. thapsus) seeds, if you know how tiny they are. Some tobacco plants that I've seen are resinous, almost what you might call sticky to the touch. The most resinous I've seen was a Native American variety which I believe a variety of Nicotiana rustica. It also has yellow flowers and is supposed to be a very potent tobacco. People working harvesting and processing tobacco by hand do get nicotine through their skin and it will effect them. I've heard about it from someone who is from a tobacco growing region in the South. He told about its effects and how sick people get after their first day in the fields harvesting. I've harvested many herbs, including toxic ones and I learned the hard way that you need to take care what you're touching since some active ingredients can be absorbed through the skin. FataMorgana

Florence, think about Renae. It is thornless (or supposed to be, mine actually has a few), has pretty pink blooms and is supposed to be very fragrant. It overwintered very well in my zone. I planted a band of it last summer (late summer, i think) and in that short time, it grow 10 feet up and almost over an arbor. It's quite vigorous. I can't tell you much about the blooms as this year should be its first blooms. I did see it at a public garden and it was really beautiful. Sharon, I'm glad your pot roast turned out so well. I agree, leftovers are perfect "hot beef sandwiches", with some mashed potatoes and gravy over everything. As I've mentioned before, I'm also one of those poeple who doesn't put the carrots and clery in the pot roast because the vegetables flavor the gravy. I like potatoes in pot roast, but I'd prefer them mashed and so they get cooked separately too, usually. The only difference of opinion we have is on the use of sirloin. Sirloin is one of my favorite pieces of beef, not fork tender but juicy and flavorful, so I like it rare and sliced very thinly, I'd never "waste" good sirloin on pot roast, LOL. round? Now round is imminently suited to braising. Annie

depending on circumstances, etc., could you leave your kids in someone else's charge to finish out the school year--or for a month or two of whatever's left so you can travel to the new place (without them in tow, and WITH them safely ensconced in Grandma's spare room, or their best friend's bedroom)? That might make the whole transition much smooth for all of you. The grownups would have time to look for work, housing, and summer-camp programs (that would help them make friends) without worrying about childcare, kids' bedtimes, regular meals, etc. The kids could get just a few more weeks of school at their old school, and could move perhaps shortly before the year ends. They won't miss much in the last month of the old school, and you can pick WHEN you want them to leave, based on how things are playing out--you'll have flexibility. But if you move just before the school ends in the new place, they could meet a few new kids before the summer, and then fall wouldn't feel as stressful. Not everybody's willing to do this "park my kids with someone else" thing, I know. And not every kid would cope. My oldest would be GREAT, she'd think it was a hoot; my youngest would be OK but he'd miss us a little bit; I have friends whose son would be miserable. I'm fortunate to have grandparents here who'd be willing, and I have also occasionally found friends whose judgment I trust, that I'd be willing to have them serve as substitute Mom or Dad for a short while.

Robert, I totally sympathize. Here, these past weeks, White Maman Cochet had put out the first really substantial basal since I'd planted her. It was a big shoot, about 3' tall and growing with a great candelabra of buds atop. Something/someone wrenched it out at the base and left it there. I discovered it when the tip started drooping.

Good you got the beaver. Something tells me, the way the cane of the rose here was put back, if I'd started shooting, I'd be in for murder...oops!

Robert, it does seem justifiable to me. I thought when the goats were moved to a new home your roses would be safe. You have a lot of critters up there :-)

My biggest threat seems to be beavers. I see an occasional squirrel, deer don't seem so interested in coming too close to the roses, but they have eaten the azaleas I put in the woodland part of the property. Voles are being patrolled now by my two cats who are incredible. The cats are always brushing against the roses leaving tufts of hair on the canes. I think the smell of their hair is going to be a deterrent to something.

I lived near a golf course in Texas, and there was a beaver pond nearby. The beavers got busy one spring and removed all the crapemyrtles in 3 adjoining yards! All along the banks you could see little spiky stubs where various trees had been. The beavers kept those banks clean of the usual native trees... At one time the volunteer fire dept. had come and blasted the beaver dam with high pressure hoses. The beavers restored their home to order within days.. Oh Dear! Plant Mermaid & Fortune's Double Yellow..(well they might be too tender but they are lethal)

barbara, I don't think the beavers would have any trouble with either of those roses. In this way, beavers are similar to the goats...prickers don't phase them at all.

We have a deer problem and a groundhog problem. Sometimes I am thrilled to have a DH who is also a hunter.----
