Bought a lotus for my pond, am I crazy paying that much????

I was intrigued by the beauty of the lotus flower that I recently seen. I went to a local pond store and payed $60 for a plant. I know NOTHING about them...how to take care of them or whatever. Can anyone give me some tips as to how to take care of them to have them reproduce and make it worth the money I spent?

That is a little high, but I'm used to paying about $35-40 for bare tubers. How big is the pot that your's is in? What's the name of it?
Don't worry about the cost........they will repay you over and over in beauty.
Set the container in the pond so that the top of the soil is about 8" below the water's surface. I have my container on a plastic milk crate.
What zone are you in? I give mine about 3-4 pond tabs every month through about September.
After all the leaves die in the fall and it has frosted a time or 2, sink it to a lower level of your pond. How big is your pond?
How many leaves does your lotus have now?
If its in a container, it will need to be thinned every couple of years (in the early spring). That's when you can get more tubers to sell, if that's what you want to do.
Do an Internet search on Growing Lotus, and you'll find lots of good info. Enjoy your new plant!

Could very well be. The picture showed that I looked at showed a longer leaf than mine but otherwise looks the same. I know we had this discussion in the past but I don't remember where I put that information. My memory is almost gone. I just remember the horned leaf compared to the rounded type.

It has to be your decision whether you keep it or let it go, but that is not what your original question was. You are buying new furniture, new coffee table, new wood flooring, and more than likely will be using an area rug. All these elements are going to change the look and style of your room entirely. The piano appears to be a nice, rich looking wood, and looks nice as is. The black painted pictures that folks have posted look great also. I would wait until everything else is done in the room before I made the decision. The fabrics you use, the finish on the table, etc may help you decide whether you want black or stain. This is not a criticism, just a fact - I notice you don't have grand architectural features such as a fireplace, built-in shelving, high-end trims, etc. I feel comfortable saying this because I DON'T EITHER (LOL). Something as simple as a piano can become a nice focal point - something to put a pretty lamp on or a unique piece of pottery or any type of pretty vignette. Or a spot to do some gorgeous Christmas decorating. I personally strugle with this issue, so I would probably embrace the piano, if it were in my home, and I had room for it. I sometimes envy the rooms that have a mantel or buffet or built-in or grandma's old secretary to be decorated. Hope this makes sense! Custom drawer insert - am I crazy?

Thank you everyone, I am ordering the Lee valley hardware. I will look for different types of wood I can use, but I agree with lowspark, I had already thought of that and decided to line my drawer as she described, also. This thread has a lot of great ideas and information, I hope it sticks around for a while. Obviously a lot of people with similar issues. I had looked at the double decker types and like them but they just don't come with as many dividers as I want. All the dividers will keep things neat, but many allot much more space than I need for each item and so do take full advantage of the space. I really don't need a space 3" wide by 3" high, for instance, just for salad forks or dinner forks. When I measured my flatware, stacking it up only required 1 1/16" wide and 2" high for 12 forks. Service for 18 could be stacked in the same space that is 3" high. I allowed more space for wider tablespoons and teaspoons that I usually have more of. I still had half the dawer left to put other items, which pre-made organizers did not, since they used up so much more space for the flatware. Anyway, most organizers keep stuff organized but do not really maximize use of the space. So the Lee Valley made allow me to do that at a reasonable cost. Otherwise, I may still decide to go custom in the future. Its kind of like stock verses custom cabinets. Custom, if well planned and well done, gets you much better use of your space. I couldn't afford the cabinets, but it might be worth some less expensive customization of the stock cabinets to maximize what I did get. Thanks again for all your help and suggestions. I want laminate countertops, am I crazy?

Hi, I'm late to the party but I did laminate in my kitchen. For a little more, I could have gotten bottom of the line granite, but the BOL granite didn't have the look I wanted, and I couldn't afford a granite that did. It was as simple as that, so I chose a laminate that had the look I wanted. Should I ever win the lottery, I'll install soapstone or a dark granite with lots of movement. Until then, this will do nicely. I use my kitchen hard--lots of cooking, lots of baking, and teenagers that like to cook and bake as well. I can see some microscratches in the "command center", where we work the most. We always use cutting boards, trivets, or hot pads. It's only visible if you look at it from the side under good light, so I'm not stressing about it. Thanks, Westsider for the nice words about my kitchen! :-) So, no, you're not crazy. I too was intrigued by it so I bought a pack of 12 seeds from ebay for about $5 including shipping. I followed the directions from the internet as well as from bonniesplants.com. I'm starting slow with 3 of the seeds and they are doing great btw. from what I read, it's going to take me 2 years to get them to bloom. Also, I read that they love LOTS and LOTS of nutrients.

If it is a named variety, then the price is about what is charged here for lotus. If it is just labled "pink" or "white", then it is too much. Named variety plants have a lot of "trade value". In early spring when you divide it, you could trade the extra tubers or even sell them. It is much harder to sell off extras of unnamed varieties though. In early spring, you can find lots of people on the web selling named variety dormate tubers for less than $15. Once they start growing, shipping is impossible and you have to get them already potted up from nurseries.
