It can be confusing. For Caldwell Pink, for example - first you find the page that lists the 2 possible versions of this rose (bush or climber, in this case). Then click on one of the choices. Then look up at the top menu - at the far right is a button called "buy from". Click on it, and you will get a list of nurseries that carry this rose.

I noted on your earlier post that the rose you are looking for is fragrant. Pink Pet/Caldwell Pink has slight to no fragrance to my nose. If you want a hardy fragrant rose go with Louis Phillipe. He's red, fragrant, and gets large but totally disease free here. Beautiful rose.

I am a volunteer on HMF and thought I'd answer your question here. HMF is not a dead (grin) site. It's a different kind of site. It's designed for you to find answers to your questions without waiting for a response from someone working on the site or visiting the site. In your case, looking for a vendor for a particular rose, you would click on the SEARCH button on the left and enter the name of the rose in the search field. When the rose page opens, there's all kinds of information. Some of it is stored under the tabs... like the BUY FROM tab. If you click on that, a list of vendors will appear. The "sponsoring" nurseries appear first, then there is a button at the bottom of the page to see other vendors.

It's great when site users put up their experience with a rose because that information is saved with the rose page and you can view their comments by clicking on that tab.

Yes, it's a site that takes some getting used to using, but when you get more comfortable, you'll find there's lots of different ways to answer your questions.

I can't tell from your post what the problem or problems might be, but I'll try to help. I could be really off the mark, and maybe this is much too detailed and basic. Just in case it isn't (er, yours truly had some trouble getting started too--about what I'm not admitting!).

Is the page on Help Me Find you are starting from:

From there you can click on one of the buttons down the left side depending on what you want to do/search for. Search by name of rose, just click on Search / Lookup under the Plants heading. When the screen comes up with the search bar, enter a name and click the search button.

You may sometimes get multiple results (some similar names especially if a partial name is entered in the search), if there is a climbing version, etc. Click on the one you want. I tried this for Caldwell Pink for example:

Click on the first one (the second is the climber). That leads to the default screen, the Description. There will also be a list of other fields across the top that are clickable, same as for other roses, if you were to search for them. Those other fields are Photos, Lineage, Awards, Member Ratings, Member Comments, Member Journals, Cuttings, Gardens, and Buy From. If the field is in black, there is some information in it--grey then it is empty.

You will note it says, "Member Comments", so you have to be a member of HMF to comment. You also have to be logged in to your HMF account to be able to post.

I have not been a member all that long and don't know all the ins and outs of all the fields by any means. A newbie! There are also differences in what a registered member can do versus the additional things a premium member can do. I joined as a premium member (it is very reasonably priced IMHO), and I'm very happy with the advanced search capabilities I can now utilize. I've still got my training wheels on however.;)

To sign in, look at the top right hand corner of the HMF start page I posted, and it will say Sign In.

I have tried to do the 'Advanced Search'...I got nowhere, it wouldnt accept the name when I put it in, it didnt go in. It did once, then when it would accept again, once I cleared it out to start over and add more details. I tried about 6 times, and it wont even accept the name in the 'name' section in the 'Advance search'.

I am sorry to sound like a 4yo,but it is a VERY difficult site. I have searched in everywhere you all have mentioned, and I must be doing something wrong, I get nowhere. Last night , i found a nursery,online for old roses,on a Yahoo search for 'old /antique roses', and found a few sellers. BUT i dont know if they are any good, reputable,sellers, if they sell healthy plants, or not. I cant find this Caldwell Pink, or SOMETHING like it. Granted that is the one I am looking for. BUT I would LOVE a fragrant rose....color is not to important, someone mentioned a name above, now how do i find IT? It is like an endless circle that leads nowhere. I am doing something wrong.

How do I put up a post onto the rose cutting exchange board? I cant find a way to do that. Whats the secret to do that? Someone must have rooted cuttings of this or a similar rose? But i see no way to join the exchange board. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

And maybe just tell me some reliable old rose companies that I can TRY. And see if I can get the Caldwell rose, or a fragrant one? That will live in the deep south ,without constant care and tons of chemicals?

Why don't you ask these questions at HMF itself? There is a box in the upper right hand corner that says "share insight" and one that says "report errors".

HMF is the first place I go every morning (well after this forum) and I look at new photos and any new entries in the Q&A section. I find it fascinating. It is a very vibrant and constantly growing resource.

It does function somewhat differently than any other site I had visited before I found HMF, and I admit that it took me a bit of time to figure it out, but .... I did and you will....if you work at it a bit.

I use HMF a lot and find it EXTREMELY useful, as I have about three hundred mostly old and older rose varieties and am still acquiring more. I refer to HMF constantly for variety research and when I have plant questions. Don't get discouraged, because Helpmefind is a valuable resource and worth learning how to use. I find moving around in it comfortable enough that I think it must be a well-designed site, even if it's different from other sites you've been on.

My other great source of information is this forum. If you want a rose, or a certain type of rose, and want to get it from a reliable nursery, write a post about it here! You'll get plenty of help.

Good luck. I hate wading through technology myself, so I have some idea of your frustration as you try to learn how to use Helpmefind. But I think you'll find it's worth it.

Today isn't a great day to be learning HMF. There are "Internal Server Errors" I've been writing back and forth with Administration about. Some get cleared up then more pop up. They should have them all sorted out shortly. You need to check Garden Watchdog for ratings.

HMF is a database, it is not a store. You search a name like "Pink Pet" into the search name section and it should work and pull up an individual profile for that rose. Then you can find the vendors that sell it.

I feel you're looking at roses still too abstractly. There are many, many different classes of roses and you are looking for a fragrant rose. We can't help you if you don't even know what IT is.

There are many that will satisfy your requirement through for fragrance. Do you want us to list a fragrant rose for you? I really love the fragrance of 'Roseraie de L'Hay' it's a magenta-crimson rugosa shrub that has one of the strongest scents for roses. It reblooms and is very healthy, hardy and overall a good "shrub".

There are many once blooming roses that are extremely fragrant.

Aveo, Rose Petals Nursery in Newberry (near Gainesville) has Pink Pet. They will ship it to you if you don't want to make the drive. However, as I stated before, it has little scent.

The ADVANCED SEARCH is not how you find one particular rose. You use the regular SEARCH for that. I think I responded to someone on the Q & A that was having problems with learning how to search for a rose the other day, but that post may have been moved back by newer posts. (Just go back to some of the older posts and you'll find it.)

With the ADVANCED SEARCH, you are searching the database for roses with various plant characteristics, so you don't have to go through the whole databse to find them. If you are a premium-member, you can search for more than one characteristic. For example, if you want a pink rose that is strongly fragrant and blooms in flushes, you are able to narrow the search to roses in the databse with those characteristics.

Tessiess ... you don't have to be a premium-memeber to view the COMMENTS under the MEMBER COMMENTS tab. Everything under those tabs is still free to any site visitor. However, sometimes, there are no COMMENTS about a rose, so you won't see anything.

Using a database takes the willingness to experiment and learn how to use it...just like any other tool. (It took me forever to learn how to use a maul and hit what I was aiming at ... lol ) We try to make the HELP and HOW DO I instructions clear for all site users. There has been a lot of thought and work put into that part of the system, but sometimes, to some people, it can seem clear as mud. That's why we are happy to try to help you use the site.

I love HMF, but as I read your initial inquiry, I undersand the BEG, and wonder if your purpose is in keeping with the objective of HMF.

Caldwell Pink is a great rose, but those who post on HMF may not be posting there so that they can send out free cuttings to anyone. If you are looking for a free cutting, I am not aware of a site that can serve you.

I like to see how the roses look in different areas of the world. I enjoy the gardens, and I enjoy looking at the individual differences. I may think that a rose will be small, but may find out on HMF that is it quite large.

HMF gives me a good indication about how the rose will perform in my garden. Since I have been a member for quite a few years, I am not sure what the membership gives you that is different from a non member. However, I do trust that we have privacy, and often do not respond to those who try to contact me.

I find the site very easy to use, and go there frequently. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Aveo5 -- while I do use HMF sometimes to trade unrooted cuttings, and to send out unrooted cuttings of rare plants I have in order to preserve varieties, I never just let people "BEG" them from me when the same plants are available in mailorder commerce. And I have never sent a "rooted cutting" to anyone based on a request through HMF. A "rooted cutting" is a plant and the plants you seems to want are easily available in commerce at the mailorder nurseries listed under the "BUY FROM" tab on HMF.

You seem to be approaching the usefulness of HMF incorrectly. It is not supposed to be a source from which you obtain plants for free, but rather a research tool that collects information on roses from all corners of the globe. Sort of our own wikipedia just for rose varieties. Your membership fee was supposed to defray the costs of maintaining the database and its servers, not to entitle you to free plants.

So, as for "now what," I suggest that if you want to "trade" cuttings, that you list the cuttings you have available to send out in trade. It always amazes me when I get contacted through HMF for trading cuttings by folks who have nothing to trade. No, I am not interested in being reimbursed for postage -- I want access to whatever rare roses you may have that need preserving for the same reasons I send out rarities to others.

It also amazes me when I ask people who want cuttings if they have any idea how to root a cutting and it becomes clear they have no idea, which makes their request just an imposition on my time. There's no point to sending cuttings when I know what I send will just die because the recipient is clueless about roses, but apparently wants anything that can be gotten for free. That seems to be the gist of your post. Am I wrong?

There are also a variety of rare rose auctions around, and while you don't list your location, there is one in Ventura California this week (ending online on Friday, or in person on Saturday). There are many nice (and very rare) roses available there.

I didn't get the impression that Aveo was necessarily looking for free cuttings. Just that he/she was confused as to reputable nurseries and confused as to how to use HMF.

I think if an individual has the resources to purchase roses from an old rose nursery, they should, but there are many people (especially these days) who can't afford to do that. I have no problem in offering them cuttings or even a rooted cutting. I love to share all my plants, not just roses, with others. It's a gardening tradition to do so, not necessarily because someone wants something for free.

Cottage gardens were started when people couldn't afford to purchase plants, and they were started with a little of this and a little of that as pass-along plants and eventually became a gardening style.

HMF was down on the 4th. I tried to bring up some pages and link to them for aveo, but got the error message.

It must be very frustrating to keep reading the praises of how well the site works for others when it's not working that way for you. You have my sympathies!

It's possible that you actually have a problem with the particular application software you are using on your computer to interact with the site, the web browser you're using. Try to see whether that might be the problem by looking at some settings within your web browser.

If you're like most people, you use probably use your web software without ever interacting with the "Preferences" settings on it, so you just expect everything to work when you're visiting websites, including sites that require some specific settings with your web browser. HelpMeFind is one of those specific kind of picky sites.

For whatever reason you might not be aware of, perhaps J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t in your web browser has been turned off. That could account for all your problems with the site, or at least many of them. Note: please overlook the dashes in the key word here; I had to do something strage to get the (colorful reference deleted!) Garden Web software to accept this post.

Look in your application's Preferences to see whether J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t has been turned off within your web browser's Preferences. You should be able to find it when you have the computer connecting to any webpage. Do that, and now look up to the very top of the computer screen on the far left side. On a Mac you might be looking at Safari's name. (Or maybe you're using some other web browser application, like Firefox.) Click on the name Safari (or whatever), then pull down to where it says "Preferences" and click on that. At the top of the resulting box click where a little picture icon says "Security." Click on that little icon, and when that result shows up a dialog box onscreen, make sure "J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t" is checked off. If you don't see a check mark beside J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t, click the check box to make the computer put a check there, thus enabling it.

As long as you are in Preferences, look at your Cookie settings too, and make sure that Cookies are enabled; that way, the website will have access to your login and you won't have to login again for it to know who you are and give you full functionality for having paid to support the site. But if you have some reason to want to dump all your Cookies, go ahead without a worry; you can always log in again and get a new Cookie when you want to return to the site.

If you don't have a Mac, details of names and exactly where you find things might be a bit different, but Windows is basically very similar for Preferences. Instead of Safari, you might be looking at a web browser application name like "Internet Explorer" but it will still have Preferences settings, and you can still find J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t somewhere within those Preferences if you look at every Preferences possibility. (Best bet is always a "Security" icon or tab, though some web browsers put J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t enabling/disabling within a Preferences setting labeled as "Advanced Users." But don't be dissuaded from looking there as an "advanced user" for what you need to do. Wherever your J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t choices are within your web browser's Preferences, then go there to enable it.)

Three things to try to remember whenever you visit HMF if things aren't working right: 1) that J-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t is enabled, 2) that you're logged in, and 3) that Cookies are enabled.

Aveo, to repeat. Rose Petals Nursery has many roses suitable to your climate, including Pink Pet/Caldwell Pink, and will ship the roses to you. Shipping will be relatively cheap as they aren't that far from you. They are a wonderful place to buy plants.

If you wish to get see if you could get cuttings of your mystery rose, I suggest that you look at the Propagation forum at Gardenweb.com where people exchange rose cuttings.
It is common to pay for shipping costs, and some folks , but not everybody, insist upon exchanging cuttings.
Rose cuttings root most easily as softwood cuttings in June and from hardwood cuttings in December. Those are the months in which I root most of my cuttings, right now I've got more than 100 of them in the backyard that I'm hoping will strike roots, but none of the kind you're searching for, I am sorry to say.
I'd also suggest that you try rooting other rose cuttings before you get your Mystery rose cuttings, as the rate of success can improve with practice. The great thing about knowing how to root roses from cuttings is that if you ever do meet your Mystery Rose in person again, there is a good chance you could root it yourself and be 100% sure of its provenance.
-If I remember correctly in your previous post your Mystery rose did not re-bloom, and Caldwell Pink/ Pink Pet does re-bloom. I would continue to search for an identification. The wiry canes of your Mystery Rose added to the fact that it is not remontant would point to a Rambler, especially if the roses were round in shape, such as the blooms of "Dorothy Perkins" are, and on the small side, between c. 1 to 2 inches wide.

'Oath5'....HE doesnt want free cuttings, but would like to buy some cuttings from other FLORIDA rose growers that have these old roses in their yards, If they are so easy to grow from cuttings, why buy a tiny plant for $18 then pay another $16 in shipping. That is considered 'cheap' shipping? Every site i went to that carries old Fla. roses, the exact ones that I would like, doesnt even sell them online. I would have to drive a few hundred miles to go pick up them up, and they show no prices.

So someone HERE, must have these growing in their backyard, and be willing to trade or sell cuttings, So i dont buy a $40 rose cutting in a 2-4 in pot.

Ah, I was wrong, I really did think Aveo5 was willing to buy the rose and only wanted cuttings if a seller could not be found.

Sharing rose cuttings is something that is done amongst friends, but friends of roses are also friends of the growers and breeders who bleed (literally) on our behalf, and their meager (if any) earnings should not be undercut by the unwillingness of beneficiaries to pay for what they get.

I'm almost sorry I tried to help.....but that would be churlish....

Aveo5 -- Angel Gardens is a Gainesville, FLORIDA nursery that has Pink Pet currently in stock and their website says they would be willing to sell it to you for $12 for a quart-size pot plus shipping. And their homepage says they will discount the shipping if you live in Florida, and that you should not depend on their website for the "local" shipping charge, as this is a known problem with their "shopping cart" model. Sounds reasonable to me.

Are you willing to support this small nursery?

p.s. You didn't say anything in your prior posts about being from Florida, or directing your questions only to Florida growers (that I saw, anyway).

There is, however, another small Florida nursery that lists this rose called Roseglen Gardens that also shows this rose, but they don't ship.

Aveo, you might also not be aware that cuttings and even rooted cuttings can die in a minute whereas potted plants (which are 6 mos to a year old) are much more reliable - almost foolproof. I had a rooted cutting from one of my own bushes doing very well with 3 sets of leaves. Then a couple of days ago I noticed the cutting was changing from green to yellow. Today it was brown and I pulled it up - dead. You know the old saying - you get what you pay for.

I understand your beef with shipping prices, but ordering from Rose Petals or Angel Gardens is as cheap as you're going to get for a rose that will thrive in your garden.

I'm sorry for assuming. I went by your username, you never signed your real name.

I would imagine it might be best to take advantage of local opportunities. Is there any way you can go on a car trip around town in FLorida to see if there are ANY instances of THE actual rose you are looking for still in town or in the surrounding counties at older homes and or abandoned homesites/former farms? That way you can ask the owners of that property if there is a house nearby if you can take cuttings yourself? Or if there is plain no one in sight, go up and take a cutting yourself?

That's called 'rose rustling" by some, when they find old abandoned roses and either find permission to move them, take care of them or take cuttings. That way it's FREE, and completely up to you AND it gets you exactly the rose you want.

I'm still unclear about what you actually want, most of the signs you are saying point either to

pink pet/caldwell pink
Old blush
Dorthoy Perkins.

But it seems I've either read incorrectly, someone is suggesting your rose does not repeat while I'm remembering the rose you are looking for that you've seen has been described as flowering year round.

Can you please confirm if the bush blooms only once for a few weeks to a month or throughout the season in flushes?

If you're worried about not finding it, I'm sure it's around if you say it's as common as it was. Even I see old bulbs still poking up in certain spots in woods as I drive by where there might have been a house or path around here, plants are terribly resilient! In fact I know where there is a giant stand of r.virginiana or carolina by the road where these days you'd usually see the invasive multiflora.

I repeat I think you are probably looking for 'Old Blush' and it can be considered an old Florida heirloom.

I don't think it's Old Blush. Old Blush is a huge vigorous bush here. Aveo described the rose he is looking for as small and scruffy with pink pompom blooms. His first post stated he was in Zone 10 Fl.

Aveo, if you are not too long a drive from Polk County, Zone 9, I would be glad to give you cuttings of Pink Pet or Old Blush. I'm not in a position to mail anything right now as I'm days away from knee replacement surgery and not getting around too well.
