Color-wise the two are somewhat similar, although at HMFR Ghislaine seems to turn white rather quickly. I also noticed that most of the posters there were from northern countries and wonder whether this rose may not do as well in the heat as Reve. Reve reblooms very well in the heat. People who grow Ghislaine will be able to tell you about her rebloom. New Dawn is not a great rose for a hot climate and I wonder if the same may not be true for White Dawn. Veilchenblau may not bloom very long in a hot climate, and of course it blooms only once. Color-wise, purple or lavender would probably look quite good with either of these roses.

I have Reve d'Or on my pergola...so far so good. I have Ghislaine on an arch, and she's specatcular there. I think Ghislaine would benefit from relief from some of the hottest sun, but I don't know whether Reve d'Or can handle limited sun.

I have failed to train Ghislaine on a lamp post because she insists on being a six-foot spreading shrub. I really wondered about this until I saw that the Vintage catalog shows this growth habit (and lists it with the Hybrid Musks). I obtained my Ghislaine elsewhere though. It has never shown any repeat bloom either. This rose puzzles me. I assumed it would grow very similar to Veilchenbleu.

Thanks, everyone, this is helpful. (Even you, Robert. :) It's sounding like Reve is probably the way to go -- which is just as well, 'cause she's a nice 2-gallon from ARE and Ghislaine is still a little band.

I've found references that indicate Ghislaine still blooms well with "less than optimal" sun, so I should be able to fatten her up this summer and find a her place around here somewhere in the fall.

Additional thoughts still appreciated, especially in re: fragrance. I'll probably be planting tomorrow (Tuesday).

I also find that Ghislaine wants to grow as a tall, broad shrub, not as a climber. Nice rose, but I can't imagine it on an arbor or a long pergola.

I adore "Reve d'Or"
It is the only Tea type rose that produces more than scattered bloom in our area in Jan-Feb when it produces c. 30% of its spring flush output. Plus, in our area its' October to April blooms are the prettiest rich golden hue,

For me, as well, G shrubs more than climbs, sio I would go with Reve. Crepuscle would be another choice and is not so thorny at Reve. New Dawn is not a good rebloomer and is very thorny. Wisteria gets quickly out of control, can be very messy, and has a relatively short bloom season, which is not good in a year-round outdoors climate, where she will be flowerless for 11 months. I certainly wouldn't put one near a pool. Look at some of the other noisettes, climbing teas. Whatabout Mrs Alfred Carrier.

I've seen plants of GdeF that were enormous, while RdO is tamer, more controllable. GdeF might take over the whole top of the pergola. If that's what you want it to do, it should be good for that.When it's in full bloom, the mass of flowers is spectacular.

There was a lot of discussion on Ghislaine DF about a year ago (see link below). Some comments on fragrance as well. I have this one in Portland, OR and it does tend to be more shrubby, as is the one at the nursery where I bought it two summers ago (Joy Creek in Scapoose)

I have a Ghislaine DF that is now in its 4th season. I pulled it up to discard it last year since it was meager with any new growth, had an awkward habit, and had few blooms that were very unimpressive (small size, unremarkable in every way). To comment on repeat blooms, I'll just say you can only call a rose a once bloomer or a repeater if it actually gives more than 5 blooms in a year.... I had heard about it on this forum and it had seemed a great idea at the time. My daughter insisted upon digging a hole somewhere else and plopped it in. So far it's not dead, so we'll see if it actually blooms this year. It did put on growth and had a few blooms in its new spot on a north wall of my house. It gets morning sun from the side. I have an Eden climber that is now in that spot along my prized rose fence.
However at the same time 4 seasons ago, I put in a Crepuscule, a Pearly Gates, a Colette and a secret garden musk climber. Crepuscule is going to be magnificent this year. It has some nice long canes now and the blooms are incredible in form and texture and color. It is very happy to stay along the fence and trains really well- it doesn't try to be bushy. I highly recommend this rose, it's wonderful. I can't comment on its' repeating- it is a slow starter and I'll know a lot more this year, but there was some repeating last year already. Pearly gates is pretty and unremarkable. Colette has beautiful blooms and will be great this year. Secret Garden Musk climber arrived looking like the foliage you'd cut off a bloom before putting in a vase. In no time, it had numerous strong canes. It grew vigorously the first year and has never stopped. It may take over the city. Blooms are wonderful and are present 12 months of the year. The scent is cloves. I thought reve d'Or is a peachy sport of Cecile Brunner- that would probably be a wonderful and vigorous climber, but might only do one big flush plus a little in the autumn.

behind the pale pink Lyda Rose is gdf with the shading white to yellow pretty little roses, seems to want to be a bush. I like them both. Good luck with these behemouths.RDO blooms continually, GDF less so but off and on with lots of blooms as you see.

Thanks, Luanne, I think I've seen that photo of Reve d'Or before and it's part of the reason I chose it! I know I've seen photos of your garden on other threads; it is gorgeous.

I actually have 3 Lyda Roses here waiting on a home, but I need to pot them into gallons first. I'm not really a pink person but the photo at RVR sold me. :)

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the feedback. Reve is going on the pergola; GdF will be potted up and await developments.
