Recommend a pink hybrid musk for semi-shade
Comments (7)Cornelia once had an ARS rating of 9.0 -- which meant it was considered cast iron. It is a sort of coral pink. The buds darker than the opened flower (semi-double). I have it in semi-shade and it is just fine. It reblooms in the fall and the fall crop is considered superior to the spring one. Kathleen. This very beautiful fragrant single (like apple blossoms) I have never grown myself. But have admired it greatly. It is so beautiful that some consider it a rose to have if you could have only one. Even with musk roses I think you will have more blooms and more rebloom in a sunnier location. They must have some sun to do well. Don't forget Kathleen Harrop, a fragrant pink bourbon. It will do ok in a north exposure, I believe....See MoreHybrid Musk roses & shade
Comments (8)I have lot of HMs and most do follow the sun to some extent. But certainly they do better in shade than any others, both in filing out the bush and in blooming. I also have a Crepuscle, a Noisette, who gets sun only after 2:00 in the afternoon. She is growing against a west-facing wall and is perfectly happy to grow sideways and up and does not particularly reach for the sun....See MoreYour favorite hybrid musk
Comments (34)Lynette, that New Face is absolutely GORGEOUS. I'm so glad you're sharing the cuttings and I'll be in line to buy it when it's available! I agree with Odinthor that Wilhelm is my favorite hybrid musk, and I grow about 15 different HMs. Wilhelm is never out of bloom, and it makes a dramatic dark statement in my partial shade area where most of the other hybrid musks and shade tolerant roses are much lighter shades. Here's a closeup from spring just getting started, with Felicia at his feet . My second favorite is one I got from Cliff's mother plant sale, and it has been a nonstop bloomer - Petite de Terre Franche. I don't hear about it in other places, and I suspect it's not widely for sale, but it spills beautifully around the shade bed and has a graceful effect all summer. Here it is (white one at center) with Heavenly Pink at its feet, Cornelia to its left, Darlow's Enigma at the back left, and Wilhelm making his statement in back to the right. Hybrid Musks are perfect for my kind of "rose chaos". I'd pick Felicia for most beautiful individual bloom among the hybrid musks, but Kate said we had to stop at two (smile). Comments (4)Hi Esthomizzy, Hybrid Musks are some of the very the best roses for partial shade. "Penelope" is very elegant. "Cornelia" gets huge here in California-10 feet tall arching canes and 6 feet wide. "Narrow Water" is a very nice rose but I'm more enthusiastic about "Nastarana" because it has much more fragrance. M.A.C. grows quickly, even in partial shade, it has good fragrance and is white with blush shading. It can be grown as a climber or a shrub. It can be pruned to a 4 foot tall shrub. I have the Hybrid Musk "Lavendar Lassie" -it has great fragrance, but it is really a medium bright pink with some lavendar shading-it may be more lavendar in your climate. I love the deep violet-purple of "Lavendar Dream" No fragrance but a lovely and distinctive color. I'd like to know what you decide on. Luxrosa...See More- 15 years ago
