Hybrid Musks

They sound too good to be true. Are there any nasty surprises awaiting me? I have quite a small garden which is north facing (although it doesn't seem too overcast to me I daresay the roses might think differently) so I need to pick and choose roses quite carefully and repeat/continuous roses which will climb a bit (trellis coated fence) which can tolerate some shade sound like just what I need.

This is my current working list to decide from

The top 3 seem similar (single) so I should probably get this down to one or maybe two.

Out of these I'm favouring Celine Forestier and Danae

Like the look of both can't decide

I also like the look of violette although it's not a climber or repeat/continuous but it is an unusual colour. I was quite keen to have New Dawn but I heard it can get quite big and that it can often stop repeating.

Advice or comments on any of these or suggested replacements welcome as I am a novice rose gardener. Realistically I can probably get only 5 or 6 roses into the space I have so I want to avoid ones that don't give me maximum benefit.

Hi! (just for information )Have you seen the choice of "news" Hybrid Musks on : www.lens-roses.be ???
It seems that these news varieties are more disease-resistants and are "non-voracious feeders", unlike their
"old" parents...

R. moschata is a fine rose, that has a 3 month bloom season, from august 1 through Halloween and then some. Gorgeous leaves and growth habit and its' fragrance has a wafting trait that can spread several feet from the bush. vintage also sells several remontant musk roses that I have yet to track down when I'm there on dirt day, but I'd love to see "Reverend Seidel" in person. I love 'Secret Garden Climbing Musk' (remontant, but of unknown breeding) Hybrid Musk were once bred and named 'Pemberton Roses' in England by the man , whom I believe, bred many of the best in that class. I've grown c. a dozen Hybrid Musks and my favorites include 'Cornelia' coppery glints on pink, stamens show on some blooms. 'Callisto' yellow and fragrant, musky-rose. 'Maid Marion' 'Penelope' as well as 'Queen of the Musks' red buds, open to creamy white to light pink roses. and 'Bubble Bath' for its scent. Lux.

Thanks, all. EvS and Otto Linne both remind me of what little I've seen of my new Pomponella. It's early for me to have an opinion about Pomponella though. Looking at pics on hmf of Pax and Prosperity it does look to me like Prosperity may have more petals and sometimes has a blush of pink in the centers. But most often it is pure white, and most often the form is semi -double. It's a vigorous shrub. I'm curious about whether Clytemnestra and Nymphenburg are similar to Felicia. I have a trade in the works for a Walferdange plant this spring. Have wanted that one awhile. A lot of the hybrid musks are vigorous and take up a lot of room. My Lavender Lassie in the tree seems to have overextended itself. It has had major die back for some reason....maybe voles. Most of what was in the tree is gone but there is a good bit left of the plant. Mine can defoliate in mid to late summer too. One thing great about this site and hmf is the variety of pics, the good , bad, and ugly. The less wonderful shots help quite a bit too. Prosperity looking more typical, less glam:

Thank you about my Lavender Lassie. I can only prune the lower levels of LL. It is pretty high up in an apple tree now. I prune Felicia every spring and a little during the summer. I have a big Knockout growing right next to it which has crowded out Felicia somewhat. I live across the street from what used to be a Pepsi plant. I felt ok about that for a long time. The truck drivers seemed friendly. They were good neighbors. It is a big industrial looking place with big parking lot. So I have big roses in my front yard right next to the street. They make a kind of screen and give me a sense of enclosure. Most of our neighborhood is residential and I have really been happy in this neighborhood for about 32 years. There is no home owner's association telling me what I can do in my front yard. Purple Skyliner is not huge here yet. I have two in the ground and think I'll have to dig one up because I can't give it that much space. I planted one in a dry spot , thinking it would not get big, but hoping that its vigor would make it likely to survive there. It is thriving there and right now adds some grace to that part of the garden. It arches over nicely, is kind of a fountain shape. Some call it a reblooming Veilchenblau, but I think it is more bs resistant than Veilchenblau. I hope it won't get as big...I do not want any more huge roses. It's not 'Prosperity', but it does look like a Hybrid Musk. There are a few others by Pemberton that look similar -- 'Daphne', 'Maid Marion', and 'Moonlight' came to my mind, but I don't know if they get as big as your rose. Or perhaps they were traditionally pruned harder than you did. Anyway, those were my three possibilities for ID. :-) ~Christopher

Hi Esthomizzy,
Hybrid Musks are some of the very the best roses for partial shade. "Penelope" is very elegant. "Cornelia" gets huge here in California-10 feet tall arching canes and 6 feet wide.
"Narrow Water" is a very nice rose but I'm more enthusiastic about "Nastarana" because it has much more fragrance.
M.A.C. grows quickly, even in partial shade, it has good fragrance and is white with blush shading. It can be grown as a climber or a shrub.It can be pruned to a 4 foot tall shrub.
I have the Hybrid Musk "Lavendar Lassie" -it has great fragrance, but it is really a medium bright pink with some lavendar shading-it may be more lavendar in your climate.
I love the deep violet-purple of "Lavendar Dream" No fragrance but a lovely and distinctive color. I'd like to know what you decide on. Luxrosa

Concerning Hybrid Musks and shade;
I experimented with growing plants in partial shade, and I found that I could improve the growth of a plant dramatically by keeping it in a pot, rather in the ground in the same area. This keeps the roots warmer and even 20 inches of elevation toward the sun made the difference between a plant having no flowers and a bushy healthy flowering plant.
I keep all my new roses in pots for at least one year and for several months in the area in which I'm planning to plant them. If one location in my garden doesn't provide enough sun,for a particular rose then I can easily move it. Luxrosa.
