Sorta Newbie - Ready to Plant but Need Advice on Lawn

I just bought 6 roses (2 bush and 4 cutting roses) from a local organization (all antiques). I've chosen the best area with the most sun. It's where there is an established lawn, away from the house and along the lake bank. My question is do I have to remove all the lawn or can I put the roses in large holes and mulch around the roses? The lawn is mostly St. Augustine so it's pretty invasive, but quite beautiful. I just don't know the best route to take. I want to be as cost efficient as possible and didn't want to spend the money it would take to mulch the entire area (approx 19' x 28'). Or, maybe the area is too large for what I'm planting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Here's a pic with the area pencilled in.
