Are you sure that you are in zone 7A, and not 7B? I live in Tulsa - 4 hours north of Dallas, and we are zone 7A. I just now grabbed my Guide to Antique Roses that I got from hearing Mike Shoup's presentation, and I am pretty sure that only the western part of Texas is zone 7A.

Frankly I think you can put that rose wherever you please - even in my yard. LOL

Greybird, I would give RD all the sun you've got. She can handle it. And she handled 20 degrees here just fine - for 6 or 8 hours, but if you're in 7A, you're talking lows of zero probably for extended periods, right? So I think I would put her in a sheltered, south-facing spot just to be on the safe side. That's awfully cold. She probably would survive OK, I guess, but freeze damage is bad, too. I hate to see the new growth frozen back 3 or 4 inches, so I can't imagine losing whole canes. After this winter I am glad I'm in Zone 9. I wouldn't want to be stressing for months about my Teas and Noisettes. The Chinas seem to be bothered less than the Teas. It all depends on how new the growth is.

Probably others in your zone are smarter than me on the subject of cold, but I do know heat and sun are good for her.

And most of all, GIVE HER TIME!

She has been said to start slowly, and maybe she does, but she will make a tall, upright, robust plant, with time.

I've seen a 3-yr old RD growing in Florida clay - a good 7' tall and maybe 3.5 ft wide at the top, naked half way up. Did not really like it. My consolation was that I don't have clay. :)) Mine is about 9 months in the ground, about 3' tall and not quite as wide, and densely leafed out all around top to bottom. She basically gets star treatment and wants for nothing. If she winds up being a little narrower than most teas, it will leave room for her neighbors who want to be wide. I like the way she's growing. It'll be interesting watching her mature. And I think she's colorfully exciting all year. She has a knack for taking my breathe away with her different looks.

I think your right about my zone. I looked at the most recent hardiness zone map, and it puts me right on the borderline between 7-8, so I guess I would be zone 7b or maybe even 8a. The older maps put me in 7a. Global warming heating things up? It gets plenty cold and mucho winds, chill factor way down there in the winter. But then hotter than blue blazes in the summer, with the dry, baking winds. But really, we can grow pretty much anything, the Old Europeans get enough chill for a wonderful spring bloom, and the teas and chinas love the heat.
Rosy will go into the primo spot, protected from cold winds and west sun.

Jeri, it all your fault again for enabling yet another to the ARE Rosette Delizy. Can't wait to see the colors, but be assured I will be patient with her.

Sherry, from reading your account, I am glad I do not have clay, the shape of your developing RD sounds like what I want. And I peeked back at prior RD thread and spied your fantastic photos, now I really can't wait to see her bloom in person!!! I knew she was a pretty rose, but yours is sublimely beautiful.
