Pretty sure it's in the nightshade family. Could you get a closeup of the flower?

It's a solanum, but I can't pin down the variety. The fruit reminds me of pepino. The leaves look like silverleaf nightshade. The flower's shape also seems similar to silverleaf.

as far as I know at the moment I will not eat it unless someone can inform me a bit further as to what it might be. I would not like to eat any toxic varieties.

I did some digging around on the net, and found a scholarly work on Solanaceae in Mexico, so contacted one of the authors. I heard back just a while ago and here is the reply.

It is Lycianthes acapulcensis (Baill.) DâÂÂArcy

thank you Carol, yes please send me anything you have! i did have the chance recently to show this to some old folk of the village, i brought a ripe sample, and one old man ate the fruit right away, they have a local name for it, which will not mean much to anyone. i tasted it too, with them, very seedy, but yummy.
