Impatiens from seeds

Advice, please. I have never managed it before but I'd like to ttry again. When to start? Need lighting? How handle those TINY seeds? .. wdc

I had really good luck with impatiens this year. I do have a greenhouse, but i don't think it had much to do with them germinating.
I simply threw seeds on damp soil, and kept it damp. The seeds started germinating in about 2 weeks. I have gotten hundreds of seeds to germinate like that.
The seeds were fresh from my plants last summer, but this has been super easy.

I find that the seeds germinate best with constant temperature around 75F and high humidity. I have found that seedlings at the radicle stage are killed by cool night temperatures, anything below 60F-65F depending on the variety.

Good news everyone! I started my impatiens March 1st and today is March 5th and they all are sprouting! Yay! I can barely believe how quick they germinated the packet says for one flat in 14-21 days the other flat ( different variety impatiens) says 21-28 days till germination. All I can say is thats a blessing for sure! I been keeping the light on the seeds 24/7 and it has been a steady temp between 73-78 (soil temp) since I turned the one out of two light fixtures off the second day. I will most likely remove the dome once the seeds have lost there shell. Then once they all are completely germinated I will turn the light off at night, it generally doesn't fall below 65f when the light is off. Does this sound like a good idea???

I planted 3 packets of impatiens seeds (each packet in a different container), about 4 weeks ago, into pots, using moist potting soil, that were covered with plastic and used bottom heat. I used bright fluorescent lights. House temp was about 20 c (70 f ?) after about 1 week, one pot germinated. Time went by, and the other two pots showed no life... Until a couple of days ago. Now there are many small seedlings in the "lifeless" pots. Conditions seemed identical, only the flower colours differed. Anyway, if at first there is no progress, don't give up hope.

not under humidity dome. Biggest cause of dampening off which i constantly fight. Two days ago spent all day at an annual grower that supplies all of west MI Home Depot. green houses as big as foot ball fields. Asked all kinds of questions. There starting mix is 80% peat, 12% vermiculite, 8% pearlite. Fanatical on hygene and eliminating pathogins. Even had to step on Chlorex soaked pads before entering green houses. Both for controlling disease to seedlings and for eleminating any disease as they ship across state lines. They do not cover seeds, was told almost all seeds germinate uncovered as they do in nature, My guide said no problem getting impatients going. Start New Guiney from cuttings, just stick into same potting mix and NO hormone powder---too harsh. The whole secret is humidity, heat and light They heat from bottom to 72. Air circulation important in eliminating dampening off, also keeping surface dry and using a sterile mix, They don't even use trays over again. Send to plastic recycler to grind up and remold. more efficient than a Chlorine wash. they Add 2% chlorine to water as they have well water. City water is 3.5% also use both a basic and acidic liquid fert added to misters and drip system. . I'm starting to add 2% chlorine as i have well water and have sterilized all starting medium in the microwave 3 min until it reaches 200. I am experimenting with some impatient seeds in a wet paper towel/plastic bag in a sunny window. This will determine rate of germination

Growing impatience from seed should have been started indoors with heat and under light at least by Feb.. Sorry to tell you that, but as the name implies, you cannot be impatient. The seed is so small, and requires warm soil to germinate. I usually start them indoors with germinating mix, spread them on the top of the mix and keep moist with a spray bottle until the cotyledens emerge from the seed then, cover lightly and mist again. It sounds like you may have covered up those poor seeds and they will have no change to germinate under the large chunks of bark. Sorry, maybe you can try some indoors now just fo learn how. I agree,super easy.Just sow on moist soil,put under lights and keep moist.Mine are in a room that is around 60 degrees and very dry,so I don't understand all the talk about bottom heat and humidity.I never do this for any seeds and grow hundreds of plants from seed every year with no problems.Why make things complicated,keep things simple and they will grow.

Now is a great time to start your impatiens from seed. I started mine super early and already have blooms under lights. Surface sow seeds with something over the top to keep in humidity until after germination. A little bottom heat will speed up germination. Impatien seeds need light also to germinate. They are fairly easy seeds to start but will start off slow but won't take long to get going with good lighting.
I don't know what part of MD you are in but we usually put out impatiens mid to late may which gives you 10 weeks. Mine were blooming within the 10 wk period.

I've had the best luck germinating these in coffee filters. Make sure they're in a light area and bottom heat helps.
