Name That Plant!

Orange Thistle-like flower

This flower has us stumped at the Far North forum. The pic was taken by a member with no way to upload (from zone 3) so I'm posting it for her. Apparently two members have it volunteering in their gardens. They say the edges of the leaves have tiny spines.

Hummm.... maybe, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be sun spot since the eye is dark around the outer rim. Sun spot photos look like the inner circle of the eye is dark and the outer circle is lighter.

Your picture. We really need a closer view of leaves and flowers. From what I can see in this picture it looks more like a vine on a support than a shrub. Maybe Campsis radicans or Tecoma?

Ixora, also known as Cruz de Malta, is a tropical shrub not related to hydrangeas but one whose bloom form resembles that of mopheads. It comes in a variety of colors, red, yellow, white, etc. and I would not be surprised if it available for sale at the entrance of many Walmarts this time of the year. Unfortunately, as far as I know. there is no such thing as an orange hydrangea bloom. Yet. The closest may be Matisse's blooms, after they starts to fade (you may need to use your imagination to make it look orange sometimes. Ha!). Ego45 pointed that out some years ago.

I normally suggest the following list when people ask for "where can I get seeds" on the Herbs forum, my usual haunt. Since safflower is "poor man's saffron," I'm sure some of these vendors must stock it:

We figured out that both far north members who got volunteers probably got it out of their birdseed. Apparently it is desirable for birdseed because squirrels don't like it.

You can find bags of safflower seed with birdseed. What you don't plant, you can put in your feeders.

This is a first year finding this type thistle several places in foundation plantings. I am not a fan of thistles as they spread so invassively, but it is an interesting plant. Sorry, safflower, but you must go.
