thornless roses
Comments (16)Take a look at Annie Laurie McDowell, a climber I am very proud of. It is a seedling of Renae. Renae has been condemned forever as not being "reliably hardy". Annie Laurie McDowell is available from Burlington Roses and Bierkreek in The Netherlands. The email last night from Bierkreek stated she is doing quite well and becoming popular in Germany. Interesting! Lynnie, a Basye's Legacy seedling of mine is very cold and heat tolerant, highly disease resistant and usually very light on prickles, with some plants being free from them completely. Also available from Burlington. Ralph Moore's My Stars, another Legacy hybrid, is totally thornless as is his Gina's Rose. A very early, completely thornless rose of Mr. Moore's is Cl Yellow Sweetheart. The story of this "lost" rose's rediscovery and reintroduction can be found on HMF under the title, "What Was Lost, Is Found" in the May 2004 EZine. Look it up on HMF as Yellow Sweetheart Cl. There ARE totally thornless or nearly so, roses out there. Old Smoothie was a HT with thornless stems. Harvey Davidson's Smooth Touch roses are very light to free from prickles. Quite a few of Mr. Moore's minis have been totally smooth, too, such as Renny, Baby Austin, Baby Jane Clare and a host of others. Comments (14)Thanks everyone for the information! You all have been really helpful! I planted a star jasmine at another home, and I do remember that being a nice plant. There is a family-owned nursery less than a mile from my house. They are really great with plants that do well only in this area. I will definitely talk to them!! They don't seem to carry very many varieties of roses. (There is another larger family-owned nursery across town that has a great website that I have visited. ) That's why I posted to this forum. Obviously, I don't have much experience with roses!! Basically knock-out roses is all I have, and do well wherever!! Harrborrose -- I'm a bit confused about my zone. To register for this site, I googled "find my garden zone" and went to garden.org and entered my zip code. It says my zone is 7B. The map looks to change right near my area. Thanks everyone! I have previously heavily relied on 3 books that I have for DFW gardening. But was just hoping that something different would work. Sounds like this is not the place for that!!...See MoreThornless roses?
Comments (4)If the pink sport of 'Gruss an Aachen' is available in Australia, it would be perfect for your needs ('Pink Gruss an Aachen'). Unlike the original Gruss, the pink sport that is sold in the U.S. is virtually thornless. It is sometimes inaccurately referred to as 'Irene Watts'. Randy...See More3 feet tall thornless rose?
Comments (31)I have Belinda’s Blush, which is totally thornless sold by Antique Rose Emporium. But what about if you do a climber on a lattice fence put up to hide it? Peggy Martin has zero thorns. The other roses I have with zero thorns are Reine de Violettes, Mrs. Dudley Cross, Valentine and Marie Pavie. Very low thorn count roses are Climbing Pinkie, Paul Neyron, Lyda Rose, Excellence von Schubert, Maggie, and Rosette de Lizzy. Roses advertised as low thorn, but which seem reasonably thorny to me are Star of the Republic, Madame Alfred Carrie, Perle d’Or and Reve d’Or....See Morestrawchicago z5
