Thornless Climbing Rebloomer for Large Container in partial shade
Comments (4)These are my experiences with the following roses north of Los Angeles: Lady Banks White - too large, no repeat Lady Banks yellow - too large, no repeat Madame Alfred Carriere - NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THORNLESS and large Reve d'Or - large and sharp prickles Zepherine Drouhin - large and don't know about shade tolerance. Not healthy in Los Angeles areas From Rogue Valley: American Beauty - no where near thornless, bush not terribly healthy, climber healthier but thorny and large, little to no repeat. Amadis - no repeat Clytemnestra - nice but not thornless Cornelia - sharp prickles Crepuscule - don't know about light sufficiency Climbing Iceberg - LARGE, SHARP prickles, bush form can be nearly thornless Martha - same as Zepherine Morletii - no repeat Renae - EXCELLENT Souvenir du Dr. Jamain - health issues Tausendschon - nearly thornless, mildew issues Climbing Yellow Sweetheart - thornless, but not well branched, long, heavy canes with enormous terminal clusters. Renae is shade tolerant, fragrant, excellent rebloom and THORNLESS. Opal Brunner is very similar to the above, only varies in color of flower and foliage. If there is enough light, you can also use Purezza, a repeat flowering hybrid of Banksiae. It does have some prickles on the leaf midribs, but no flesh ripping cane ones. It requires heat to rebloom. At the coast, traditional Banksiae will continue flowering as long as it's still spring like weather. Purezza flowers when it gets HOT. I don't know if your light levels are high enough for it. Renae and Opal Brunner are more shade tolerant. If the direct sun on the ceramic pot is strong and intense, you might consider wrapping the exposed sides inside the pot with bubble wrap to insulate it against heat absorption and radiation. It can be enough to cook the roots of a rose. Without seeing what it is, it is difficult to determine so I mention it to possibly improve your chances. Comments (14)The site has a couple of tall pine and ceder trees behind it so it gets filtered sun to full sun depending on where. My tomatoes are doing great and Ice Bergs look good so far. Yes concrete walls and patio, but I think with the trees it should not get too too hot. This will be my first summer so we will see. The area is on the north side but the beds face south and east. THe previous owners installed eye hooks all around the wall. I have put up garden string for the vines to climb on. I hope it is strong enough. I love the ideas of the geraniums, will have to look for them. Will they be messy?...See MoreVines /other plants good near pool
Comments (1)You may want to post this in the California forum here on Gardenweb; I would bet that there are people posting there who have dealt with the same problem, and not everyone checks every forum....See MoreSmall climber near citrus?
Comments (9)I have roses near or next to my citrus, however (BIG Caveat) their watering requirements are totally different. I have my garden on drip. Your roses will need more water than what your citrus tree will want or like in order to do well. Same for fertilizer requirements too. Citrus trees do not need the same amount of water or fertilizer than your roses will like or require. Also trees tend to be fertilizer hogs. Their roots will often take fertilizer away from other plants. You will often see a tree growing well with grass all around the trunk. If a person feeds the grass, often the tree will use that fertilizer for itself and therefore not need additional fertilizer. I would recommend, if you choose to put a rose near or next to your citrus tree, that you have them on drip so you can water them differently. My roses have more emitters than my citrus do for that very reason. If you can keep your citrus trees separate from your roses, I would recommend that. I think both will be happier. I do it because I have very little space in my tiny yard. I was at a lecture this week where the person stated they put in a pool (small pool) in their yard. It was only 15' x 30'. I turned to the person next to me and stated that their pool was bigger than my yard!...See MoreLil B
