seedling trays vs. individual pots?

In the past I've used drilled 35 mm film canisters to grow out seedlings, one seed per container. This year I inherited from my dad one of those seedling germinating units, you know, the 12 X 20 tray and clear dome, with 12-packs of seedling trays, so I thought I'd give that a try. On the one hand, it seems to be a little easier to set up than the individual film cans, but on the other hand I find the fact that you have to treat 12 (or is it 24?) seeds as a unit to be a bit clumsy and frustrating, and I haven't even gotten to the transplanting phase!

Any thoughts on the pros and cons of using the batch seed trays vs. individual containers? I guess the third option, which I haven't tried, is to plant seeds many to a container, and transplant them out of the batch. I'd like to get into more extensive seed germinating work and want to choose an efficient and effective system.
