Just proves the point that climbers need time to develop. Mine has been sprouting new growth and looking really good, but last night we went down to 27 degrees. I just hope her new leaves and sprouts survived. I had been tempted to give up on her some months ago, and I'm glad I didn't. I believe mine is going on two yrs old. I just hope she's not going to get out-of-control huge. :))

This is one of my real favorites. It's the only one (so far, at least) of the yellow-toned Tea-Noisettes that tolerates my climate. Moreover, it is a generous bloomer, with terrific foliage.
Years ago, we had a virused copy of this rose from Roses of Yesterday and Today. Notwithstanding the virus, plus the fact that we pruned it too hard, it grew and bloomed wonderfully for several years.
Some cable guys eventually destroyed it, and we replaced it with an easily-replaceable modern climber.
Now, we have three still-young own-root plants of Reve d'Or, all from the Sacramento City Cemetery. And these are doing beautifully. I have absolutely NOWHERE else to put one, or I'd be tempted to buy another at the Cemetery, this coming April.

When we were last at the Antique Rose Emporium, I thought to buy a well-grown 5-G Crepuscule.
I grabbed the best plant in the bunch, and when we got back to CA, I was dismayed to see that it was in fact Jaune Desprez.
Not that I don't like JD, but it had failed twice to grow here, so . . .
Well, it's been sitting down there, growing slowly up its arch, but not blooming, and we were about to mark it for removal this morning. Suddenly, we realized that it is covered with BUDS! So it's staying, after all.

Good luck with your new JD, Jeri. I remember your saying yours hadn't done well. Mine, on the other hand did do well, in another garden, but somehow the bloom to leaf ratio seemed wrong to me. With Reve d'Or it's perfect. I hope we'll both end up very happy with our roses.

Jeri, I remember someone on this forum posting some wonderful pictures of Jaune Desprez a year or two ago - it was climbing up a stair rail, as I recall, from its base in the ground to, and along, the deck railing. It was gorgeous! Sorry I can't remember who posted or where she (I think it was a she) lived.

And about Reve d'Or - it's one of my very, very favorite things in the Cemetery Rose Garden.

I suspect that Jaune Desprez, long-term, is going to need more heat than it will ever get here. BUT it is in the ground, and it has decided to bloom, so I think it makes sense to give it more time.

More excitingly, our young "Phillips & Rix Cl. China" is going to have a good bloom this spring. It's got lots of buds, so I'm over the moon, about that.

I still need to find a spot for the Castro-Breen probable 'Bloomfield Courage.'

My mom picked up a "Phillips & Rix" at the cemetery that is not in fact a "Phillips & Rix". If I can find the photo of the bloom, I'll post & hopefully you all can help put the right name to it. Very soft, light pink bloom. Bummer.

Ingrid, it sounds magnificent, I look forward to seeing pictures.

I have RdO on a trellis over a gate and it's doing very well. It's been going for a few years with minimal pruning and this year I'm going to take out a few older canes that have become very woody. I love the way it 'fountains' down so even if it's leggy on the bottom it covers itself in blooms.

I promised pictures and here they are but probably not what you were expecting. For one thing the open roses I talked about wilted, and the new ones are for the most part closed. Also, the rose is two years old or less and so still rather sparse, but compared to last year there's quite a bit of progress (or maybe I'm just fooling myself). I probably should have waited until later in the year, when it's built itself up a bit more.

The last picture is the view that Reve d'Or sees from its spot. It wanted me to share it with you. Such a nice rose.

Wow-- very pretty! I'm finally getting a Reve d'Or going in my coolish garden. I was disappointed by the blooms the first time I tried it as they were beigish, but I now know I should have been patient and waited for it to mature and develop those lovely pinkish-golden hues. My subsequent attempts to grow Reve, the baby plants failed in our coastal murk. This time I planted the ownroot baby in a very sheltered position & it just sat there 8 months doing almost nothing. But with the first signs of spring, it's popping out new growth and looks like it will make it. AFter seeing the photos here, I will move it to a more prominent spot against the house where it can show off in a couple years. If Jeri's got 3 of this rose and wants more, I know it's going to be great.

Mudbird, I wish you great luck with your new Reve d'Or. The beige color the first year was a disappointment for me too, but I've discarded so many roses that I wanted to give this one every chance since it seemed to do fine otherwise. Now I'm so glad I did.

Ingrid, you enabler! Now I have to get one. I've had my eye on this rose for a year now but your photo against that wall did it. I know what I'm buying at the Sacramento Cemetary Sale.

How do you get it to stay flat against the wall? If I could do that, I'd have room for more climbers! Any advise?

Looks real good for a two year old Ingrid. It is and will be very pretty on your wall. Great looking country you live in.
I have tried for a few years to grow Reeve d'Or from cuttings I have got from my friend's garden. I have been so close to getting one etablished in my garden. The first one I moved from a spot I changed my mind about and lost it. Then I got a heap to grow and when I repotted them from sand into soil, they died. One I did get to survive I had planted in the right spot on a good strong arch, but it was a real dry Spring and I lost it too. This Winter I am ordering a grafted one !
I did get Lamarque to grow well though after I moved it with my fist ill fated Reeve d'Or. Actually it got moved yet again last winter when I started a Noisette hedge to grow around a new garden area.

Jeri, thank you. Yes, it's truly wonderful to see the hills getting green and to know there may be more rain on the way. Of course, the weeds are extremely happy too!

Debbie, I use glue. Just kidding! My husband attached hooks into the stucco and I tied the canes to those. When a cane starts to go too far forward and I can't attach it to the wall, I cut it until it's about a foot or two and just let it hang down in the front. I'm thrilled to enable you to get this rose. I wish you great luck with it.

Rosemeadow, I'm glad you like the rose and the scenery. A Noisette hedge sounds wonderful. I think Lamarque is really beautiful and have often thought about getting one. Too many beautiful roses and not enough room or water!

Ingrid - thanks for showing us this against your wall. That is something I'm going to try. :) Now, to just find a wall....

Just remember, IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN UNITED STATES, when you show roses against a wall, that you need to consider the position of the sun, in the hot parts of the year.
If, for instance, your wall is south-facing, or west-facing, it can build up a lot of heat, and this can result in sun-burned canes.
Just as, in England, they talk about putting tender roses up against a brick wall to give them some heat, those of us in warmer, long-sun areas may have to consider the damaging potential of sun on a wall.
We have seen this, with our big south-facing retaining wall. We eventually found it helpful to mitigate the sun by putting up latticework panels.

Jeri - thanks for pointing that out. I'm curious - what does sun-burned canes look like? Do the leaves dry up and fry? Or do the canes themselves actually have some sort of damage? I have some roses (not climbers) planted (last year) along a west wall.

Jeri - you completely right about the heat of a south facing wall. I use a south facing wall now to nurse baby ownroot roses along during the winter months. I pot them up and line the pots in front of a south facing wall and the extra heat helps spur their growth during the rainy season. I've done this for the past couple years and now I'm having better success with band size babies. I haven't grown a climber on this wall ever as there isn't a lot space due to windows and a little porch, but it makes a great nursery during the months of cooler shorter days.

Good point, Jeri, and I'm glad you mentioned this. My wall is south-east facing so it gets mostly morning sun but even so last summer Reve d'Or's canes did burn somewhat since it had so little leaf cover. My hope is that it will be better this summer when the rose is older and has had more time to develop a good set of leaves. Unfortunately I have few ideal places around the house to place roses so they have to take their lumps and endure either hot sun or hot shade for a good part of the year. Sometimes I'm surprised that I have roses at all.

Ingrid, yes, you do get actual cane damage. Dead areas. :-(

We have some places where we've tried one rose after another, looking for things that do OK in that situation (I actually think Mudbird has a good idea there, using it really as a nursery.)
In one place, we lost, I think, four roses in a row. Finally I put Louis Phillipe there, and he is happy as a clam. Lots of leaves to shade his canes. (In hot, dry, santa ana periods, the blooms fry, but that's no big deal.)

One of the roses that handles that area well is Grandmother's Hat. Roseville Noisette is happy there, and so is Archduke Charles. I think I might succeed there with Ragged Robin.

Just an idea, but I wonder if painting the canes with the white material that you see being used on young trees where it's hot might protect the canes. I've never heard of it being used on roses but I think the principle would be the same and it should work. Any ideas on that?
