Climbing Iceberg for zone 5b

Anyone know how iceberg climber does in zone 5b? I needed a white climber, but those are hard to come by for my zone. I bought an iceberg from High Country Roses. Will it survive well in my NE Ohio garden? Is it cane hardy, crown hardy, or not hardy at all here? How does it do against diseases?

How large should the rose grow? Do you require it to bloom more than once a season? Must it be fragrant? How large must the flowers be, and must they be doubles (or are semi-doubles and single white flowers also acceptable)? Must the flowers be pure white?

I am not sure how it will be in your zone ,but here in 6B Iceberg is always naked from BS from mid June on, unless you spray it regularly. It is a pain to spray climbers in my opinion.
Thre are some better options, I believe.
White Cap, Ilse Krohn Superior (mostly once bloomer, but very hardy), White New Dawn. There are also many onceblooming roses that will work, like Mme Legras se St Germain, Mme Plantier, etc.

Rebecca, I've had Felix LeClerc for about 9 years and I echo the fantastic comments of everyone about him. He's among the first roses to bloom in late May here in zone 5, and he's totally cane hardy and pretty indestructible. It took about 4-5 years before he rebloomed very well, but now I get blooms pretty steadily into July, and scattered blooms off and on even into November. As for height, I think we'd be in the same boat being in close zones. Felix is hardy to zone 3 at least so I think you're still looking at cane hardiness. Mine is about 8' tall and he puts out laterals pretty well, so if you pull the main canes horizontally along your 8X4' trellis you should be able to get it fairly well covered after a while. Like all climbers, he takes a good 4 years to come into his own so be patient. Also, I find his canes to be pretty stiff so I wouldn't expect to do the zigzag canes you can do with more flexible climbers like Crown Princess Margaretha. You also want to make sure your trellis is pretty strong, given that those sturdy canes can pull down an average wood trellis in the wind. You didn't ask for pictures, but here's one of Felix trying (and not succeeding) to pull down a 6' fake iron (aluminum) fence. You can see that even 4' or so away from the fence he can easily reach the top. For years I didn't realize he was supposed to be a climber so I kept pruning him lower to keep him in line. Fortunately it made him bush out and he's forgiven me since. Mine was from HCR too and he's absolutely fine on his own roots. Have fun Cynthia

The Kordesii climbers do very well in 5a, and many of the newer ones are every bit as beautiful as English roses, and easier to grow. Check out, for example, Rosanna, Laguna, Rosarium Uetersen. RU is quite simply, one of the greats, fabulous flower color and shape, easy to grow and almost never out of bloom. Both Pickering, which may be able to ship to the USA this year, and Palatine have good selections of hardy climbers. Also look at another of the greats, Parade. Mine has grown like gangbusters--in zone 5a mind you, is fragrant, and shows very little BS in a very rainy year. Good bloom repeat, but not, so far, as rapid as RU.

Your hampered by a few things...Cold, Climate, Choice , Colour and Rebloom. There is no such thing as a "continous" blooming rose, with much pampering you might get a repeat blooming rose to hold a few buds all summer. But most roses kind of bloom in flushes. 1. Your in a zone 5b, not all zone 5s are created equal, but out of your list, only 3 roses would thrive here. a. John Davis, is more of a big bush then something throwing out huge canes, it will get to about 8 feet tall or so with support, the flower are nice however, I like this rose alot. b. Viking Queen, aka Isabell Skinner, Ive seen this rose to about 9 feet somewhere here, in fact I might get this rose this year, I havent decided yet. C. The fairy, will not climb here, it may get to be a fairly large relax bush over time, and if it doesnt get to crazy cold for the winter. Everything else on your list wouldnt thrive here, some would die, some would survive to grow and have a few blooms. The largest climber I grow is baltimore belle, white with sometimes pink undertones, but its a once blooming rambler. However, if people in your area can grow awakening, or new dawn, that probable fits your bill more then the other roses listed. Both of those would just die back here near the ground every year. Ive known people who bought Eden rose here, Ive NEVER seen it survive though. Ive seen a William Baffin make it to about 20 feet once, but not sure you want a hot pink , semi double rose. Its not a rose for everyone, but I wish more poeple would play with its genetics and produce tall, healthy, hardy roses for the north. I have a love hate relationship with Paul Farges "Summer Snow". About 10 years ago I had a SS on this brick wall next to the neighbours house and their side walkway. It doesn't get optimal light here and yet it still overwhelms. I didn't like cleaning it up in the spring as it was hard to extricate the foliage from the support wires on the wall and I would inevitably pull down these wires. So at some point I shovel pruned it. Later the neighbour made some comment of missing it ;). So I bought another and here is the replacement 4 years later as of today: It is about 7 feet tall and about 15 feet wide (even after trimming back those sections which fall off the wall and grow over the plants in front of it). I do nothing to encourage it. If it got more sun there would be more flowers If you have a LOTS of room in a sun location this can be an impressive ("scary"?) clematis

Well, I guess I will probably leave out the Iceberg! lol I had my doubts about that one. I have also bought ramblin red, and william baffin which I will stick to. I was trying to find a pure white rose, a climber, to go with the red and pink of the other two. I don't really care if they are fragrant, as I can't smell very good anyway (sinuses always clogged up lol). I have a 6 ft high, 20 ft long trellis that I will be planting these on. Or do you think just the ramblin red will fill it in enough? I hear that both ramblin red and william baffin can get pretty long.

HelpMeFind lists a white climbing rose named Lace Cascade that appears to meet your needs. I'm not personally familiar with it, but if it actually performs as stated, it may be of use to you.

How would Sally Holmes do in your area? She is a smashing rose when in full bloom, and HMF says she is hardy to zone 5b. I used to not like her so much because I'm not a white rose person and I didn't care so much for singles, but I have come to appreciate her masses of blooms. She's a classic. Someone in your area can comment on whether this is a hare brained idea for reasons of hardiness, disease, etc. :)

They both look beautiful (Sally Holmes and Lace Cascade), but I am looking for a white climber that is actually hardy to zone 3 or 4. I want my zone to be "within" the hardiness range if possible. That way I can be a little more certain of it surviving these chilly Ohio winters. For example, if the rose's range is zones 3 to 8, my zone is 5b and within that range. But, I am finding it very hard to get a "true white" rose that is THAT winter hardy lol.

The "climbers" available to you that are that hardy are probably going to be once-bloomers. You may have more success hunting in HelpMeFind among the shrub and species roses. It's not unusual for a "shrub" to be large enough to be a "climber" if you train it the right way. Here's a candidate (again, not one I have personal experience with): CrÃ©me.

I have Lace Cascade. It has climbing iceberg in it's parentage. It looks a lot like iceberg, is long and lanky. Has two or three good flushes. Not fragrant. I don't know how it would be in zone 5. Blackspot here in the PNW is not as good as iceberg. It gets pretty bare.
