PUZZLER: Hardy, constantly blooming, pink climber for zone 5b???
Comments (34)Rebecca, I've had Felix LeClerc for about 9 years and I echo the fantastic comments of everyone about him. He's among the first roses to bloom in late May here in zone 5, and he's totally cane hardy and pretty indestructible. It took about 4-5 years before he rebloomed very well, but now I get blooms pretty steadily into July, and scattered blooms off and on even into November. As for height, I think we'd be in the same boat being in close zones. Felix is hardy to zone 3 at least so I think you're still looking at cane hardiness. Mine is about 8' tall and he puts out laterals pretty well, so if you pull the main canes horizontally along your 8X4' trellis you should be able to get it fairly well covered after a while. Like all climbers, he takes a good 4 years to come into his own so be patient. Also, I find his canes to be pretty stiff so I wouldn't expect to do the zigzag canes you can do with more flexible climbers like Crown Princess Margaretha. You also want to make sure your trellis is pretty strong, given that those sturdy canes can pull down an average wood trellis in the wind. You didn't ask for pictures, but here's one of Felix trying (and not succeeding) to pull down a 6' fake iron (aluminum) fence. You can see that even 4' or so away from the fence he can easily reach the top. For years I didn't realize he was supposed to be a climber so I kept pruning him lower to keep him in line. Fortunately it made him bush out and he's forgiven me since. Mine was from HCR too and he's absolutely fine on his own roots. Have fun Cynthia...See Morecane hardy climbing rose suggestions for zone 5a
Comments (17)Tammy, if your heart is set on Eden, I would try it. I didn't expect much, but they have exceeded all expectations. Minimal winter tip damage. They bloom all season, definitely more than I expected. I have 3 that ranged from 5-7' tall in their 4th year, full sun, and another that was about 8' tall in it's 3rd year, with a little shade. All own root. I get a good snow cover all winter and hot, dry summers. I have alkaline soil. It's been my experience that French roses don't mind alkaline soil as much as US bred roses do. I didn't buy Eden for a long time because I didn't think she would live through winter, but she's tougher than she looks. I don't winter protect. The blooms are big and petal packed. No fragrance, but with blooms like that, who cares! Moses, z5/6, says good things about Lady Ashe, aka, Dixieland Linda. Another climber (and spreader) that took off like lightening for me is Peggy Martin, but she does want to go lateral as much as vertical. Lunar Mist is a very reliable climber in cold zones. Voles got mine, but I'm planting another one this spring. Isabella Skinner, aka, Victorian Memory, another Canadian, fills the bill, too. John Cabot may be a little taller than John Davis. I have both and find JCabot climbs a bit better, at least for me....See Morezone 5B climbing roses
Comments (15)El, of the three in your comment above, they are all easy to grow. Wm. Baffin has been at the end of my house for 20 years and I have done absolutely nothing for him, yet he is faithful with a big flush every spring and continues with a few blooms through summer. He's in almost complete shade. The blooms are nondescript. My John Cabot borders on red and has a fantastic spring bloom, then has blooms all season. Totally trouble free like W Baffin. Zepherine has a semi double bloom in a beautiful shade of pink, plus, no thorns, plus a strong fragrance. You can't go wrong with these, but I think JCabot and ZDrouhin are the prettiest. Are you familiar with Help Me Find? https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.2572&tab=1 You can look each of these up and see photos of how they're grown in gardens around the world. You did put your zone in your comment. Sorry, I was being daft. Straw, I had no idea James Galway would climb here. I love those blooms....See MorePink Climbing rose/climber for Zone 6 ?
Comments (18)I am not sure what zone I am in but live in Ontario, Canada about 45 km from Toronto. I fell head over heels at seeing pictures of the drop dead coral dawn pink rose online and knew as soon as I saw it had to get one of these. Sooooo figured my best bet was to go to our garden center near me. I wasn't really looking for it but another rose and saw the climbing roses and half heartedly looked at the id tags on them and like WOW!!! There was a coral dawn rose. Hahahah forget getting that other rose grabbed one of them instead. It is a move I have never regretted. When ravaged by the gypsy moth caterpillars this year I managed to stop their attack on it. Would go out every day and pick them off it. It looked like the wreck of the hesperus but realized just how tenacious it is. Has bounced back and even managed to get 2 blooms on it despite its setback. The flowers on these are drop dead gorgeous!!!!!!! And huge !!!!! Wow. Got 15 blooms on it. Said in some cases can grow up to 12 feet high!!!! Mine has shot up since I last bought it. And like oh wow I am so amazed and happy as I was out there yesterday and counted 15 buds on it!!!! Lots of new shoots on it too!!!! Think I have won the war on them. I also according to Darlene spread in a circle around the base of it crushed egg shells as they don't like crawling over them. Gets 3 HUGE blooms on each stem and one ends up having to tie them to the trellis due to being so top heavy with them!!! Here is one of it when I first planted it in 2020....See Moreorganic_kitten
