If you go to the High Country Roses website you can search climbers by zone, I believe they have a lot in stock for zone 5. My Blaze and Champagne Arches have both been tip hardy in zone 4 so 5 would be easy for them.

Above and Beyond - big spring flush and a few blooms later through the summer.

There is a lovely book on roses for the colder climates. It is out of print but I believe it is easy to find, and very inexpensively. The title is called Hardy Roses, and the author is Robert Osborne. There are a number of climbers listed, especially in the revised edition. If I lived in zone 5a, I would not be without it.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! Bella I ran across the John Davis in my searching and it caught my eye! Searching this out makes me want to try a bunch of different ones. I love the cupped old fashioned climbing roses.

So pretty, Tammy. Another good book for colder zones is Peter Schneider's 'Right Rose, Right Place'. I'll look for an old post where I asked this question in case there are other possibilities.I've seen New Dawn, Viking Queen and White Dawn growing huge in Z5a, but I've read YMMV.

Tammy, if your heart is set on Eden, I would try it. I didn't expect much, but they have exceeded all expectations. Minimal winter tip damage. They bloom all season, definitely more than I expected. I have 3 that ranged from 5-7' tall in their 4th year, full sun, and another that was about 8' tall in it's 3rd year, with a little shade. All own root. I get a good snow cover all winter and hot, dry summers. I have alkaline soil. It's been my experience that French roses don't mind alkaline soil as much as US bred roses do. I didn't buy Eden for a long time because I didn't think she would live through winter, but she's tougher than she looks. I don't winter protect. The blooms are big and petal packed. No fragrance, but with blooms like that, who cares!

Moses, z5/6, says good things about Lady Ashe, aka, Dixieland Linda.

Another climber (and spreader) that took off like lightening for me is Peggy Martin, but she does want to go lateral as much as vertical.

Lunar Mist is a very reliable climber in cold zones. Voles got mine, but I'm planting another one this spring.

Isabella Skinner, aka, Victorian Memory, another Canadian, fills the bill, too.

John Cabot may be a little taller than John Davis. I have both and find JCabot climbs a bit better, at least for me.

Is Ben In zone 6? Moses also recommends a rose called pink Don Juan. Just today Matt from High Country roses suggested Ramblin red for zone 5.

Even tho I ordered the John Davis for my North facing garage front, I think I will go ahead and try Eden by my back patio which is protected on the north, West and South side. I can see the beginnings of an addiction.:/ Thank you all for your suggestions!!

I have been searching for climbing roses in my zone as well. I may actually try climbing america since I am in the greater toronto area as well. I would love to get Quadra but have never seen it here in garden nurseries. Above and Beyond would be my first choice but unfortunately for japanese beetles as well. They love light coloured roses especially white blend types. They are their first choice in their buffet menu.

JJ I think I’m going to try Cl America too. I see it in body bags every year and I don’t know why I haven’t picked it up. Above and Beyond is done with its big flush before the JB arrive, don’t let that stop you! It’s a beautiful rose.

Oh, Above and Beyond is once flowering? I hate to admit it but JB has worn me out. I hate them. I think I am the only gardener of all my neighbours that grow lots of roses hence the most frustrated of all of them. One year I had the urge to torch the whole garden down...
