help with climbing white iceberg rose

A friend asked me to help her train her climbing iceberg rose. It is some huge triffid, sending up stacks of shoots skywards. I didn't know what to tell her. Could someone advise me how to start? Even if we had a trellis or arch, I wouldn't know which shoots to use. Are you supposed to choose some and get rid of the others? The rose itself is very healthy - no black spot.

Hoovb,

Is your Iceberg climber own root or grafted? On Chamblee's website for own root Iceberg, climber under miscellaneous info. it states "blooms on old wood." At Otto and Sons nursery website it also states blooms on old wood for a grafted rose.

I am confused....

And here's another . . . If these 2 don't address the specific problems you're facing with 'Climbing Iceberg', do a "pruning climbing roses" YouTube search -- there are quite a few fine videos by a number of people.

I am zone 5 Chicago area and I have quite a few whites: Iceberg - I have 3 shrubs and 2 climbers and I love their mounds of white blooms although if I didn't spray, they would have blackspot. Moondance - Great rose with great foliage, grows in a more tall and upright form. Seafoam - LOVE this rose. It wants to sprawl so I planted it in a large, tall obelisk. I let some of sprawl out the sides at the bottom and then trained some of it to grow up the center of the obelisk and then out as it goes up and I also have a Ville de Lyon clematis growing on the outside of the obelisk. The two together are just fantastic. Snow Beauty - Hardy, reliable, takes snow and salt like a champ which is what I wanted since it is planted out by the street and has pretty single white blooms that repeat well. Blanc Double de Coulbert - I have two of these and they are quickly becoming favorites. They are hardy rugosas with beautiful clear white blooms. I really like the dark, healthy foliage of rugosas.

If I grew iceberg in Virginia, it would lose all of its leaves also because of blackspot fungus (BS). Some roses are more susceptible to BS than others. If you want leaves on your iceberg, you can spray it with a fungicide (tebuconazole is a good choice). Or you might prefer to replace your iceberg with a different, more BS resistant rose.

jacqueline9CA Those are fantastic pictures! I hope I can eventually create something so tranquil. It looks liken you paired it with maybe a Jackmanii clematis? It seems they pair really well together. I actually have been thinking about planting a rose with my jackmanii. Have you had much trouble with them overpowering each other? It looks like it also gets to be in the 15' range for height for you? Do you zigzag it to increase the horizontal lengths to increase blooming? I am trying to think how I could incorporate it with my jackmanii and still get good coverage on the large lattice I have set up. I didn't think I wanted something that would be big.... but maybe I do since I have a 4' by 14' lattice with the clematis, and so far the clematis doesn't fully cover things up yet so it makes me think I could afford to over plant here. Patti W - Thanks for the heads up about potential cane hardiness issues. I am in Boise Idaho, so its naturally pretty dry here, which is nice that disease pressure doesn't seem too terrible relative to what I hear for others around the country. So far this winter we have been mostly in the 20's Fahrenheit for lows, but the last few days have been in the 0-5 degree range for the lows. I am trying to be extra conservative to my already conservative guesses for climbers. Iceberg blooms on old wood I am reading so cane hardiness is definitely something I care about.

vaporvac - I've had 2 Cloud10s. The first one was so wimpy with tiny little flowers and never climbed. The second one started out the same but I fertilized it more and since it never stopped raining last year it seemed to like that better and actually put out several 5' canes. It does not BS at all! The flowers hang on a long time but they will get dirty looking with tons of rain. But it has very little foliage and I cannot detect any fragrance. I put it inside an obelisk and I think I should have wound the stems around the outside and it might look better. At the time I was thinking deer protection since they were roaming the gardens all night but they reached right in and helped themselves.

Originally, there were variants of Cl. Iceberg which only flowered on old wood. Reports from forty years ago when it was initially discovered stated it was. Over time, most of those in commerce here in the US have been replaced by the repeat flowering variant. Being a mutation, it can occur in as widely varying types as the standard bush and the variants of Mlle. Cecile Brunner can. If you have a once flowering Cl. Iceberg, you should be able to obtain a freely repeating one fairly easily. Shopping nurseries here in late summer and into fall, you can find many continuing to flower as reliably as any bush HT or floribunda. Kim

Sounds like more repeated rhetoric used to fill space to me. You frequently find the same stuff repeated from one site, article, book to the next because they didn't find anything else to use and most who write them don't have any experience with the roses. The information on HMF says "Wayside Gardens says Iceberg, Climbing blooms on old wood only...", then reports it blooms in flushes, which is what it does here in Los Angeles. Kim

I was avoiding ordering a climbing iceberg own root and now I can! I'm in SoCal too so hopefully it will bloom regularly....

I've noticed that "repeat whatever they say" tendency too, especially for David Austin roses.

Hoovb, sorry to hear about your dog! We had to let our Kona dog go to yellow lab heaven 2 years ago. I cried my eyes out the whole way home from the vet. It's hard letting your best friend go!

You're welcome! I'm sure you'll love the rose, BTW. Catalog writers who have no familiarity with the plants repeat the same stuff all the time.

If you're more than a little tired of that and really enjoy reading a REAL plants person who writes a great catalog, read the one linked below. Very few roses and from what I hear, they're discontinuing them. The rest of the information is wonderful and delightful. If you're lucky enough to find their plants at your local nursery, grab them! Everything I've ever dealt with from them has been perfect. Kim

You're welcome Lee! If you REALLY want to make sure yours reblooms, wait until Fall, visit your local nursery and buy a five gallon, bud and bloom plant (only budded, unfortunately) for planting. That one is guaranteed to rebloom. Kim
