What am i doing wrong?

I used to never have issues, i could just sow seeds and be fine, but these last two years...

So i planted a flat with basil seeds, it has a dome and i've used a spray bottle to water. They were by a window, but then it got cloudy, and i moved them into the laundry room where i have flourecent lights and put them on dryer while it was going.

So now some of them have sprouted, but they are very thin and weak, and are "wilting" meaning bending over and not standing up straight and strong.

I feel like they're going to die like before. Please tell me what i'm doing wrong?

The light should be no more than 2 inches from the plants (almost touching is best). Once the plants have sprouted the dome needs to come off and you should not water until the soil is barley moist.

Leggy = Insufficient light
Virtually always. Seedlings need a *lot* of light.

The good news: get them a ton of light (without burning them) and they'll start to recover. They'll never lose that long initial stem, but they'll start leafing and start curving up from where they left off, and you can end up with perfectly healthy plants.

Tracy - just to add a bit - A. some plants are designed to sucker - they are trailers and should be grown multicrowned B. Some plants have the tendency to sucker when they are young - and if with a help of Fred's technique you keep removing the suckers as early as possible until they mature - you are home free. C. Some plants will sucker in your conditions no matter what - pass them to somebody else - very possibly they will behave better. D. All plants sucker when stressed - exactly as Fred explained. Try to baby them a bit - and if it doesn't help - you can call them category C - and get rid of them. TGIF Irina

Use a 4-1 mix. Mixing the nectar 1-1 or 2-1 or 3-1 will NOT get more birds! Just put half of the water in hot from the tap and either stir or shake with the sugar; when it has dissolved, put the other half of the water in and stir again. I mixed my sugar water about 3 1/2-1 for over 20 years (just a waste of sugar). I used to think mixing it stronger than the neighbor's would get me more birds (no way!). You just need lots of feeders or lots of red to get the birds to your feeders. They don't care if it is 2-1 or 5-1! Studies have shown that the stronger you mix the nectar, the less often the birds will come to get the neccessary calories. I did my own test with the nectar recently and they came much less to the 2-1 mix although it was probably just location. The birds drained the feeders exactly the same with 4-1 mix in all feeders. The more sugar will probably mean faster molding. I don't understand the fly-bys, but if a hummer dips into one of your feeders just once and flys off, there is a problem with the nectar (unless there is something to scare him off).

Hi Averil, here are some Arabicum pics for you......they are of the Bouquet variety and from seeds that Rick kindly gifted to me. In the pic below it may not be that clear but the left hand plant does show branches growing in most directions but the centre and right hand plants only have arms in just one plane! The left one has 5 really bulbous branches and looks very different to the other two. Guess they don't look so leafless really but this is the best they've looked and are different to my obesums. The leaves often get damaged and grow deformed as if glued together when emerging. None have been pinched out at any time. Gill UK

I have some experience with this plant. You can try saving your dracaena by taking it out of the wet soil it's currently in, and letting the roots air out and dry out for about a day; then, repot it in new, well draining soil and give it very little water. I, too, think that every other day is much too often to water a dracaena. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings - I'm thinking it'd only need watering maybe every 10-14 days, or even less frequent, depending on the soil. Best of luck!

But, I used to grow things from seed without any problems and without a light right on top of them...i just don't know what to do.

Should I go buy a flourecent light, is there a special kind i should get? It's really overcast outside, so they're not going to get enough light that way...i mean they're bending over, but they just sprouted, so they may 1/4 of an inch long...should i lift the dome now? water more sparsley? i only planted them on monday!

Lift the dome and get them light. Any light. But the bluer the light and the more efficient it is, the better.

Yep...what they said...preferable sunlight (inside in a windowsil if it's too clod out).
