1 Red, 1 Pink, 1 Wildcard (Rose Newbie)

I'm going to get back into roses this spring on a very small scale.

I will be planting one red, one pink, and one or two others (I call these the wildcard).

What would you all suggest.

Welcome to the world of roses, jmc. You didn't say which red and pink roses you're planting. Have you ordered them yet?

A little more info. would help, jmcbackyarddigger. What size range? Do you want the hybrid tea bloom or the David Austin type bloom or what? Disease-resistant (especially if you don't spray)? Easy-care? If you've grown roses before, what kinds and what did you like/dislike about them? There are so many roses to pick from--it helps if we have some idea of your expectations.

If you are looking for hybrid teas, Double Delight is always a wonderful choice.

If you are looking for a fuller bush which blooms a lot, Cherry Parfait is a good choice.

If you are looking for easy-care, any one of the Knock Out roses would be good.

If you like a more old-fashioned look, Austin's Molineux or William Shakespeare 2000 would be good.

Hope that gets you started on a few possibilities.

Saltcedar & Bahia, WOW! I'm sure you hear this all the time but it bears repeating, "You're amazing!" I've been searching the web since I read your posts and, after viewing many photos, also think the first one is Adenium. Bahia, it's on our sunporch which stays around 62Â°F during the winter. When it warms up, I'll give it some much needed TLC. I believe that I read about using orchid fertilizer for these. Now that I know you both think the second plant is a Bromeliad, I know what to do. Can you believe it stayed outside most of the winter on a covered patio? I have a pot with 4 Bromeliads in it but their leaves don't have those little spikes. I will put it outside when it warms up and watch it grow. Bromes seem to love the humidity here. You can't imagine how excited I was that both of you think the third one is Kalanchoe. I just love those. Bahia, after some googling, I believe you nailed it with Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. It's been outside all winter on the front porch. Honestly, I can't believe it survived, much less, about to bloom. Now that I know what it is, I'll repot it once it blooms. Can't wait to see what color it will be. Q. re: Knock Out rose - my 1st rose

A grouping does look good. I'd plant them into the garden now so the roots can get established. Even the hardiest roses can die the first winter if the roots have not had an opportunity to grow into the surrounding soil. August is a really hot dry time to transplant a potted rose. Unless you water regularly and deep you could lose them especially if the soil falls from the roots when you transplant. Nature size and planting distance is determined by your growing zone. Pruning can be easy. After each flush of bloom, allow the flowers to fade some. Use a pair of hedge clippers and remove the dead blooms along with a inch or so of cane to shape the bush. In a few weeks new buds will form along with new growth. You'll have more flowers within a month. Yearly pruning should be done in spring. Remove winter killed canes and dieback along with any damaged ones. Cut back as far as you want to shape the bush and keep it in bounds. As much as many rosarians complain about Knock Out being the only roses available in many garden centers, their ease of growing and hardiness encourages many to grow roses again. The desire to grow roses soon entices them to try other varieties.

Thanks everyone. It's a good thing I got these photos early cause we got more heavy rain this aternoon. Began around noon and rained almost all the rest of the day, sometimes very heavy, so you can imagine what my poor blooms looked like after that! :) I'm not complaining however, cause all this rain is going to make for vibrant color in all those future blooms!! Thanks. Would you keep the Austrian roses or let them grow in Austria. Are they are cheap $rose? My wife says destroy them. But I don't want to. You are right about being hard to start. I've tried two years to get starts rooted and all have failed. I do see many plants coming up from roots, but there's no way to tell if they are the yellow or copper. I have seen both the copper & yellow on the same plant, but have seen some stems that have solid red flowers. Evidently red is not dominant color? Thanks for the help on these. What do you think--kill them or try take cuttings, or new plants that have come up and move them? And anyone know on the other rose, that acts more like a rose, except it seems to have adapted to solid shade and blooms almost continually--very fragrant. It's definitely not a hybrid-tea.

Alec's Red [fragrant, deep red], Belinda's Dream [pink, healthy, blooms lots], Julia Child [yellow, great bloomer], Ebb Tide [purple, beautiful color], Tahitian Sunset [beautiful peach]. Any of the Buck roses are good - healthy, bloom lots.

Red: not my specialty
Pink: Marchesa Boccella (aka, Jacques Cartier) or Our Lady of Guadaloupe. The first gets to 4' - 5' tall the second about 3' tall.
Wildcard:
Yellows: Julia Child (3' tall), Sunflare (4' - 5' tall)
White: Pope John Paul II (probably 4' - 5' tall)

Champlain, Quietness, Lyda Rose or Earth Song. These are all shrub roses, easy to grow and will give you a nice garden display. If I were planting just a few roses I'd go for garden roses, which will make bigger plants in your zone and tend to produce a lot more blooms. It's up to you-- if you want red roses to cut for the house-- HT's Mr. Lincoln or Veteran's Honor, FL Europeana or Lavaglut. For pink, Queen Elizabeth (tall)( or Mystic Beauty (short). If you want to impress the neighbors, get a 6-8 ft. trellis and grow Dortmund or Altissimo-- they'll be over to find out what you're growing!
