Need no-spray replacements for 3 roses

Abe Darby

Pat Austin

Tamora

I no longer spray for BS and these are just going downhill terribly. Can you recommend no-spray roses (other than knockout types) that i can replace these with?

Cottage Rose is the only Austin I have had that does not get black spot.

I just listed my favorites in the thread near this one, but I am not sure about how they will do in your zone.

I like these:
Home Run-no scent, small plant, red, single, very disease free so far
Lyda Rose - fragrant, white, single, some bs
Bella Donna - OGR, fragrant, loaded with small pink button eye blooms, once blooming
If you can tolerate roses whose leaves fall off but continue to live many years consider Sunsprite and Rose de Rescht.
Rugosas are loveley, fragrant, disease free and the best darn Japanese beetle attractants in Virginia.

Hi Naveed, it has been a long time indeed! I am sorry to hear that you had to leave your wonderful garden and roses behind, but am happy to hear you will be starting anew. I can't comment on most of the newer Austins released since about 2009. However, I have been slowly replacing most of my old garden roses with the newer varieties from Kordes and especially those with an ADR certification. While not all of them are completely bullet-proof, the vast majority are exceptional roses in terms of vigour and disease resistance. Unfortunately, many of them lack strong fragrance which I remember was an important criteria for you in some roses. This is really the only area that Austin is doing better than Kordes currently and that may soon be changing as Kordes is now focusing on scent and have launched a new series of scented roses in Europe with the old fashioned bloom form. To start, take a look at the Fairytale series and the Vigorosa series from Kordes and also his newer climber introductions. All the best and take care for now.

I've decided to forget the mauve rose and go with an all yellow bed. Too much headache. The bed is edged in lavender so that should provide enough contrast. SCHNEEKOPPE is definately on my list of must haves for my TWILIGHT'S BOWER garden. I really like the delicate lavender tinged white color and the loosely cupped flower form is better than with most Hybrid Rugosas. Besides, we actually get a winter here in zone 6 so it should be happier. I'll make sure to amend/replace the soil to improve drainage, and carefully place it so that it won't maul visitors. Patrick, sorry for chiming in here on 2 roses I haven't actually grown. But for my half-a-cent's worth, I am intrigued by Ebb Tide, like Tim, have seen it around, doing very well. I just don't know if the people growing it were spraying or not. But I'm planning on getting it this coming spring, too. For color and fragrance alone, it seems worth a try, since it has a reputation of being quite healthy and a reliable bloomer. As for rose #2, does Magenta count as purple? If so, consider Incense Indigo from Roses Unlimited. It's perhaps a little shorter than you described, but was bred for trouble-free growth in southern conditions (one of Viraraghaven's creations from India, using only tropical and Asian species in the breeding line. I would think that would genetically give it quite a defense against blackspot. As for cold-hardiness, if the Chinas and noisettes are surviving there, I would think II will too. Oh yeah, this one's supposed to be very very fragrant, too. I don't have it yet, mostly because I am reeeeally ambivalent about the color Magenta. Good luck with the search! Mike

Jeri, I heard Dr. Stephen George speak 2 or 3 years ago. I was part of a small group here in Tulsa, and he was asking about disease resistance in our gardens. His objective at that time was to create an Earthkind list throughout the country. He was looking for roses that may do well everywhere, and also various lists for various parts of the country. However, as part of a University, I think his funds may have been limited, and he may not have traveled as far as he originally intended. He spent a day with us, and I think he was traveling through different areas looking for earth kind answers. Unfortunately, until the earth kind philosophy allows us to water and fertilize, I don't think it will get too far. I know that my friends were annoyed with me, but I could not get past not watering in this part of the country. Even if Texas is hotter and dryer, in Tulsa, if you do not water, nobody will want to look at your roses, and they will be sickly. Once you can water, damage will have been done, and the rose will only thrive a fraction of what it could if it were watered. Also, I don't know about failure to fertilize. I don't see how nutrients will go into the ground after a couple of years if you do not put them there. After awhile all food will have gone through, and without adding soil, I think you will end up with sterile soil (meaning it has not food to nourish the roots.) People who live in other parts of the country are likely to have periodic rains and not have this issue. Sammy

Home Run has been very healthy for me. Rose de Rescht does drop all of it's leaves for me too. I gave away Sunsprite because if you blinked the blooms were blown and looked like used tissue. Julia Child is fairly healthy and blooms a lot.

Remember Me. Beautiful easy orange blend that stays perfect clean all summer. Bred in N. Scotland for their harsh conditions. Rugosa's should do well in your area. If they draw J. beatles, those pest's are only around for a few weeks. Just make sure you get good repeat bloomers.

1) Buck roses such as Earthsong and Quietness.
2) Kordes Fairy Tale roses
3) Easy Elegance roses.
4) Austin claims that The Mayflower is disease resistant.

I grow a number of Austins in my no-spray garden.

They get blackspot, but grow and bloom well.

The Shepherdess is vigorous and beautiful, very good repeat bloom on a lovely shrub.

Evelyn repeats very well.

Sweet Juliet is similar to Evelyn, also a lovely rose.

Bishop's Castle holds onto its leaves better than some of the others.

Predfern - I love the Buck I have, Prairie Harvest. And i've seen pics of Quietnesi s and it is beautiful. I may have to get that one. I'm not familiar with Earthsong but will take a look for that one too.

HI Krista - thank you for this listing. I LOVE Austins, but I've grown so many of them (Evelyn included) and they all get blackspot so badly in my climate. I get a gorgeous spring flush and then it starts the decline... By the time i should have a fall flush they had lost at least 1/2 leaves and the rest were covered in black spots.

Trospero - off to look up the 3 you listed. Thank you so much.

You guys/gals on this rose forum are always so helpful.

Julia Child, Quietness, Earthsong, and Prairie harvest are good for me. Prairie Breeze is good as well as Square Dancer, Simon Estes, and Country Dancer. Everyone loves Carefree Beauty, but for me the form seems rather loose and floppy. Perhaps I have them in the wrong location.

I agree with the "Fairy Tale" series from Kordes (order from Palatine). The two that I have had almost no blackspot last year, but did not defoliate. I have Caramel Fairy Tale and Floral Fairy Tale. Pat Shanley showed a lovely photo of her Lion's Fairy Tale at a talk to our rose society last year, I think she lives on Long Island (or close), she said it was disease free.

If you are looking for Austins, I don't spray Mayflower or Queen of Sweden. The first couple years of Jubilee Celebration, it was a wimpy plant and had some BS issues, but now in its 4th years, it has really shaped up and never had more than an occasional and very minor bout of BS--mostly disease-free. Gorgeous coloring. I've also order Lady of Shalott for this coming spring--it is supposed to be just about impervious to BS, and its colors pick up some of the yellow-golden-orangy shades that Tamora and Pat Austin feature. I'm really looking forward to the Lady of Shalott.

If you want a rugosa that doesn't get too big, try Fru Dagmar Hastrup. Mine is still small but had the most charming single pink flowers and no disease problems at all.

Lately I've been recommending Our Lady of Guadalupe also--light pink/darker pink reverses floribunda--abundant bloomer and just minor bouts of BS occasionally. Geez, that plant sure does bloom and bloom and bloom!

Oh, how could I forget my favorite new plant--Mystic Beauty (from Roses Unlimited). Exquisitely beautiful and so far no disease issues at all. It is a Bourbon.
