Phal. Oddities

Or maybe some phals are just different.

This first one is actually a Doritis {{gwi:140749}} It has three basal keikis, three spikes, one currently blooming, one growing and the third spike is on the largest keiki. This is in a 6" pot, purchased in midsummer, repotted a couple of months ago in CHC mix, all keikis were on the plant when purchased and it had the blooming spike. I bought it for the keikis.

This is Phal. aphrodite subsp. Formosana 'Miki' {{gwi:162940}} This has two spikes, one blooming, a new root growing and a new leaf emerging. This is the same plant but a picture of the spike. {{gwi:162941}} There are five blooms, then the spike elongated and branched and the buds are swelling for additional bloom. Strange! This started life here in sphag/tree fern and repotted into CHC mix, 4" pot.

This is Phal. Penang Girl 'Ching Ruey', purchased sometime this summer from Chesterfield and they called it their #2 quality. It was. {{gwi:207179}} Note the long thin strappy leaves but the real oddity is in the crown area. This plant never had crown rot but it never grew another leaf. Eventually, out of the middle of the crown, a root appeared and buried itself in the pot. Another case of strange. This is Penang Girl today {{gwi:140758}} It grew a basal keiki and now has a large spike with a tiny new spike emerging. Notice the change in the shape of the leaves. 4" pot, CHC mix.

This is Phal. aphrodite 'Spring Bamboo'. {{gwi:162942}} It bloomed late summer/early fall and stalled but then started again by branching and the buds are now swelling for another round of blooms and another spike emerging. 4" pot, CHC mix.

This is Phal. floresensis {{gwi:140751}} This shows an old spike with buds unbloomed, a second elongating spike and a third tiny spike emerging plus a new leaf growing.

I hope you enjoyed a look at some phals that march to the beat of their own drum.

Brooke
