Depends entirely on how badly I want it. Many have been given one chance to prove themselves before they went elsewhere. A few have been given multiple times. Grey Pearl holds the record. I've had seven or eight over the course of the past 29 years. I currently have two budded ones. Once they go, it's a toss up whether I'll maintain it as a budded plant or allow it to go into rose memory. Kim

The number of chances depends on a) how much I wanted that particular rose or whether it was an impulse b) how much I liked it if I ever saw a bloom, and c) whose fault it was that it died.

Roses that I've gotten established, say 2 or three years, but who then don't make it through a particular winter or storm, they don't get replaced. I'm a Darwinian gardener.

Were the second two also in band pots? Did you leave them there, or transplant them into a larger pot? When I get bands I immediately put them into one gallon pots - I don't think the band pots have enough soil (or insulation from hot/cold) for them to survive in them very long.

If all three of these deaths were when the roses were still in band pots, I would definitely give them another chance - in a larger pot.

Same here. I always pot my bands up to one gallon. Although I may have lost one or two to cold here, it's usually the heat a rose in a pot can't take down here. If a rose dies while still potted, I will always give it another chance. I figure it was probably my cultural practices that did it in. Once in the ground if it dies, maybe I will give it another chance if I really want that rose.

I too have very little luck with bands that I don't pot up so were a rose to appear to be sickly in a band I'd give it another try potted up. Other than that I don't waste time babying things as I just don't have the patience.

Aimee Vibert has been a bear to get going, so IMHO it's nothing you've done. Jerome has had a lot of trouble growing AV as well.

Mine has taken 3 years now to get to about 2'x2', in really prime, first-rate soil and mild climate. Yes the flowers are beautiful and sweetly fragrant, but..

With something like 12,000 commercially available cultivars out there, sometimes it's worth trying again, sometimes not.

If a rose does not do well, and you did not obtain it from a seller of virus certified free roses, I suggest that your replacement be from such a supplier (this advice probably will not apply in hot areas such as the first posters zone 9).

If you did not know the rootstock of the failed rose, I recommend that you find out which rootstock is recommended for your area and buy the replacement rose on that rootstock.

Replace the soil in the area where the rose will be planted.

I've really wanted this rose for quite some time, so I'm giving it another try.

The second two were also in bands. I usually leave bands alone for a couple weeks (or more) after they arrive. I've always thought it gives them time to recover and acclimate. I've never lost a rose this way before now. But I did think, too, that maybe I should pot up right away since I don't know what else I could do. At least now the weather will be more consistent and I won't have to keep moving them in and out.

I don't think I'll mind if AV is a slow grower. I just hope I can get at least one past the band stage!

I seem to have better luck by getting the band either into the ground or potted up right away. Hopefully that's all it is for you too.

I've resurrected several band sized roses which appeared to be heading towards Rose Heaven, by treating them as if they had never left the greenhouse and misting machine.
by putting the plant in
- moist soil that fills the bottom third of a one gallon or two gallon zip-loc bag, depending on the size of the plant.
-spraying the canes with Cornell spray.
- then blowing the bag up like a balloon to inflate the sides away from the stems.
I have had success with this method whenever there has been more than 2 square inches of living root tissue on an own-root plant. Even when the canes have died down, or in once case, been eaten to the ground by a dog using a young plant as a chew toy, this can work.
I leave the plant in the bag and spray it 1-3 times a week until it has grown two sets of leaves and the root system is 4 or more inches long with 7-15 roots.

Ok. Ordered two more and they arrived yesterday. These are really small babies.

Like I said, I usually leave bands alone for a month, especially puny ones like this. But I decided to follow the advice here and I potted up the one that looked a bit larger and healthier. But even on this one the root system was so small and fragile looking that I just left the smaller one in it's band. I didn't have the heart to yank it out.

Maybe I'll feel braver tomorrow.

My personal nemesis is Archduke Charles. I bought one and dropped it. Of course it died.

I've been trying to root it for over a year. First time I didn't get roots. Second time it rooted but it didn't survive the transplant into a gallon pot. 3rd time (just a few months ago) it survived the transplant and looked great. I had two going and did a little happy dance that time time I won. Then that week of 75 degree weather hit and I forgot to go water the pot every day. They both dried out then both died.

I'm too embarrassed to ask for more cuttings! I'm going to buy it and be done.

I will succeed someday at cuttings - I'm trying to learn from my mistakes!

You know, I'd forgotten I've killed Gruss un Achen twice. The first I rooted a cutting given to me and one of my horses pulled her up by the roots. They find roses extremely tasty, and she hadn't been in the ground long. She laid there for almost two days before I found her, and it was too late.

I ordered it last year, and it died in the pot over the winter. I'm not sure if it was the frigid winter we had this year or something else I did.

I would still like to have this rose, so I will probably order it again or see if I can get another cutting to root.

If it is my fault it died or cause of death is unknown, I try again. If it is a hardiness issue, I let it go. And it depends on the class. I give up on Bourbons and Hybrid Teas easily and Hybrid Perpetuals are now on a one-shot contract as well. I just looked at my dead list and there are an awful lot of HPs on it.

Also, I now plant most bands only between May and August.

Well, as some posters may remember, I have been complaining about my zephirine Drouin for about 3 years now (SF BAY AREA). I had visions of her growing quickly up my front entry arbor to welcome guests with no thorns, great fragrance, and lots of bright pretty pink flowers. I waited, and waited. Any (slow) growth she put on was ruined by powdery mildew. She had the best of soil, the best sunny exposure, perfect conditions. After 3 years I grabbed her by the scruff of the neck and yanked her out & threw her out by the old chicken coop, which blocks 90% of the sun. So there she sits with very little sun,and no love. Well, you guessed it? She has taken off, putting on about 2 feet of growth that is completely free of powdery mildew. She looks healthy lush, and the biggest she has been so far. The only thing I can think of is that she didn't like the late afternoon ocean breeze we get here. Maybe too cool & moist for her, especially just a few hours before dark.
So, if you really like a rose and it is not doing well, try another location, even if logic dictates that you have it in the best place for it.

I will try a rose twice if I am intent on having it. After that, I figure it just ain't going to cut it in my climate and go on to the next best thing.

In the past, I have lost many bands to potting up to a larger pot too quickly. The tiny fragile root system gets water-logged and rots in all that cool, wet potting soil.

I look at the root development at the bottom of the band as my guide to when to transplant, will be fibrous and have some substance about it.

Stepping up pot sizes gradually rather than plucking them into an enormous container or the ground makes it easier to maintain a damp-not-wet growing medium while the small plant establishes.

My young Aimee Vibert was rec'd 2 weeks ago, a nice-sized band from VG. But will not be ready for transplant into a 1 gallon for a while yet. I have been schlepping it in and out of my unheated barn. It looks good with some growth thus far.

I don't think I'll be replacing Gloire de Dijon if it ever dies. It hasn't grown at all in the over a year I've had it.

on the fence about William Shakespeare 2000. I bought two from David Austin last year (so over a year in the ground) and they didn't grow all year and now I think one of them has just totally died. While all the other roses (mostly) all in the same condition/positions seem to be doing pretty great.

PS: I have a nice sized Aimee Vibert from RG, potted it up, seems to be happy enough for now. I bought it for "various reasons" so I'm not too impatient for it to get big.

My ZD took three years before it bloomed. The same for Marechel Niel. Some roses are really stubborn. I had a Peggy Martin crushed by an Oak Tree and ripped out by a bulldozer come back to life in six months. So, it depends on the rose.
