Plants verses people?
Comments (11)Hi Mike, Thank you, I am a nice person with a good heart. That is why I though it was posible that I had not gotten your meaning. I had read the last three lines of the your thread entry. Even with those last three lines I still misunderstood your point. So after rereading your post I will try to sum up what I gather what you're trying to say in my own words. Plants give us unconditional pleasure without receiving much in return. People on the other hand can be high maintenance. The amount of maintenance depends on the person. Some people are extremely nice and caring and some others are downright nasty. Plants on the other hand do not have nasty traits, unless you want to put opuntia in that space. lol I know of no plant that has ever embarrassed me for instance or called me a bad name. Our plant room can definitely be a haven for us when we get tired of the hustle and bustle of the world, that including having to deal with other people's problems. I'm glad to hear that you are not the woman with 10 cats who cannot relate to the world. That would be a horrible existence. I would feel sorry for any one in the space. I'm sorry that you felt like you lost something here with the latest acrimony. I'm not sure how long you've been here. Your member page says October 7, 2007, but you may have been here longer than that. Even so, I've been here a long time and can tell you that the people who are nasty come and go and the people who are really plant people and are interested in promoting the hobby, are the ones who stay. This place is no different than any other microcosm. One has to take the bad with the good. Even with that, sometimes when someone is not acting nice it is not unreasonable to call that person on it. Bad behavior has to be stopped or the forum will die. I've seen other forms go by the wayside because just a few bad people bully others away. Good growing to you and take care. Larry PS - I'm glad you like the "caress" reference. lol...See MorePirateGirl and other New York City plant people......
Comments (3)Well HallGall, I'll share all I can think of, perhaps others will come along & add to it. Of course, it's hard to know/guess what's available to you locally in order to suggest other than that, but here goes. W. 28th St., btwn 6th & 7th Avenues is what remains of what used to be our Flower District; you might look around there, they do wholesale & retail. The name is deceptive, there's houseplants, succulents, tropicals, large size floor plants & trees, all kinds of stuff (other than 'flowers'). In particular on W. 28th (just past the McDonalds as I recall, on that same side of the street) is a crowded but interesting plant shop who often displays lots of his plants at curbside. He's of special interest to me as he often has a large array of succulnts (don't know if you're into them). Try going down to 14th St/Union Square Green Market; Friday's a good day for plant vendors, look for Fantastic Gardens (you may have to ask, their name on their truck's not always visible). They have an interesting & varied plant selection, both on tables, but also be sure to look below. This all depends on what the weather's going to be at end Oct. since I write this 3 wks before you arrive. It finally got cold here in NYC today, 1st day it felt like Fall (I was at the beach in the ocean last Mon at 6:00 pm) temps dropped into the 60s today. If you want, I even have a favorite shop in Brooklyn, if you'd be open to try the subway. LMK & feel free to EM me privately, just put something planty in the subject line so I don't mistake it for junk). The GW EM facility seems to be working, otherwise, pls. post back here. Anybody else (Xero, Gabro14?), who else is around from NYC??? (PG) Karen...See MoreSome people drink... I buy plants.
Comments (38)Well, Toni, it's actually my father who has terminal oral cancer (diagnosed almost two months ago) and is talking about cancer treatment (oral and lymph node surgery, facial reconstruction, radiation, etc.). I don't feel it's appropriate to talk too much about for possible legal reasons, but like I've said...cancer is a horrid situation regardless of who in the family it is and what type of person he/she is, and it's a unique situation here, where the person diagnosed is rather hateful, and fairly broke. My dad's an ornery old coot, and always has been, and is of the opinion that a wife has no claim to anything financial if the husband has provided the income. His personality is impossible to describe. It's like, if you'd been with someone for thirty years, who has verbally abused you, quietly racked up credit card bills, never let you see a bill in that time and refused to give you any account information, and isn't quite all there mentally due to several strokes...and then after he's cut all insurance coverage, suddenly he has cancer and, with treatment, might live an extra year or two, you'd be caring for him, and you'd likely about go bankrupt in the process. It's very hard and very scary for my mom. Normally such things would be a family decision and with some consideration for the spouse, and with some more logic about the expense and the chances of survival. He's a mean old brute--an absolutely terrified one, yes, but still how he is. He's dying and not taking it well. You mentioned mood changes with cancer treatment...God, can't even imagine with him!! haha. I know families go through the expense and hardships of cancer treatment all the time. It's just, sigh, a weird household. I've certainly learned, know who you're marrying before you marry. And if this all progresses, we'll seek help. You're makin' me want to run out and buy some plants. ;) Such good news about your job, CG! I'm so happy to hear....See MoreWANTED: Enough people for a Montreal area plant swap?
Comments (32)Unfortunately Sarah has had to drop out due to some unavoidable problems - she really wanted to come but it just isn't likely to be able to happen :-( I can still get to the mountain by taking the bus up, but I can't take as much up with me that way. Here's a thought if it's going to be just the three of us (Lakshmi, Chi and myself) - I could host a short little tea/lunch/snack thing and we could meet at my place (and my embarrassingly small garden!). I know Chi knows how to find me, and I assume it's as easy for him to get to my place as to the mountain. Lakshmi - If you only have time to zip in and out, it might still be easier for you to come by my place - there is a back alley with very little traffic and you can stop and load up on Chi's/my plants and drop off yours. That way you can have some of everything of mine that you want - I won't be limited by what I can carry (I even have some Monarda I can divide for you and I have some extra chives). So if this is good with you, I'll send you my address and directions on how to get here. If it isn't good, we'll go back to Plan A (the mountain). Those rose cuttings would be great and if 'Overdam' is your grass name, then it's not what I have and I'd like to try it. Your Shasta Daisies and Dahlias are interesting too. And if you're still offering that peony, I'll go out tomorrow and see what I have that's interesting and run it by you to see if you want it and think it's worth it. Chi - everything you wanted you can have - the Clematis, Belamcanda, and Iris pseudacorus. Was there anything else? I would like some of your Honeysuckle and Clematis cuttings.
