Pruning of Immature Tea Roses

Greg

Hello, everyone! I have two Monsieur Tilliers growing in very large containers. They are about 3 years old. Only this fall did they begin to produce full size blooms -- after I installed a drip irrigation system, and, I guess, they finally began to receive the right amount of moisture!

Last February, I pruned them for the first time, and, gathering from what I have read on past posts in this forum, I cut back too much and got lots of weak, vertical growth and tiny blooms.

Late February is our pruning time in San Antonio, so thought I'd turn to the experts here far enough in advance to see what you would recommend. Both of the Monsieur T's are pretty full now, still only about 3-4' tall, kind of floppy, and pretty tangled looking in the center.

Should I do anything with them in regard to pruning, or just leave them alone? Try to clear out the centers of the bushes? Remove weaker canes all the way to the base?

Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated!
