Combined Rose List: where to find roses

For many searches, HelpMeFind is what we need. But there are other searches that need a bit more scope.

The Combined Rose List is published annually in the spring and lists a huge number of rose sellers, internationally, with their websites, email contacts and whether or not they export and to which countries.

Most roses are listed under multiple names (in the opinion of the authors).

If I want to know which nurseries plan to offer a rose in 2010, I'll look up a specific rose in the CRL that will come out in late February.

For historical searches (for the past decade) many Botanical Gardens have the older CRL's in their libraries, so I can see if particular roses have been offered in the past decade or two...which at least gives hope that someone bought them and they are still out there, in a garden with a label.

I belonged to a local rose society for years and never heard about the CRL until a local mini grower showed me her copy. She had some minis that were no longer listed and kept meaning to send her list in; sadly, she started having memory problems and her roses are understandably not a priority for her family.

Anyway, it's a resource that you need to know exists.

I've had the CRL since 1997 and have contributed occasionally by supplying a nursery list or a correction. I am sorry to say that I find the CRL less necessary with the growth of the internet and my latest copy is from 2008. So many nurseries put up their list of roses on the net nowadays that now I look first to the sites of the best and biggest European rose nurseries, with or without a link from HMF. Two big Danish firms, both specialising in old roses, have withdrawn their listings from the CRL because they couldn't handle all the international enquiries. One of them is on the internet, the other is not but still sends roses on a smaller scale.

2004 'Found' Rose List

Having received e-mail about this post, will address several of the comments. 1) “Underlining of “found” roses, having an official AEN was not indicated, and could cause some confusion”. (I now realize that in “Word”, the underling of information does not appear when posted on the GW) 2) “Additional data on any “found” roses having an AEN would be helpful”. 3) “The fact, that “found” roses can be exhibited in a show that has a special class for “found” roses”. While they cannot receive ARS awards, are shown strictly for their educational value. (This being one of the main purposes of posting this list. That if a show schedule did have a special class for them, the exhibitor would at least have an idea of what roses are considered “found” roses). With this posting it will move down the line, replaced in the near future with one with more complete detailed information. Any comments or suggestions please use this post. Thanks

Helen, Great! You take the best pics. I do grow Neil Diamond , it is one of my absolute favorites, and I agree has every great quality. But I thought Broceliande was different enough that I’d like to try it too. Judging from HMF Broceliande starts out yellow and reddish-pink (whereas Neil is white and reddish-pink), then Broceliande seems to fade to rose-pink/white as it matures, whereas Neil is very color stable. Broceliande also appears to have very glossy foliage. Both roses have very nice spiral form and big heavy blooms, which is rather an exception among stripes. It’d be hard for any rose to match Neil in fragrance, but Broceliande is also listed as strongly fragrant, and perhaps has a different scent. I was going to order it from Palatine, but they took it off the website the day before they went live .

Finally I can put my little Grey Pearl to rest without believing I am to blame. I'm stll sad though. Blue for You can be decidedly gray at times and is moderately healthy and hardy here. Gets BS without fungicide but survises without it. PIcture below shows more of the warm tone, cool temps bring out the blue.

The Combined Rose List was an essential resource for the rose adventurer before HMF existed. I have bought this publication every year or every other year for decades. I still have all the old copies and it helps to learn what roses come and go in commerce and who has had them in their collection. So even with HMF, this is a serious and indispensable publication for those who really are interested in roses.

Ann,
Could you post this post about every six months, just to remind us all the CRL exists. It's the sort of thing one doesn't need often, but when one does, people like me go thru the "I'm certain there is such a list, someone once posted something about it," routine. Thank you!

Or perhaps there is someplace on HMF where you could note it.
