A visit to the apple orchard and gramma's garden too

DD and Kenzie came for dinner today. Kenzie had a ball exploring Gramma's garden. I just know she's a gardener in the making ;o) This kid is extremely hard to photograph as she doesn't sit still for a second.

My birthday gift from one of my sisters. Its actually like a pinwheel with the green leaves spinning.

She walked into this bed and plopped herself down and started exploring.

Michelle, she has grown up so much since we've last seen her. What a beautiful little girl she is! She does look very entranced and interested in the plants.

I am growing many old/obscure apples, and am quite happy with some of them. A few that I give high marks to in my climate are Kidds Orange Red, Egremont Russet, Ribston Pippin, Canada Reinette, Reine des Reinettes, Hewes Crab, Wickson, Hawaii, Mother, Roxbury Russet, White Winter Pearmain, Hawaii. I also find Gala and Fuji to be wonderful here. The old apples do on average have more "problems" than the modern varieties in terms of productivity, blemishing, tree shape, etc, but most of them only have minor problems of this form, and reward you with unique flavors. Mother for example has a very small harvest window, a huge problem for a commercial grower, but often not a problem for a backyard grower who knows what a ripe one looks like and can pick when dead ripe and enjoy a little slice of heaven. Some do seem like duds as well, at least in my climate: Sturmer Pippin splits at the tops, the bugs love them extra good, and its taste isn't worth the demerits. Scott

@RichinRichmond: I had heard that scab or possibly another disease could be transmitted through cane fruits. @fabaceae_native: This is just my apple orchard. I have other fruit trees planted in different places. I'm just looking for small plants like bushes to fill in some of the space between trees. Wild plums are a nightmare around here. They take over and make a huge thicket if you don't mow around them every few weeks. I plan on mowing the orchard only when the clovers/alfalfa are tall enough to harvest for hay. @Northwoodswis4: Thanks for the headsup about the lingonberry/blueberry compatibility issue. I have another spot I can put the lingonberries that sounds perfect as far as shade and soil moisture go. I'm trying to diversify my orchard to make disease/pest management a little less trouble. I've read a lot of work on how to lower disease and pest pressure by interplanting. It makes the pests put more energy into finding the next host plant instead of just hopping from plant to plant. A friend of mine brought up another fruit variety that I had forgot about. Bush cherries. I have a couple Carmine Jewel cherry bushes and some Nanking cherry bushes that would also work. I'm going to try as many different varieties as possible to keep the orchard producing as long and as much as possible every year.

silentlou...i'll get out there today and take some pics for you, and post them tonight. The trees on the east side are farther away (maybe 20 feet), but the trees on my south side are probaly 12 feet from where my plantings of all kinds start.I have deer and bear, coons,possums, skunk, fox...you name it, i've got them running through my orchard..it's a freeway! I get the majority of my damage from moles, though..haven't seen too much damage from other animals. I know what you mean about the hickory nuts dropping...mowing in the fall sounds like ping pong balls under your deck! My ground is littered with little holes where the squirrels bury them... My hickories didn't give me anything to speak of this year..they have one huge bearing year,(last year for me), then they rest for a year or two..so this was going to be light year for them anyway, then along came the hail storms and knocked a ton of them down early. I love my woodpeckers..I have the smaller (6" or so) kind in my hickories, and I have a big (14") woodpecker that comes to a dead tree I have on another fenceline..he's been going to that tree for 2 years, so I leave it there for him..it drives my neighbor nuts, he wants the tree for firewood, but I won't give it to him!! Are you Upstate N.Y.? I am between Albany and Syracuse. One other question..how old are your Hickories? I was told by an old timer that years ago, the government(don't know if fed. or state) had a program either during the depression or just after to give people fruit and timber trees if they would plant them, to help people have a future source of food and/or timber. Most of my neighbors have huge stands of pine trees..I guess the people that lives here wanted nuts! Donna

I agree, Michelle, she is a gardener. Noticed that she didn't step on anything and her hands looked like she was thinking "gentle!!!!".

She is gorgeous!

Oh Michelle, For a subject who is difficult to photograph you've done an outstanding job. All these pics are just marvelous! She is too cute for words. And yes, she definitely looks to be a gardener in the making. Love the apple orchard and pumpkin patch pics. What fun, what fun!

Oh Michelle, what a sweet little girl you have there. She's just beautiful. I love her big blue eyes. Aren't they so much fun at this age? They're just so excited about learning and exploring life. So great that you were able to spend the day enjoying her. Thanks for posting these pictures. They grow and change so quickly.

Deanne, you don't know how many pictures it took to get some good ones. Unlike plants, just just isn't still.

Chelone, good to hear from you. Yes it does seem like she was just a baby. I started to Idyll when DD was pregnant with her, so I have been here a little over 2 years.

DD was quite funny, she doesn't want Kenzie to pick any of the flowers, but Gramma says go ahead, I have lots. I don't want her to think the garden is off limits.

Do you all have access to Honey Crisp apples? The picture where she is eating the apple and has juice on her shirt tells just how sweet and juicy that type of apple is.

I so enjoyed these pictures. I took a similar series when our two were that age at an apple farm and have always loved looking back at them. McKenzie is soooooo adorable! Honey Crisp are a favorite in our household and ones I always look for at the market.

It is difficult for me to get 'normal' pictures of my GDs . The middle one is extra bad at 'posing' in some rediculous shape! :-( I have to catch them when they don't know I'm taking a pic.
Your pics are so unaffected. I understand how hard it must have been to get so many great ones.They are to be treasured forever. Our little ones grow up so fast. I wish I had had a digital camera when they were smaller. The oldest will be a teenager next month.

Oh Michelle!! Kenzie is adorable in every shot. I especially like the one of her fingers in the birdhouse-those eyes are so bright and blue!(she's got her gramma's beautiful eyes: )Thanks for sharing Kenzie's garden fun with us. I think it would be cute to see Kenzie and Bella having a tea party together...

Lovely pictures of an adorable little girl, Michelle! So many keepers I bet you're having a hard time deciding which ones to frame...or are you going to frame them all? :-) Honestly, I thought..."I think I'd frame the 1st one...love the way you captured the wind in her hair", and then I think "I love that smile in the one of her picking the apple" and then,"eating the apple" and then the one where she is framed in the apple tree....LOL! Well, maybe you can do just a wall of sweet Kenzie! :-) All of the pics are winners. Looks like she had a ball too. You are building wonderful memories for her...lucky girl and lucky grandma too! :-)
