Joan Rivers rose

Ralph Moore created a modern rose from Playboy X Condessa de Sastago and introduced it as Joan Rivers. No one lists it on HMF, nor does Texas A&M appear to have it. Might anyone here on the forums grow it and be able and willing to share cuttings, please? Thanks. Kim

Wouldn't it have to be one with a rather objectionable scent and nothing but thorns? ;-)

Probably, plus a garish color which ages very badly. I think "tasteless" might well be the usual term to describe it. To be accurately named, it would also need to be a completely persistent plant, refusing to go away, probably much like a shoot of Dr. Huey.

Actually, though, the rose has a large flower, relatively decent foliage, with an intensely saturated red color. I only saw it at Sequoia under plastic and the plants were tall, loaded with flower.

Mr. Moore had said his agent was on a morning news/talk show when Ms. Rivers' agent was also a guest. They spoke and the connection was made. He named the rose as a business arrangement, not really being all that familiar with the celebrity. Kim

I've never seen stem girdler damage -- yet. I have a large black raspberry bed next to several of my rugosas. Sooner or later my rugosas will probably get hit too. Your posts have me thinking someday when I find the proper space for it I'll have to get Polareis...

I've grown both flowers and the colors are very similar. In my climate, however, Joan Derifield is a much superior performer. JD is a prolific bloomer and its flowers are bigger than those of SR. JD has much sturdier scapes and great branching. As with many Munsons here, I didn't get many blooms from SR. I'm not sure I even grow it anymore. Chris

There really isn't much left on this side of the border. The Americans are all either major producers that don't sell much besides the latest and greatest, and boutique nurseries that have zero to none experience with life below zero. They sell rooted cuttings that will do fine if they are hardy varieties, but those are often few and far between, and their usual offerings are often very difficult to get up to size in this climate. You also can't necessarily trust their advice on what's hardy or what's best for their roses. So the standard source for roses is Pickering in Ontario. They ship from Buffalo, so there aren't any border issues. Palatine is a relatively new Ontario nursery that I've heard good things about. They do mostly modern roses, and I don't know if they charge for a phytosanitary certificate. Pickering doesn't. It's usually $25, which isn't bad for a large order, but a killer cost on a small one. Hortico is the other big Ontario nursery. I've never ordered from them, and they have a very uneven reputation. There are people who have been happy with them, and people who can't stand them. They used to primarily be a wholesale operation, and part of their problem was having absolutely no clue how to deal with customers. A lot of it depends specifically what you are looking for. Pickering is an acceptable replacement. Just don't make the mistake of thinking they are growing roses on the frozen tundra just because they are in Canada. They are on the lake shore, and warmer than most of us.

I am looking for cuttings of the 'Joan Rivers' rose hybridized by Ralph Moore; it was sold to Springhill Nurseries sometime in the late 1990's. Apparently, it was never registered, since it is not listed in the MR12 database. Carolyn Supinger, Burling Leong and Paul Barden have no knowledge of its possible whereabouts. If you have any information or possess a plant of it, I would be grateful for information and/or cuttings. I regret that I did not take them when the opportunity was present, but life is chock full of useless regrets. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. JimofShermanOaks

I seem to remember seeing a rose called JOAN RIVERS quite a long time ago in one of the Spring Hill rose catalogs. I believe it was a deep red one? I could be mistaken about that. But I seem to remember thinking I wouldn't order it because it was just another red (not my favorite color class). I'll have to go hunt thru all my old catalogs and see if I am correct about that. Not that it's going to help you much...

Lol, I love your descriptions of what it "should" look like! It would definitely have to be surgically grafted many times and in many places!

I stifled myself yesterday, but I just can't help myself today.

The bloom has probably changed every decade so will be unrecognizeable when compared to its original self.

I heard it was 85% plastic.

It was recently overheard mocking other roses' foliage.

Someone reported seeing it throw out a thorny cane at Chelsea Handler.

And it has thrown off a sport. Looks nothing like the mother plant. Equally noxious, however. Does not play well with others in the garden.

Its bed needs to be dressed at least 5 times a day, but still won't be satisfied.
