Dieback Issues with Red Intuition

I have a Red Intuition and am wondering if anyone has a problem with canes dying back all the time.

Mine is a fairly new plant, been in the ground about a year, gets some blackspot, but still seems fairly disease resistant. It blooms a lot, and continues to grow. In fact, it is blooming now. The problem is canes seem to die back all the time. If I prune the spent blooms off (yes, the way I am supposed to), eventually the rest of that cane turns yellow or blackish brown, and dies.

I don't seem to have this issue with my Tiffany or Mr. Lincoln (or any of my other roses for that matter). Is this a characteristic of this bush? Perhaps it is not the healthiest addition to a Florida garden.

I have to add that I seldom spray, but that doesn't seem to bother anything else. In fact, I'm turning to less toxic disease control methods.

Hi There,

We represent Delbard's Garden Roses in the U.S.

Keep in mind that Red Intuition is a florist rose and was not released as a Garden Rose by Delbard for some of the reasons you mention. Delbard like many European Breeders has a line of Garden Roses and a line of Florist Roses and the two rarely cross over.

At the request of some customers in the U.S. they have permitted us to release RI as an "Exhibition" variety and we have done so through two nurseries in the U.S. By Exhibition Variety we mean a rose that is not a Garden Rose and will need extra care.

However, it seems it does do well in some parts of the country - CA being one of them.

But, if you are having trouble with it don't be too surprised as it was never intended to be grown outdoors.

Yes, I did have the same experience with Red Intuition last year. I assumed and hoped that it was the consequence of the Easter freeze and this year this rose will behave differently.
Now, I wonder...

I have two plants and they're on different rootstocks. One is multifora, and I can't remember what the other one is. Whatever Carlton's used. But I haven't seen any dieback on either one. The multiflora one definitely is a better, more vigorous plant tho.

Some add'l info: What I've noticed here in SE MI is that we often get temps below freezing (not just frost) while NS leaves are still green, which prevents them from developing any appreciable fall color. But those years when the fall temps decline more gradually NS can develop good orangish fall color. The other thing I've noticed in larger NS's is that they will grow as wide as tall (even though they're advertised to be taller than wide). Not sure if there's a perfect fit if you're looking for a maple that tolerates drought & alkalinity and doesn't grow too wide, but the first thing that comes to mind is State Street maple (Acer miyabei) - this tree has grown well on the higher pH clays around here, and so far has maintained an "upright" form (taller than wide). State Street will grow relatively large (bigger than it's often advertised to grow) and probably after many years it will widen out. Fall color is straight yellow, no orange or red. If you want a more compact, upright maple with good fall color, and your soil isn't too alkaline or too dry or you might consider Apollo sugar maple. Then there's Redpointe maple which, even though it's usually called an Acer rubrum, appears to be more tolerant of difficult soil conditions than straight rubrum. It's probably more accurate to call it a freemanii. It has good consistent red fall color, and stays taller than wide.

Oh thank you so much for posting that other brick kitchen :) I knew there was one out there since I'd researched it so long ago! You know...a little wine fridge in that microwave/coffee bar actually would be easy to do. I can do one upstairs (kitchen) and one downstairs in the man lounge :) Cheri :) Come on up! The weather's fine! ::looking outside at the six new inches of snow:: lovely actually...gorgeous LOL The micro location as in the last drawing is actually where it is now (in a built in oven and micro combo) and really it's handy there. We're not micro cookers, but if we were there would be a bit of open space there to land a dish, or right behind on the island. I think I'm going to go with it there and raise the cabinets up on the other side for more counter space. Venice thanks for the perspective in using a 7' isle kitchen. DH is the big cook in our kitchen, and he just isn't a fan of an isle that big. If this kitchen didn't have the opposing doors, we'd just work in a real island or do a U shaped kitchen, but given the circumstances, it works better with an island on wheels. And it can be rolled outside as well as inside which would be handy during parties. Heck I might get one for the deck :) We'll have a big smoker/bbq out there anyhoo. Lyfia LOL I have so many stoves and fridges I got confused :oP You mean the "current" stove not the future one heh heh Well still that poses a problem because the brick in the fridge location is made specifically to squeeze right around the fridge. The brick does not go all the way back on the wall as shown here, instead it's just on the outter edge so if I don't put a fridge where the fridge is, I would have to rebuild that side of the brick wall so you'd have a nice wall in there...verses cinderblock which is what you see after about five inches of brick. And I'd have to move the water location, which would be a bear with the brick enclosure I'm told. I had thought of a second sink where I currently have the microwave...but that high cost to move the water over there was prohibitive to that idea. My budget for this remodel is $150,000 but I would like to keep it below $100 if I can because that leaves me room to sell immediately if I want and still pull in some cash on the place. The $150 I'd have to work off for a year to see profit. Of course it would be easier if cheri could get her bumm up here and rent when it's open in July/August :oP heh heh I know that budget seems pretty large, but the place needs quite a bit of work. We need to do floor throughout the entire 2600 sq ft (we'll be doing hardwood), quite a bit of drywall work, remove wallpaper from 30' walls in the living area, and upstairs, texture those walls, paint, rebuild the stairway with wood and change out the balastars, remove a ceiling and a wall in the bottom level, and reface a fireplace down there, new kitchen, new deck, redo 3.5 bathrooms from the ground up, yank out a pink brick entry floor, redo the laundry room, new doors, change out all trim, replace a few windows, replace the furnace and hot water heater, and the baseboard hot water heaters, oh and furnish and decorate it for executives :( It's a lot!

Sorry to hear about your rose but his year, for the first time in over 50 years of rose growing a lot of my shoots that I cut back last June have died off. I think it might be due to the lack of good rain but all you can do is cut off the dead bits and hope it will re-generate. Roses are very strong and even though you think they will not survive, they do. Don't feed them when they are not doing well. Wait until they recover then give them a bit of food.

ok great feedback, thanks issues are going to be 1) the local municipality is not going to give the slightest of you know whats. This is a county where 4 bridges have been out since Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and they only had the money to get one fixed a couple years ago. I'm not in a town that might have more rules. And there's not an HOA applicable in this case. (thankfully! had one in NoVA and wished never to deal with one again) 2) he's not going to hear me out at all. In fact if I said something it would just inflame him. The soothsaying local hayseed landscaper has clearly convinced him the tree is in just fine condition...and loves coming out every couple years and making a big production of making sure it stays that way. For example it lost some branches in the big ice storm a couple springs ago. It's in his interest to keep making money off it until a calamity strikes. I'm assuming they will protect it against EAB when it gets here. 3) I would possibly speak with the landscaper when he's over there...which is fairly often because the neighbor guy spends a lot of money "taking care" of his yard...but I'm pretty sure he remembers me and we have a bit of a history. He doesn't like me. We'll leave it at that. Fortunately I found someone much better and cheaper to provide tree trimming services. I like my idea of just printing some photographs - they will have the date on back I've just realized - putting them in my safe deposit box and being done with it. Then let the insurance companies duke it out if it comes to it.

Hmmmm......I wonder if maybe California is a better climate for this rose. Mine is on fortuniana, which is a very vigorous rootstock, and totally adapted to Florida.

I'm not ready to remove it - yet, but I'm thinking this bush may not be the healthiest down here. It'll be interesting to see what anyone else has experienced with it. If I can't keep it healthy I may have to free the space up for another rose eventually.

Where did you get your bush on fortuniana? If it was a very young bush, it may need time to settle in good. Some take off like wild fire. Some others that I have on fortuniana are slow getting settled in. Just cut the blooms off and see what happens.

Mine is own-root, about 2 yrs old, 4.5ft tall. No die-back noted. A couple of canes had to be staked since it went crazy once I planted it in the ground and it's been putting out a lot of new basals and had nearly 40 buds on it at Thanksgiving. It's turned out to be a better bloomer for fall than spring in my garden.

Paul, what would you suggest I do at this point? I really respect your opinions. Since I do not have a greenhouse will this rose never be a happy camper living outside? It's such a beautiful rose!

Sandy, I will not remove mine despite the dieback. It is a very good bloomer and as you noted, better than average in resistance to blackspot. I assume your RI is relatively young, so give it a year or two and decide afterwards.

I think ceterum's advice is quite wise. Be patient and see if it will slowly build itself up. Reports I get on areas where it does well does seem to be from the Southwest portion of the Country.

As an observational side note about two months ago we got in 4 varieties of roses from Delbard in France. Red Intuition, Pink Intuition (six of each) and 20 each of two varieties of as yet un-released Garden Roses. They were all potted up, placed in our greenhouse at the same time. At first I had some dieback with both Intuitions but now they seem to be settling in. The Garden Roses however took off, no die back and are definitely head of the Florist roses.

Well, Paul, tell Delbard that the RI flowers are just so incredible, so amazing, so stunning, that we just can't resist trying. We're only human you know. Why do they tempt us? :)

Thanks, I'll give the rose some time to see if it build some resistance to whatever it doesn't like about Florida. I'll consider this a "test". It certainly wants to grow and bloom here, but it sure has a hard time keeping .

Paul,I plan on trying your line of non-toxic sprays, etc. I won't use toxic spray chemicals any more, but maybe if it is sprayed on a regular basis with your spray material, it'll help to keep it healthier.

Every time I cut a bloom from that rose my husband (who is not a gardener) remarks about how beautiful is, and it lasts a LONG time in the vase.

I wonder if it has something to do with the stripe-gene or something. My PURPLE TIGER has always done the same thing. It dies back and renews itsself all the time. Interesting...

I just wish I could get one to try. Got on a waiting list and it is going on the second year so not really looking good.

It is a beautiful rose flower and so is its sport, Pink Intuition.

I find the Delbard striped Garden Roses to be very healthy. We've had them here going on four years now and I've seen them in gardens all over Europe.

Regarding spraying RI regularly. Yes, when we released them as exhibition roses that is exactly what we meant. They can be grown if you are willing to put in the extra time as opposed to a garden rose. We just wanted to be upfront with the customer.

Our natural rose care line is designed to build the health of the plant and it should work fine for you.

Regarding availability. We have licensed only two nurseries to carry the roses. Wisconsin Roses on multiflora and Johnny Becnel Show Roses on fortuniana. Part of the reason we have plants here is to increase the supply of budwood to them so they can fulfill back orders so fingers crossed you will get one soon!

hello i happened to come across this post and its a few yrs old. i just wanted to note that if anyone is still looking for the ri that cool roses nursery has it. they ship in gallon pots all year round and i just received the red intuition and its doing great so far. anyone know what type special care this rose requires??
