Today has been very odd in terms of weather. Every five minutes something new is going on, be it rain, sun or snow. Here are some familiar scenes for you, but the sky makes them a little more unusual than before I think.

First the barn...

Today is the peak day for the Tamarack trees. Their golden colour makes your heart skip a beat!

Now just look who showed up for a surprise vist! I managed this photo from the upstairs window...in "Sue's room". Later we saw two more and a baby.

Warm drink indeed-that sky looked a bit ominous...

I love the Euonymus europeus-I saw it for the first time at a nursery a month ago and thought it was gorgeous-glad you have one. I haven't heard much about it-how old and what size is yours and do you like it?

The golden color on the Tamarack tree is splendid-what a statement next to the darker nearby foliage.

That first pic is perfect! I am partial to cloudy scenes.
And the harvested corn pic is to my liking also.
I want one of those gorgeous Tamaracks....(you can keep the deer!).
What sort of willow is that? The leaves look like maple.
None of my roses have hips like that. One of Nolon's cousins have one in front of their house that has huge hips.

Mrbrownthumb...That's a very nice pic. Very pro... What's that background you used? And what variety is that? After taking pics of my now 150 plus varieties' flowers for 2 years, I got bored of the usual front, side and close-up shots. They started to look like catalogue pics for me. One reason why I decided to try other backgrounds. It is more challenging, creative and expressive for me of how I see the particular flower giving it a meaning, a purpose, an identity... Lovetheyard...Posting your Vera's pic in the other thread was good. I'm glad that you have joined us again. How about this for a semi-suggestive photo? Miracle...the flirt

I'm back and will chime in on the concert discussions. :) Of course! lol. Summer before last, we attended 4 concerts. That aside, at Kenny Loggins, everyone just pic-nic'd, sitting down and then upon the last song, we all got up and danced through that one and an encore of 3 or 4 songs. We were happy and left with a good feeling. Then The Eagles, where everyone danced in their seats and everyone got to see. We left that one happy too. I guess I don't have to say that at Olivia Newton John, no one had to ask, "Have you never been mellow?", because it was a intimate evening of good song and conversation with her. People stayed in their seats. Then comes Fleetwood Mac- WHOA! - it started out with great music, very tight sound, and everyone dancing in their seats. A couple of gals kind of diagonally in front of us got loopy and started dancing, and the people next to us were visibly upset. They were sitting in their seats and wanted to see the performance. DH and I said nothing, but many people were vocal about it. She finally sat down under protest. The last few songs, eveyone got up and danced and then, so did she, which was fine. Here's my opinion: Everyone pays their money to see the performers and see the live music happen. I don't want to look at someone's bobbing head or shaking tush, but on the other hand, I'm not going to make a big deal out of it either. Some choose to. I want to see the artists playing. I agree with the 'when in Rome', if EVERYONE or at least a large majority decides to dance, it's okay to dance. But, if you want to dance at a concert, move to the aisle, move to the upper back row areas or balcony, or trade seats with someone in a section that's groovin'. Raeanne, truthfully, I think if your girlfriend would have danced in her seat, instead of making a stand, she would have had a good time (maybe not fantastic), she'd have gotten to see the ENTIRE concert, she wouldn't have been hassled, and everyone would have gotten their money's worth and saw what they paid for and came to see- Bette Midler. But if that's the hill she wanted to choose to die on, then she made her choice. You are so right when you say she's an adult and can make her own choices. Unless your friend was loaded and needed assistance making decisions, I think you did the right thing. She made a choice and she faced the consequences. I think when we add in the entitlement factor, we face another issue. Yes, she is allowed to do anything except stand in her seat. And when people protest, she is allowed to talk with management. Maybe they told her something that made her cry, but they deal with this all the time, so they may have asked her to be reasonable to the rest of her seating section. The people behind her are entitled (with their purchase of the ticket) to a clear view of the performer and to enjoy the show. Concert security normally lets the seated part of the crowd police itself. Disruptions are ruled by the majority. Concert security decided to intervene in this one--who knows why?, but she *was* causing a stir. IMHO, she could have sat down, danced in her seat, and she wouldn't have missed anything but a little exercise. Everyone would have gotten their ticket's worth. I can feel for both sides, really. That whole thing is a series of unfortunate events. Bummer.

Hi Everyone, Enjoyed a lovely dinner last night and cards with our dear friends. I ate Shepherd's pie (crustless type), biscuits and ice cream. Yes I went over my daily limit but I am not worried. I do the WW program and actually just used up my weekly freebie points or calories. Today and tomorrow I am in recovery mode to compensate. So what does my day look like? Cottage cheese 1%, home made barley soup loaded with veggies for lunch, apple for snack and dinner will be a full plate of steamed zucchini, squash, onion and a cooked egg. I will literally load that plate and put a spoon of margarine, salt & pepper. Of course water, water, water today. Why am I telling you this? Because you can deal with a meal event. I faithfully logged how much I had last night and noted the points/calorie values. I know where I stand. I am not deterred at all. I continue. Did I have a large serving? Yes, honestly and honestly two biscuits. Today I am quite happily puttering away at little jobs around the house and enjoying my healthy food choices. So don't despair when you have these moments. You dust yourself off and carry on. If you know a meal event is coming - plan a head. Reduce your calories a day or two ahead and then a day or two afterwards. Don't beat yourself up. Don't regret, feel bad - just do your best and keeping putting one foot in front of the other. You can do this. You can persevere through these moments in life. That is part of living a healthy lifestyle. Just be honest with yourself. Over the coming weeks I want to talk about planning ahead and then staying the course. There is a major meal event/weekend coming up in November for those of you in the US and I'd like to open the communication lines on how to deal successfully with it so you can enjoy your friends and family. Focus on the joy of the fall season. We'll get through that time together I promise and you will continue with your goals. That's what I wanted to say today to everyone, even those silent friends we have out there reading but not posting. I'm reaching out to invite you to come back and read our posts, share our journey. You don't have to share on here to be a part of our journey together. Just come back. If we can help you stay true to your dream then that is all I'm trying to achieve. Thanks, bruglover! I do feel pretty good about my progress so far. :-) Congrats on finding such a simple solution to your problem!! I can honestly say I never would have thought of that, but it's partially because of how *I* travel. I've never actually unpacked clothes while traveling. Granted, I don't iron, so I don't generally own anything that will wrinkle badly, but it was a completely foreign concept to me when I first traveled with my husband to see him unpack his clothes into hotel drawers. I've always just "lived" out of my suitcase, no matter where I went. Anyways, I'm sure your guest will be much more comfortable for all the organizing you put in. :-) Last night, I got going about 10pm, and ended up spending an hour and a half on the "bad" side of the closet. I didn't take "before" pictures, just dove right into the mess. And while I still have all that yarn to sort through (and untangle/cut apart), it's now much more organized so I can see what I have, and pull portions out one at a time to go through. I also sorted my "cool weather" clothing into type and color, so it's easy to see and get to. Here's what that side looks like now: I've decided to leave the sweatshirts hanging for now - there's plenty of room, and it won't hurt them. Those boxes on top the shelf are both full of yarn, as are the containers below on the floor, but I'll sort through them eventually. Then the sweatshirts may move to that shelf. And I finished the floor on the other side, so it looks like this: Much better, I think. The basket on the floor is for hangers once I'm done with them, so it's easier to carry them downstairs. They are jumbled now, but that's because there's three different types. Next payday (the 31st), I'm replacing all of my hangers with satin padded hangers. They won't tangle up as badly, they hold the clothes a bit higher on the rod, and I think they just look nice. :-) The table underneath is an antique I don't really have a place for. So I think I'll get some baskets to fit on that lower shelf, and use them for belts and whatever else I need. I've decided I don't need a second lower rod after all - there's plenty of room on the main rod for all my clothes, even spread out. :-) Finally, I've decided to take the doors off the closet, and replace them with curtains. I feel "stifled" by the small amount of space I have access to with these big doors, and having to move them around when I need something from the other side. With curtains, I'll be able to access my whole closet at once, which means I won't have to just use the left side for storage, I can keep my cold weather clothes there permanantly, and just use different areas of the closet as needed. I have a wonderful full-lenth mirror surrounded by mosaic stained glass that my mom made for me - it's in the hall right now (sitting against a closet door that it's too heavy to hang on). I think I'll set that in the center of my closet, and attach the top to the shelf above, so it's right there where I'm dressing in the mornings (and out of the way of the hall closet door). That's about all I can do for now (aside from sorting yarn). I realized last night that I can't take down those wire shelves until I make curtains for that window, because it opens towards the neighbor's house, and I dress in there every morning. So the "stuff" on the shelves blocks the view from the neighbors'. ;-) My mom is giving me one of her old sewing machines this weekend, and around payday, I'll head out to find some fabric to make matching curtains for the closet and windows in the room (or I'll find some I like and buy them...either way works for me). Anyone else with progress to report?

Bug your barn is so photogenic. I never tire of seeing it and quite like it with the moody sky.
I am partial to grasses too and think they are really nice near water.
Will the workers have to tear up the patio?

My first thought when I opened this thread was, "Wow Marie's barn is just so photogenic" and I see that Norma has beat me to it. I think you need to do a calendar of just photos of your barn in all the seasons. It would be lovely. If I lived closer I'd do one for myself. Wjhat a fun project that would be. And the tamarack tree is simply beautiful. One time we visited Doug's cousins in Rockland ME and there was a large stand of them all 'gussied' up with their fall color. Gorgeous! That 'Huron Sunrise' is really lovely. I don't recall, how tall is that one? Thanks for all the lovely pics. Nice way to start my day.

Spindle tree (Euonymus europaeus) is one of the larger types of euonymus. It grows 12 to 30 feet tall and spreads 10 to 25 feet. It has no particular soil preference and grows best in sun or partial shade. The growth rate is moderate and it transplants easily. The red and orange fall fruits are the main ornamental feature.

Cultivars include: 'albus'--white fruit: 'aldenhamensis'--showy fruit; 'intermedius'--bright red fruit; 'plumilius'--dwarf.

As for me, I love Spindle trees. I first saw them at the nearby arboretum in Guelph and NEEDED one. Well that one ended up being many more, as people were giving them away to me! I must have at least six of them by now! They are about shoulder height for me now, perhaps 3 years old. If you were next door, I'd give you one! I'm amazed that they have so many berries at such a young age. I was told they grow to 8 feet, so planted them far too close together if in fact they do grow 30' by 25'. I suspect they won't in my climate, but you never know!

Marian, that 'willow' confuses me too. I'm told by everyone it is a plain old willow...but the leaves sure don't look it to me either. It gets some disease in about July every year and turns brown. It is huge and I'm not about to have it sprayed. I met the woman who planted it too. She got it as a little sapling from her sister years ago.

Norma, the patio is being reset around the edge where it meets the house. They will add sand to raise the area a good deal. (They'll drive their equipment across the lawn too. You can imagine my fears! If I were to enherit a million dollars, I'd much prefer a flagstone patio, but that isn't going to happen.

Deanne, I too love tamarack trees. I've heard so many odd stories of people who have bought them and then lamented that they died and had them removed. They never knew they lost their needles each year! Oh, and the Huron Sunrise is about 3 1/2 feet tall and maybe 3 feet wide....so far!

GB Â I second the suggestion of making a calendar of photos of that barn! Very photogenic. I like the brooding clouds (as long as they donÂt mean snowÂ) Is that skunks in the picture? Do you need to do what I did? ThereÂs a bucket of de-odorizing supplies under the back porch in anticipation of an encounter with the family living under the shed!

'bug, what a lot of wonderful fall color you have. I really like the Huron Sunrise, the Euonymus europeus and the tamarack. Do you know what rose that is with all the hips. What great fall and winter interest. I was thinking about Janie not too long ago and wondering how her new front garden was doing.

Michelle, I'm not positive, but I think we are talking about The Apothecary Rose. It was given to me by a friend.
"The ApothecaryÂs Rose is still used for its highly fragrant qualities in potpourri, soothing teas, lotions and other cosmetics. It grows to 5 ft. and spreads by suckering. ItÂs rated by the American Rose Society at 8.6 Â almost as high as you can get."

Woody, in the photo there's a camouflaged deer, no skunks I hope! There are loads of road killed skunks about though. I too keep the skunk supplies in a back cupboard. I would never have an adequate quantity of peroxide needed for an emergency unless I planned ahead!

Hi Bug! Always a treat to see what is happening down on the farm. I love those rose hips, and your bridge path. How did you get your Honeysuckle to bloom so late? Maybe I need more fertilizer? Mine only bloomed one time... and I thought that was normal. Must do research. And the TAmarack! Wow, everyone has definitely given me something to aim for in the fall!

'bug - Realized I never personally said my WOW!!!. Thank you for taking us along.

About Apothecary Rose (did you really think I'd leave it alone??? LOL) This variety of Gallica has been used in medicinal herb gardens for as long medicinal herb gardens have been planted. It is believed by some to be as old as Rosa chinensis, which predates European botanical records. The really good ones survive despite humans, yes??

Marie, I've seen alot of pictures of your barn and can now say I've even taken a few, but that first picture is just stunning! Talk about capturing weather...those are some stormy skies. Like Marian, you live in the midst of natural beauty and I am envious.
