Source for Plastic Planting Bags

I'm planting fruit trees that have strong vertical roots such as mango, cashew and avocado and want to plant them tall bags so that the tap roots don't circle around the bottom of a shallow bag. Does anyone know a good source in the USA for planting bags?

The ideal bag size would be approximately 10-15 cm (4"-6") diameter and 30 cm (12") depth. I can't simply use 'bigger' bags due to the large number of seedlings and the soil/weight requirement.

I googled "tree nursery supplies" but didn't find the tall bags I'm looking for. I know they exist because I saw them on a YouTube video a few months ago.

Dave, thanks for the links, and pardon my possible error, but I do not find the tall bags I am looking for on either of those links. I don't need the most common sizes; I need TALL bags, like a Pringles can but a little wider so the tap roots have room to grow. If they sell what I'm looking for, please give me specific directions.

There are all manner of things you can do/add and much depends on your soil. The best basic is to dig your hole about three inches deeper than the roots. (The graft (bud knot) should be just below the top of the soil. ) Then mix the soil you took out of the hole with an equal amount of compost. Put the three inches back in the hole, put in the rose, and fill in. Be sure the soil is well packed but not (hard-compressed) around the roots--no air spaces. Water it in. Do not fertilize it yer. If you plant it in the morning, the water will have a chance to taken in and drain down, which guards against night freezes.

There is a fast growing industry in collecting and composting organic waste, especially food scrap. So bagged compost is not just going to be manure anymore, it's yard trimmings, tree limbs and food scrap. Some contamination is inevitable. Lots of the food scrap haulers use compostable can liners, but not all, so you may find bits of plastic now and then. Plastic itself is merely a nuisance in the garden, not a toxic problem. If you're concerned about what else goes in, keep bugging the producer and ask them what their inputs are.

I've tried cuttings from bacopa before, and from what I can remember, I had them covered for about 2 weeks. But, what I do is, uncover them for about a hour or two to see if they wilt or not. If they wilt, then they don't have any roots yet and get covered again for a few days and then test again. And yes, the condensation is a good thing :) I've always been under the impression that cuttings shouldn't have any direct(hot) light until they have rooted sufficiently or else they'll dry up. My kitchen faces north and that's the window I use to start cuttings. There's still a fair amount of light from the north, but no direct light. This has always worked for me anyway, maybe some others have their cuttings under lights and they do well? Laurie

Yes, but these freshly sprouted seeds are difficult to transplant without damaging them. I think it is much easier to sow very fine seeds in a container than in a plastic bag. If seeds need a cold period just put the container in a plastic bag and place it in the fridge.

Well there is Tubex http://www.arborday.org/shopping/trees/TreeDetail.cfm?ID=271

but they are quite a bit more expensive. The easiest and least costly I know of are the ones I linked above. You just roll them into a tube of whatever size you want depending on the size of your cuttings, stand it up, separate the sides into one chamber with a bottom, and fill 1 chamber of the tube. For example the 1 gallon bags are 10" tall so rolled in 1/2 you end up with 3" in diameter, 10" tall tube.

You can also make your own rooting tubes out of any 3-4mil thick roll of plastic. Just cut a piece in the dimensions you want (height x finished diameter), turn it into a tube, overlap and tape the edges with duct tape, fold in the bottom like and envelope to seal it off, and melt in drain holes with any hot metal object - I use a soldering iron.
