Hey Guys Here's My Ang Leonis!!!!!!!(Pics)

Hello it finnaly arrived!!!!! i knew that when i got it to expect the largest bud to be yellow and shriveld, and it was hahahah but im not mad why should i be? so any way i feel that you all should order from cal-orchids!!!!! they are amazing!! i called back to tell her that it came and she said oh great!! i told her that 1 of the buds was yellow and she said yeah i know cause it was a little yellow when it was here. Based on what im seeing from the spikes im guessing they are sequential bloomers? there are a few new buds forming!!! she told me to stick my fingers down in the mix to about my second knuckle and wait till my finger barely registers moisture before i water it again so finnaly enough waiting here it is. No flower though but you can be sure I will post when ther is one!!!! My Baby!!!! Is finally Here!!!!!

She Said its their fault the bud turned yellow because when they went on bussines the other growers watered them a little too much. its soooooo green it is so beautiful!!!!! im going to love having this in my room. Its funny i feel like im preparing my plants for a tanning session because ive lined the walls under the lights with foil to act as a reflector. i did that because its over top of my dresser that is brown and it absorbed alot of the light so i did the foil thing and put wax paper on the dresser surface. So Thets my Baby, look for pics when it blooms!!!!! Promise? also How long before the buds open if they dont blast before then? the plant is about 8 inches from the lights

AWW it is so cute... I have ang. didieri that I bought from them and it bloomed last year in Feb but the spurr did not fully unravel. not sure why but it was cute anyways... I might need to buy one of those leonis I have had my eye on it since last year. very cool orchind and how exciting the spikes!

I saw the growers from Cal-orchid in Kansas City for the orchid show a few weekends ago (probably when they were away in your response). All of the plants they brought were very healthy looking and were selling like hotcakes. Nice prices for the size plants. I had ordered something from them, when I knew they would be at the show, and they had it waiting for me, saved me the shipping charges. I will order from the again. Tom

I'm going to try to get pics today. Glad to hear everyone is doing okay. C3D, I would have put up electric fence ;) 9,000 gallons is a good size. A bit overwhelming to plan out though. Mary, I'm so sorry to hear about Sasha. To me it's the worst way to loose a dog. That's what happened to Nebt-Het it was devastating even to Isis. When they're sick you have some time to come to terms with it. Heather, i can't compare temp that's for sure but suffice it to say it wants to be spring here but it's not working. Last week it snowed just enough to make everything icy. Not too bad until you figure it was about 80 the day before. Hey zinnia.. fishy, I'm sorry. Maybe you could install a locking top? Brenda, I have to work too hard ;) That's how you end up with more hours than everyone else. Hi Sheila! Don't remove growths! The fact that your plant is sending out multiple growths is a great sign that it's healthy. Also, each growth will bloom when they are large enough. I'm guessing from the size of the leaf span that you have the Comoros Island variety -- which is my preference for this species. All growths augment the plant's photosynthesis and sugar/hormone production. Removing growths will reduce the overall capacity of the plant. I'd say no more fertilizer until March, and following the first of December or so let it dry a bit more between waterings than you're accustomed to doing. Depending upon your humidity, you could go as long as two weeks. Since yours is mounted (also my preference), a 30-minute dunk may be necessary after drying out since it's difficult to re-hydrate substrate with just a casual spritz or two. These are spring bloomers. As long as you're reasonably bright, I'm almost certain you'll start seeing buds in March or so. You may be fooled that it doesn't appear to be growing, but this species continues to "spread" the size of leaves almost like a succulent without sending out new leaves all the time. The leaves of most orchids are generally "fixed" once they unfold, but not these guys. I think you're on track to have a beautiful plant! Keep up what you're doing! I had a massive specimen that I lost when we moved here to the Panhandle, and now I've got a couple tiny ones I'm impatiently tapping my foot over! ;-) -Bruce

Oh, Patty, thank you very much. I am happy to say that I am glad that I came back to hear from you good folks again. I put my patio enclosure in the back burner of my plans again. Or it may not come true at all now. I am just happy with the changes I made and I put it to good use. I raised the roof to 8 ft high and clear quiet a number of clutters so when I had a party one night (not planned)everybody had so much fun. We hold it to the patio I mean all the teenagers congregate there and they create their own entertainment like dancing with the blazing music and they tried to outdo one another to the blaze of the music. Glad the neighbors did not complain. The adults sang songs to the kareoki playing in the living room. After my vacation, I am tempted to add a vacation home to my vacant lot with a swim pool. It's very affordable because the labor is so cheap there. Dale: Thanks for the welcome. Glad to hear from you again. Yes, the first thing I did was spray my citrus the minute I got home for aphids. And I bet they are glad to see me again.

Ack! dlm, I forgot to post back. First, my gray is a Dove Gray (light). In darker areas it's a mid-level, maybe a battleship gray? Charlie's soap powder form, diluted in water, scrubbed, let it sit, scrubbed again, wiped. Probably got it up to 60%. Then I did a different section with diluted Charlie's soap and Oxyclean scrubbed in on top of that. Let sit maybe 20 min, scrubbed, 'rinsed'. Much better. Not 100% like the light Dove gray at outer perimeters of floor, but easily 80 to 85%. Close enough you have to really be staring at it to see the difference. (Can't get a pic to show it well, shadows from vanity are throwing off grout.) So I'll clean it good that way & immediately seal, and I'll be happy. :) If you want to check it out, I don't know how close this is to you, but if I'm downtown & need some CS I get it Be By Baby (Wrigleyville area). Easy metered parking on side street (I always find a spot - a miracle!). Or you can go to CS website, maybe there's a dealer near you. (Not me, it's either downtown or mail.) I also get through Amazon. Free super saver shipping + $11.50 or so is a good price. (Think it's about $14 at Be By Baby). I wasn't impressed with their bottled spot treatment. For the price I just put a scoop (abt 1TB) of powder in a spray bottle, make my own, works just as well.

ahhh .......that IS a cutie alright!! I just wish you were a little more thrilled with it...LOL. No really I just wanted to say congrats, and it's refreshing to see someone so enthused..;o).......
And YES, pictures please when that baby blooms!!!

Congratulations, I know how you feel, I get the same way when I get a new plant (especially one I've waited a long time for). If you can feel that kind of joy, revel in it, so few people know how to find joy in little things. I'll be watching for the pictures of the blooms.

its so much fun taking care of it!!!!!!!! I think that all my plants are my babies but this one is actually a baby sized plant! in pic three down, the bud right under the large one has pushed itself out and the spike is gotten a little bit longer. That happend overnight. so with this plant i will have three things in my house in bloom. The Ang Leonis, Blc. Campobello Mendenhall HCC/AOS, and Hoya Fungii. so its going to be a happy winter!!!!!!! i will be posting pics soon for the Ang For you guys!!!!!! I want another one just because they are so Tiny and i have the room!!!

Mine just broke Buds. :-) Looks like 4 on each spike. Happy with the results. 1st time the plant will bloom. A baby at 24" :-) They sure don't disappoint! We should pass the cigars;-), we are both about to be "Ang Parents". Much success!

congrats to you both! you are so lucky. I have bought from Cal Orchids this summer and I do find that their plants were very well looked after: white succulent roots and vibrant green leaves. so far, they are doing well for me. I look forward to the photos of your flowers. thanks for sharig.

the buds look translucent is that okay? also is the nectary going to get longer than that or is that it? oh everyday the spikes look different!!!do I cut the spikes when they are done? I hope it all goes well. How strong is the fragrance I hope is enough to perfume my room!!! oh I love these little guys! LOL

Actually there is a pretty good book available titled ANGRAECOID ORCHIDS, Species From The African Region, by Joyce Stewart, Johan Hermans and Bob Campbell. I'm sure it won't be the last book written on angs, but it is a pretty comprehensive study, with some pretty pictures thrown in. It would make a great Christmas present!

cattleya you have the whole wonderful world wide web at your fingertips and can find valuable information every where, not just here. The only two angs I have don't come close to yours so I have no information to give you. Enjoy watching your spikes grow, buds open, the wonderful fragrance and post more pictures for us non Ang. leonis owners. You might entice me to add one to my collection!

Not to be picky but I actually consider Stewart, et. al. to be comprehensive. The 'new Ang bible' as I fondly think of it, covers all the (known at publish date) 690 species of Angraecoid orchids. I definitely hope Brooke is right and it will not be the last Ang book written. It has elevations for all the species, you can't ask for much more than that.

If one is resourceful, one can find the 'old Ang bible', "An Introduction to the Cultivated Angraecoid Orchids of Madagascar" by Hillerman and Holst, published in 1986. Oh to have been Ang-aware in the mid 80s...*sigh*
It is out of print and remains the most expensive book I've ever bought. Last I saw one available, the price was $100 MORE than I paid. :) (get it on inter-library loan)

One might also consider "African orchids in the wild and in cultivation" by Isobyl and Eric LaCroix, available quite cheap on amazon.

"Orchids of Kenya" by Stewart & Campbell.

"Orchids of Africa" by Stewart & Hennesey.

"Orchids of Tropical Africa" by Stewart & Campbell.

I even have "Orchids of Malawi" by Morris. Good luck finding that! :)

Of course more books will be written on angs. We are patiently waiting for your book.

My Ang. germanyanum is getting spikes and finally, my Ang. distichum is creating additional growths plus it appears to be getting ready to have LOTS of blooms instead of a measley one or two, teeninsy (southern term) blooms. It's a good thing we have a great macro lens.
