Spilling or Weeping Tree Roses

Hi,

I'm considering buying a couple of weeping (spilling? I've heard them referred to both ways) tree roses. There is a small landscape supply near me that has a few 60" Pillowfights and Renaes. They are bare right now so I looked up the roses on the 'net and from what I can tell from pictures both are pretty and will look great in my garden.

Does anyone have experience with either Pillowfight or Renae? Disease resistance, pruning? etc.? I don't mind some maintenance (I use Bayer to keep black spot, etc. at bay on my other roses) but I don't have time to baby and hover either. Are spilling roses any harder to take care of than other standards? I have 18each 48" Mr. Lincoln trees lining our front walk that are two years old and so far so good...

Also, does anyone know if 60" standards are available anywhere else? I've only been able to find 48" and below from Weeks and J&P.

Jacqueline, Renae is a WONDERFUL rose. It's a Ralph Moore rose, and it's everything you'd love Cl. Cecile Brunner to be, including a generous repeater.
I'm fairly sure it's in the Heritage as a Standard, and it covers the old patio at Sequoia Nursery.
A wonderful rose, from one of the great masters of roses.

Regans has some 60 inch standards they get from Otto and sons.
Weeks no longer grows 60 inch trees. J&P only advertises 24 & 36 inch trees

Austin or old rose to spill over wall or large pot?

The larger Austins, such as Abraham Darby (my favorite!), Teasing Georgia, Janet and Spirit of Freedom will all flop if you don't prune them hard. They're beautiful, fragrant roses which should look wonderful draped over a wall, although I would think they'd all be too big for pots. Mine are all disease-free but then all my roses are. I don't grow disease-prone roses such as the bourbons so don't know how those would do in southern CA but have no desire to when we have the teas, chinas, noisettes and Austins that do well here. Noisettes would probably also work well over a wall although of course they'll get very large. Ingrid

Pattie, I have a Partridge (Wichurana cross) which was planted in less than ideal soil to cover a couple of tree stumps and a stretch of barren ground in between. I have never seen such a vigorous plant. It throws the longest supple canes and has to be severely cut back to stop it crossing the path and attacking the house. Last year (second year in my garden) it bloomed from early June to October, it's completely healthy, undemanding, and has the most heavenly sweet perfume which actually scents the air. It's classed as a ground cover (and as such will run along the ground and root itself all over the place) but might well work for you cascading down the wall. You might want to post this on the general Roses Forum for more responses. That stem coming up from the soil is a sucker from the rootstock, you definitely want to dig down and rip this out.

I have had my 60" standard Renae for about 5 years now. It's been a good one. Renae has a wonderful sweet honey kind of fragrance and repeat is very steady. Last year I could not prune it because it had a nesting bird and little peeping baby birds in it, but I'll get to it this year.
In this picture it is trimmed up a bit, it's weepier right now because of the baby birds.

Thank you so much for the replies! I'm excited about Renae now. Hoovb, your yard looks gorgeous. Anyone have pictures of Pillowfight or know much about it? How about any other spilling standard favorites?

Hoovb, my mother changes out her front door wreath with the seasons. For the last three springs she has had a finch family build a nest in her flower themed wreaths. The birds are cute but are very messy, so last spring she hung a wreath made from sharp pointy sea shells and star fish hung on a metal wire. She thought the birds would be encouraged to raise their family somewhere a little more hospitable. Those clever birds filled the back side of a large shell with grass and twigs and before she could do anything about it there were four little eggs!

Also, what did you use in place of the ugly green tape? I'd love to find something better looking!

I love standards - I have had lots but have diminished through many reasons, frost in the early days, deer devistation in later years and in between three whole heavey heads snapped off in heavey snow.

I still have in the front, high standards as you are describing 5'. Two Flower CArpet and two Pearl Mediland(sp)
I had four flower carpet - (one left) it was the weight of the snow that got them. Had four Crysler Imperial, frost got them and four double delight, deer saw them off, one is hanging in - should have moved it to the deerfenced back and it would have stood a chance. I find the higher standards, 5'0" as opposed to 3'6" are just about out of deer reach, so I actually can have them in the front as long as I start taking better care of them. Harrumph!

When you first talked of weeping standards Jacqueline, I thought you were talking about the older ones where rambling roses are budded on to them, like Dorothy Perkins then there is a white one similar. I craved for years for these, but since having Dorothy Perkins as a rambler over a rose arch, I do not think I could ever entetain her again. It has been the worst blackspotter in my whole rose life. So that put me off having those standars with the great height of 6'0" - but they look gorgeous in photgraphs.

Have fun picking out your new standards and success in ordering them. I know I want some more badly which will be happily planted in our deer-free back garden!
