If you have 10 SDLM (Souvenir de la Malmaison)... I wanna know how they're doing for you. I just bought one own root yesterday at Roses of Yesterday in person. I shovel pruned my previous one (which was not own root). I am really hoping to find a great spot for her. One that's more protected maybe from the little rain we get. Any suggestions?

Jeff, I'm glad to hear you say that about Mystic Beauty. Mine is not quite one year old so I can't say much about her. I'm looking forward to this next year. I have her very close to Capitaine Dyel de Graville. So much so that I'm sure they will look like one bush with two different color flowers eventually. Oh, well, I'm hoping it will be a good thing.

Sammy, have you tried Capitaine Dyel de Graville? You might as well get Mystic Beauty. :))

Sammy, based on Michael's reports on what blackspots for him, he lives in the area with very high BS pressure. I believe he has it worse than OK. So if this rose gets not much disease for him is a really good sign.
Here SDLM gets BS badly, as most other repeat flowering roses. I didn't try MB or MoP myself.

I agree with what Jeff said about Mystic Beauty. Here in the mountains we have extreme conditions for botrytis petal blight and balling. MB is much better than SDLM and the others of that family, except Kronprinzessin Viktoria, which is more resistant than MB--MB balls occasionally for me, but not like SDLM. If you don't have much trouble with SDLM balling in the cool rain, you don't need MB, because it's otherwise the same ass SDLM. But in my climate, MB is a much better rose.

predfern or someone else in the Midwest has recommended Mother of Pearl on the same grounds as me-- BS resistant, hardy, free-blooming and attractive bush; beautiful and extremely long-lasting flower; slight but noticeable fragrance.

I do have very heavy blackspot pressure, but I can't promise resistance for every garden, owing to the various races of the fungus.

I grew Mother of Pearl. I found it to be an OK rose but I didn't love it so I gave it away after a few years. It does stay low--under 3 feet and it is wider than tall. It is very disease resistant in the rainy pacific northwest. My main issue with it was the color. My rose wasn't quite as peachy as what you see on Help Me Find--it was pinker. Unfortunately it was planted near David Austin's Evelyn, Anne Boleyn, and Elina. These other three roses have pure colors that make MoP look dingy in comparison. It seemed to like hot weather. The form of the blooms are not as refined as the David Austins or hybrid teas. It did tend to bloom when other roses were resting. Overall it is an easy care rose but it lacks something in refinement.

I don't know how well these do in really hot weather, But Ann Boleyn and Pretty Lady are lower growing, disease resistant roses that do well here.

Everyrose - only 3 feet tall? HMF lists it as "tall, bushy"?

Michael - How tall is your specimen? I already ordered it but may have to rethink where I'll plant it.

I've grown Mystic Beauty for the past 6 years and it really impresses me -- quick to rebloom, blooms not damaged by rain and disease-resistant. Mine is about 3' x 3'.

For me, MB is a vigorous grower, much stronger than SDLM.

OTOH, SDLM blooms are much more fragrant than MB.

BaaBaaRaa, my SDLM are great. My only problem is that one nursery confuses them with climbers, so I need to leave the long shoots until we have heavy rains, then separate the climbers from the regular rose. In the total scheme of rose growing, that is ok, but when they send 3 sprouts together, and I must take out 2, then that rose will not grow well with the others, and I need to complain to get another rose which they do readily send. (Most of my SDLM are in beds with each other.) They are magnificent.

Thanks, Jeff. I am still thinking. If I do purchase from RU, I need 4 roses or the cost is prohibitive. Balling is not a huge problem with me. It gets so hot here, and the rebloom of SDLM is fast enough that I just snap those blooms and more come on.

Sherry, Captitaine is tempting, but it does not seem to be available to me.

THanks Olga. We have sudden bouts with black spot, but the turn around is fast, and suddenly the rose is clean. Often this happens in August as I go back to school and am very busy.

Michael, I am still thinking about the MOP. I am wondering if others farther south have not responded because it does not like the heat or it fades. Last year we had weeks of temps at or over 100. Others will respond if they like the rose well. I do need to find 4 of their roses or it is too expensive.

Everyrose, that is very helpful. I am a little worried about it fading, and not matching my other roses.

Maureen, Mother of Pearl is around 5' for me.

Sammy, I haven't heard any hot-climate reports, but mine is happy in our summers (80s-low 90s).

Perhaps my MoP stayed low because I hard pruned it.
