I live in Emeryville, which is pretty close to Alameda.
I've found that it really matters how much shade a rose is grown in, even a half hour more sun can make the difference between 3 flushes a year and 2. From experience I reccomend if you're planning to plant a rose in partial shade, keep it in a pot for the first year, where you wish to plant it, to see if it blooms well there, if it does not it will be easy to move, or replace it with a more shade tolerant rose.
In our rose garden,
5 hours full sun with 2-3 hours partial sunlight, where sunlight is still strong enough to cast a shadow from ones' hand allows
"Bubble Bath" to bloom 3-4 times a year. Mine is about to have another flush if the colored buds don't rot in this rainstorm (week of January 23!). The blooms are quite fragrant and the scent carries on the air. "Bubble Bath is the most shade tolerant remontant rose I have ever grown.
We moved an "Alistair Stella Gray" to the same area as "Bubble Bath" and it stopped blooming, but did well where it received 6 hours full sun and 2 hours of partial sun.
"Crepescule" has been blooming well with 6 hours full sun and 2 hours of partial sun, it appears to be a bit more tolerant of shade than our "Mme. Alfred Carriere".

To those who live in summer- foggy S.F. I'd allow for more sun.

Luxrosa, what a great idea, putting the rose in a large pot! How could I have missed that one?? I have never thought of putting a rose in that spot by my office, but I whacked the previous owners' big shrubs last summer, and can now do my own landscaping. Havent had time to really access how much sun it gets, but looked at the site again this afternoon, and think that it might get good mid day sun. We have had such dreary weather that I have nearly forgotten what the sunshine is like. And with all the leaves off the trees.......its hard to tell. Does Bubble Bath want to be a climber or at least a sort of pillar rose?

Oh, and I live in Texas - the Alameda stands for my horse farm - Alameda Farm. I have raised Arabians for 35 years, now Miniature Horses since 1986. And am a daylily lover too! We get intense sun here, am 2 hours from Houston. I have several big pots just waiting for an occupant! Now just need to decide on a rose. The metal trellis is very large, looks Moroccan, very pretty. It will look lovely on that wall.......perhaps some clematis too.....Would love to hear more suggestions......and thanks!

I'll be trying Ghislaine de Feligonde; it's supposed to do well in sun or part shade, as I understand.

Ghislaine is on my list for Antique Rose Emporium this spring! I am going to be watching this spot carefully - we got sunshine today for the first time in a few weeks, but I had to be gone from 1:30 onwards - it was in shade until then......I need to see if this wall gets any overhead light or afternoon sun.....if not, this may not be a place for any rose, shade tolerating or not. I would really love to have a rose there.....perfect wall for one.

What about Buff Beauty?

I think Buff Beauty would look nice. I saw it growing as a climber at a nursery last weekend and the smell is HEAVENLY. My favorite fragrance of all the roses I have so far. The flowers look beautiful too. I'll be adding BB this year.

Yes, the hybrid musks can handle shade and so can some of the noisettes, tho I've found they get leggy and don't blom as profusely.
I wouldn't put a climber in a pot unless it is a really huge pot, altough you could get one started in a pot, give it a year or two to get enough growth to catch more sun and then put it in the ground.

I know this isnt an antique but I had heard that Sally Holmes does well in shade. I purchased one but moved before I could see how it did in my shady spot. With the smaller petal count you may even get more flushes than with a fuller count. Maybe someone else can add to this possibility.

Buff Beauty does very well in less than full sun situation- it just may grow bigger.
I also find that Prosperity blooms very well and stays healthy in a spot getting partial sun.
