yellow climber that can take a little shade?

Arbor gets heavy shade am, dappled shade noonish, full sun 2pm til 6 pm. I really want clear pretty yellow, not that garish gold like Stella d'Oro daylilies.

Looking at Roberta Bondar, Zeus, and Casino, but can't find anything about their shade tolerance on line.

Disease resistant, repeat bloomer would be nice. All those other qualities plus fragrant would be really amazing.

I've been growing Casino for years. HUGE!!! healthy climber that should do well for you. When I make my move to NE GA I'll be growing Casino.

I live in Emeryville, which is pretty close to Alameda. I've found that it really matters how much shade a rose is grown in, even a half hour more sun can make the difference between 3 flushes a year and 2. From experience I reccomend if you're planning to plant a rose in partial shade, keep it in a pot for the first year, where you wish to plant it, to see if it blooms well there, if it does not it will be easy to move, or replace it with a more shade tolerant rose. In our rose garden, 5 hours full sun with 2-3 hours partial sunlight, where sunlight is still strong enough to cast a shadow from ones' hand allows "Bubble Bath" to bloom 3-4 times a year. Mine is about to have another flush if the colored buds don't rot in this rainstorm (week of January 23!). The blooms are quite fragrant and the scent carries on the air. "Bubble Bath is the most shade tolerant remontant rose I have ever grown. We moved an "Alistair Stella Gray" to the same area as "Bubble Bath" and it stopped blooming, but did well where it received 6 hours full sun and 2 hours of partial sun. "Crepescule" has been blooming well with 6 hours full sun and 2 hours of partial sun, it appears to be a bit more tolerant of shade than our "Mme. Alfred Carriere". The distinctly serrated foliage, and especially the clear yellow coloring with slight orange blending in the first two photos, look very much like 'Sutter's Gold, Climbing' to me. The orange shading tends to be more pronounced under cool conditions. The 1950 timeframe also works for this climber. In an 'ideal' climate, 'Sutter's Gold, Cl' has fairly good repeat; otherwise, it produces an impressive spring flush with very few (if any) blooms thereafter. Sometimes it surprizes with a secondary flush in the fall. Good fragrance, BTW.

As long as it's bright shade you have a lot of options. Many vines will do well or at least TOLERATE light shade, especially if you're not growing them for flowers. (In fact many--most?--vines are adapted to surviving in shade until they can climb up to the sun.) Porcelain berry is a terrible weed. It doesn't grow in my garden but pops up all over from little "gifts" the birds leave for me, and grows very rapidly. Consider Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) as an attractive alternative--it's also rather weedy but at least it's native and has nice fall color. Its Chinese cousin, Parthenocissus henryana, is somewhat less aggressive, has very handsome silver-marked foliage and similar brilliant red fall foliage. Trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans) will take some shade, although it may not bloom as well as in sun. Ditto some clematis, although how much shade they will tolerate will probably depend on the species or cultivar. Other vines that will do well in light shade are hops (Humulus) and Akebia. Even some grape species will grow in shade, as long as you're not growing it for fruit.

Vaporvac, ac91z6 - I have both Florentina and Princess Alex de Lux, and I highly recommend them both. Florentina I've had for about 4 years and it's an enthusiastic bloomer all season with entirely cane hardy survival in an average zone 5 spot. The blooms are very full and dark red and it's among my favorite climbers these days. PadL is newer, since she just went in last spring, but I can already tell she's a typically enthusiastic Kordes rose. She's putting out canes in every direction trying to elbow wimpy neighbors out of the way, and I've seen clusters of those thickly petaled blooms off and on all season. She hasn't gotten to her third season yet so her repeat isn't all that frequent, but I don't expect that in a rose's second year. I think she had some but not all surviving cane over the winter, which is typical of most of my roses. Both were from Palatine for me, and both have done extremely well. Cynthia

I wouldn't worry at all about the shade tolerance, it sounds like you have plenty of sun.

Look at the hybrid musks. Most are shade tolerant.

I would highly recommend Lemon Meringue. I grow its siblings Westerland (orange) and Autumn Sunset (gold) which do quite well with just a few hours of sun. Great disease resistance and fragrance too.

As Jeri mentioned, Reve d'Or is great. Casino is a somewhat lighter, clearer yellow with very large flowers that often bloom in clusters. Mine has more shade than yours and has bloomed twice this year, as a young plant.

If you want a clear yellow, then Casino would probably be more what you are looking for. I have a friend who grows it in some shade but I'm not sure exactly how many hours of shade/sun that it gets. It's a lovely rose. Reve d'Or is more of a creamy/apricot color here in the heat of the south.

Looks like Casino is the right choice. Thanks everybody! Carol, how does you friend's Casino bloom there in SC? You know what I mean. lol When in the spring does it start? Does it have a big flush and then nothing for a while, or steady blooms or??? Your climate is about as close to mine as I can get, so whatever hers does, mine will probably do the same. I want to make sure I match a good clematis to Casino's rhythm. Thanks! Gayle
