I ordered my first own root roses from Northland Rosarium several years ago. Then I wanted a few that only Roses Unlimited had. To me, their sizes were basically the same....as was the packaging & promptness in delivery etc. Both places were great. Unless things have changed since I ordered from them about 4 years ago, they should be a nice size and very healthy, just like RU's!

Oh, I hope you are right, phy. I love RU's roses, so anything like those would make me quite happy. Thanks for the info.--now I can quit worrying about it. LOL

Just another word of reassurance - I have ordered a couple of times from Northland, and have been very happy with the size of the plants. Big healthy own-roots, and most of mine have done very well. I'm sure you'll be pleased!

Kate, If you expect the plants Northland supplies to be essentially the same size as RU's, you may be disappointed.

Northland's roses are bands, shipped in band-size pots. However, they routinely ship the largest, most well-developed bands I've ever received (and I'd be hard-pressed to name a vendor that I HAVEN'T ordered from).

I think you'll be pleased with your Northland order. In my estimation, Northland's bands are in a class by themselves -- on the high end of the continuum between the own-root plants that RU & ARE ship, and the small rooted cuttings that I've come to expect from some vendors.

I ordered from Northland roses about 4 years ago, as it was one of the only places I could find the wonderful old hybrid tea Silver Jubilee and one of the Romanticas (I forgot which one). Silver Jubilee was a strong healthy band and it has thrived in my zone 5 garden. The Romantica was a smaller band, and the owner of Northland Rosarium refused to charge me for it because he felt it wasn't up to his usual quality of roses. That's the kind of service you can probably still expect. I'd order from then any time. BTW, Silver Jubilee is a wonderfully hardy, disease resistant hybrid tea (I don't usually bother with them otherwise).

Where did carrie's post go? I read it just a few minutes ago and went, as she directed, over to the photo gallery to view her image of Memorie/Ice Cream (it was beautiful), but when I came back here, carrie's post was gone.

Maybe she never was here and I've turned psychic? Somehow I knew exactly where to find the image. Hmmmmmm.

Thanks, everyone, for the input on size. Large? small? sigh. Guess I better just focus on how healthy my new rose will be. My psychic powers are failing me on this issue. LOL

Oh, how to feel foolish--at least I'm among friends and therefore can declare rose fever or something like that and even get away with it!
