Zone 10 Roses...what are your favs?

Im getting ready to start ordering and Im not sure on whats the best for this area. Ive been looking thru oodles and oodles and Im lost what are your favorites for this zone?

Angela----What part of S. FL are you at? I live in Port St. Lucie. I try to grow a little bit of everything. I've been doing my rose thing since the mid 1970's so I have seen quite a bit of different roses down here. There are a few really great roses for our area. OGR's that don't get out of hand; Souv. de la Malmaison, Pink Pet. Shrubs; Belindas Dream, most David Austin roses, but a lot of them get HUGE. Climbers; Don Jaun, Caciano, Prosperty (huge shrub). HT's; MOST!! I like Louise Estes, Granada, Pop Warner, Moonstone, St. Patrick, Brinessa. It mostly depends what you want out of a HT. Florabunda's; Almost all. Mini-floras; All of them that are grafted on to fortuniana root stock. Minis; All. Polyantha's; Almost all. If you're in the area give me a buzz (e-mail). I TRY to check my e-mail at least 3 times a week.

ken, I'd be curious to know what you'd recommend for me: I live in a townhouse on Hutchinson Island with a SW exposure and I'm looking for something that will survive out here: very heat tolerant, good repeat bloomer and fragrance are the most important. I'd prefer something pink, ivory or white. What would you suggest?

When I was a kid[many years ago]I used to make mudpies. Loved to play in the dirt,climb rocks,ride wild horses.Was sort of a tomboy,no girls in my neighborhood. In jr. highschool they used to call me witch.Don't know why. Now it seems I'm doing a second childhood, playing in the mud.I like these results much better.My favorite project is, like sarasaid,the one I'm currently working. This one is a water feature.It is a sphere[two bowls,mortared together.with a cut out].Mounted on a pedestal cast from the same bowl mold.The pedestal has 4 semicircles cut out so it has legs, these legs have been fortilied to provide the strength to support the sphere. It will be painted black inside,hold water,with glass 'rocks' at the bottom and a floating candle in it. I have great hopes for it. Don't know if I should paint the outside or not. I'm still trying to learn my son's camera so I can't post pictures, maybe one day I can.

Your fav. fragrant roses for cut flower

I bought Jude the Obscure after reading about its fragrance on this forum. I didn't really smell a lot initially and I was questioning my nose. Then I cut a bloom and got it inside. I was so pleased. It definetly is the most fragrant among the 7 Austins I bought this year. It did well in a vase too (maybe couple of days). Last few weeks I am actually beginning to get the fragrance when I walk by the plant, there are several blooms & the wafting fragrance is awesome. Not an Austin but I love Dame de Couer for its vase life and its fragrant too. It went for almost a week in a vase.

Hard to nail a favorite "first" since the Hellebores seem to start in December and just keep going all winter! One of my favorites in Hamamelis 'Arnold Promise', not just because of it's early and unexpected bloom, but because I happened to site it right next to an Ilex verticillata, still brimming with bright red berries - so the combination is exhilarating. . . And to the responder who was speculating about crawling about on hands-and-knees to view those downward-facing hellebores: many, many years ago, a very clever little old lady showed me how she dealt with that in her garden - by placing little 6" round mirrors on the ground (even in the snow!) under the blooms. . . Those old-timers really had it all figured out - that little old lady next door had this little tyke completely hooked on gardening at the age of seven ! Carl

Mom, you might want to slip over to the Carolina forum, a subset of the Southern Gardening Forum. Very active and we have 2 subforums for Conversations as well as Exchanges. Zone 7/8 in Charlotte is on the southside close to SC and also in Union County near SC. The vinca referred to is the annual flowering type, not the groundcover with the pretty lilac colored blooms(spring). My best reseeders this year have been datura (highly toxic)and perennial ageratum that blooms the same time as my blackeyed susans. The BES are thugs,spreading wildly so they cover a good 6-10 square intersperced with the blueviolet frothy blooms of the ageratum and at the same height. Good for an English garden appearance but hard to keep inbounds in a less deep border. The verbena B. comes up everywhere and grows thinly about 3-4' tall/spindly. The goldfinches adore the seedheads and watching them do their gymnastics to hold on to the swaying plant while feeding is fun to watch. Gloriosa daisy is a very dependable reseeder. My first came down as seeds from Ct. in 1985 and have moved two more times. Excellent,long lasting cut flowers but they don't flower much beyond the first flush of blooms (now). In your shady/part shady areas you can have great luck with coleus. Get the biggest plant you can find(bushy) and take cuttings and put them in plastic cups of water. In two weeks you'll have them all rooted (just plain water) and ready to put in the soil. Are you somewhere where there are deer and/or rabbits? 'wonbyherwits' has great blogs and garden photos on how she deals with the critters and a spectacular landscape.

Angela, My current favorites are Belinda's Dream, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Julia Child, Ambridge Rose, Day Breaker, Traviata, Mary Magdeline. Fairly new to my garden are Hot Cocoa, Simply Marvelous, Black Cherry, 16 Candles. They are all doing well now that it has cooled some. As Ken said, if at all possible get them on fortuniana.

writersblock-----I know a lady who lives in N.Vero Beach. Her back yard is on the ocean and she grows about 65 roses. Mostly HT's with a few climbers and shrubs mixed in. Her roses and bushs are beautiful, so don't let anyone tell you that you can't grow good roses on the ocean. For you I would suggest 2 or 3 Belinda's Dream. After a few years these roses will get big and full (6x6x6). Secret also does very well on the beach. Pope John Paul looks like it is going to like Florida. The only place that I know where you can get PJP on fortuniana is K&M Nursery. If you like the color, Granada does great in FL.

Thanks, ken. Yeah, I know roses will grow on the ocean. I did very well on a 16th floor balcony in Miami Beach for years with container grown Don Juan, Double Delight, White Christmas, and the more boring Peace varieties. My parents lived on Sanibel and they had the most enormous Queen Elizabeth you ever saw, growing in sand, pretty much.

Thanks for the tip on K&M. i do like PJP.

I'm a relatively new FLORIDA rose gardener (I grew roses up in zone 4/5 for almost 24 years). I'm going to try to stick with roses that don't need to be sprayed preventively for blackspot. I'm finding chinas and some teas seem to be spot free. Souv. de la Malmaison also is spot free in my yard. :-) I heard noisettes do well here too but I don't have room for them. :-(
