Securing New Dawn to Birdhouse post

I am trying to find something to attach my New Dawn rose canes to a newly installed bird house post. Im trying to train the canes to go around it. What can I attach to the post that will hold up the canes? I don't want to use anything that can slip down like panyhose. I need something that can be drilled into the post. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My suggestion would be to move New Dawn to a 20' stretch of fence or to a stout tree. It is too vigorous and too stiff for a post.

My New Dawns bloom all along the canes. But mine had been pruned back last year and transplanted. This spring their canes have not as of yet grown long enough to be attached to the chainlenght fence I want to cover with this rose. Still I see many buds forming all along the young canes which are newly emerging. For several years I grew some New Dawn Sport cultivar named "Awakening'. I let the canes ranble along a berm, and they also seemed to bloom all along their cains for the entire mid spring, summer and fall. New Dawn should do the same for you. Plant your New Dawn and keep it pruned to only the number of canes you desire to climb up the post. Then at the top of the structure the healthy canes will amaze you at how full they send out lateral growth from each cane and fill the entire stucture with blooms. Just remember to keep the canes pruned away at the base of the ND roses whereever they try to grow new canes from the graft bud and in directions away from the post upon which you are desiring to attach the canes. Even if after training the New Dawn up the post, you chosse to move the New Dawn to a different location, simply prune back the canes drastically and transpalnt it to your prefered location. They are strong growers and can handle the adjustment easily.

Interesting that you mentioned that, Florence. My Nur Mahal has proven to tolerate shade well too. And a bit of partial shade helps keep its blooms from crisping so fast from hot summer sun too. Here in Texas, the plant loves full sun as much as all roses do, but our summer sun fries its beautiful blooms very quickly. So, thankfully, it does partial sun well. It's the only rose I've ever been successful at epaliering against a privacy fence. A fairly vigorous habit that is also very easy to maintain. Mine is 100% thornless, so that helps too. Prune it with your bare hands without a single scratch. Mine does have some scent, but its definitely not strong to my nose. That surprised me when I first got it, because Liz Druitt says it's very strong to her nose. But we all know noses are weird like that, because some people say they can't smell 'Heritage' when it's always present and always strong to me.

Sorry I haven't posted before this, I have been recovering from jet lag after my trip and sorting out the house, etc. There were two wondedrful boxes waiting for me at the post office when I got back from England, and they were both full of lovely presents. The first was from lunamoon, and it contained a large packet of all kinds of seeds, including white liatris (I winter sowed the purple last year, now I have white too, yippee!) and some columbines, and a great assortment of all sorts of others to add to my stash. There was also a lovely desk set, containing a journal, address book (I really needed one of those, didn't realize it) and a memopad. Then a loofah sponge and some body wash and body lotion and sweetpea-scented bath salts. Rose, lavender, and hazelnut coffee scented candles, a really cute pair of cat earrings and a beautiful copper and stained glass butterfly, that is already out in the butterfly garden. The second package was from mamabirrd and contained some lovely treasures. A country-style painted wooden shelf with knobs and painted teacups and teapot (I really loved that!), a cute chicken pincushion, a new pair of gardening gloves (always useful!) a Garden sign with arrow pointing the way to the garden, and a beautiful glass bluebird. I want everyone to know that I will treasure my time spent as Special Person of the Month. I got some great presents, and have made some friendships here, and now am looking forward to putting a great box together for dawnb. Went shopping the other day and found some cute things to send, but have still more shopping to do. Not real sure what a Fossil tin is, but I am sure I can find some great stuff to send. Ok so I guess the birdhouse will eentually look like it is floating in a sea of New Dawn! I have it already planted about 2-3 feet away from my fence...is that too far away from the fence? Should I move it closer?

Hi Lauren,

You don't write where you live in the US, but in Zone 5 or higher, 2-3' should be fine. If you train the canes along the fence, you'll have a spectacular display of blooms. Enjoy.

A new climber may make bushy growth the first year. You can leave this to help cover the bare legs that will develop later. Once established, ND will begin producing powerful shoots from the base that will grow 8'-15' before stopping with a cluster of blooms. Let these grow out until they are fibrous--don't try to bend the glassy new growth out near the tips. Then bend the cane down in a shallow arc and tie it down. If it is a tall fence, create a fan of canes at different levels, setting the first long canes down low if you can bend that far.

Later these primary canes will produce weak lateral shoots all along their length that will bear flowers, especially in spring, but some through the summer and fall. Cut these lateral shoots back to a couple of leaves after the blooms fade. There will also be some stronger (3'-8') lateral (secondary) shoots. You can cut these out after blooming to preserve the lines of the fan--or tie some of them down to fill in gaps if you wish.

If the fence is an open mesh, don't weave the canes into the fence but rather tie them. I use thick, soft, brown twine. If there's nothing to tie to, stud the fence with screw eyes or run thick wires horizontally.

After several years, you can remove a few of the oldest canes at the base each year at spring pruning time or just after flowering. The best bloom comes on canes that are 2-4 years old. Also ND will overgrow and become an impenetrable tangle if you don't thin it out occasionally.
