Do Koi eat more than goldfish?
Comments (13)midwest, you can tell if they are not getting enough. Slow growth rate is one sign....but that may not be such a bad thing for smaller ponds. When they are REALLY getting too little feed, you may notice the head seems larger in proportion to the rest of the fish. A healthy male koi body's will taper out a little from behind the skull, a female will taper out a lot. Healthy females are built just like a torpedo. In a fish that is starving, you will see the body dip in right behind the skull. I'll see if I can find some pictures on the web somewhere of what a starving fish looks like. But the big head is a pretty obvious sign....See MoreTotally OT: A blue heron & my fish ponds
Comments (15)Jenn, My weekend television (and as far as I know, my backyard) was "alien" free! LOL Judith, Glad you're feeling up to posting a little. Sorry to hear you've probably decided to not build a pond. Right now since it's below freezing I dread going out to do any work on my ponds, but come warmer weather I'll sure enjoy the benefits. Gagesgranny, Some type of cover is the best way to protect the babies. I have used the black plastic bird & deer netting in the past, but only in the winter to stop leaves. Looks like it will be become a more permanant fixture around here. Sue, I don't understand the banning of koi and not goldfish in a lot of places as I thought one was as potentially as much a hazard as the other, but I'm no expert either. I read about the koi being seized from a restaurant and was also happy to read they had been given back to the owner. My goldfish are just as special to me as my koi are so both are fun to have....See MoreMy goldfish is sick, what is wrong with it?
Comments (0)I have ruled out environmental factor with my sick fish. It has a bacterial infection, bloat, or a parasite infection. I have tried again to include photos of the holes and lumps in my fish. I am using anti-parasitic food, but the fish will not eat it. It am trying some Pima Fix for the bacterial infection. I used a little aquari-sol in a vain attempt to do something for parasites. I cannot afford to buy anything else for treatment right now. I only have the aquiari-sol and the anti-parasite food the fish will not eat. Should I wait until the morning, when the fish is hungrier? I got the fish that is sick in quarantine now. What else can I do? I have some epson salts for feet. Should I use it? If so, how do I use it properly? Pictures included below. Thank you....See MoreNeed advice on feeding my goldfish as the temps drop.
Comments (8)I appreciate all the advice. It has been in the 60s and 50s here, and I'm feeding the goldfish less. If the water in the pool is in the 60's and it is early in the day I toss them a few flakes or a portion of a frozen food cube. On days when the temp is in the 50s, they do indeed seem to be uninterested in food. Now that I am closer to bringing my fish indoors for the winter, I have a new worry, and that is "my" frogs. A few used to hang out in and around the pool, but now there seems to be a single small green frog left. Will this frog know enough to go off and find water with mud to hibernate under once I dismantle the pool? Normally we have a brook about 50 feet from where the goldfish pool is, but because of the drought, it is dry. Should I capture and move my little green friend about an eighth of a mile down the road to a brook that still contains water, or is it better to let the frog find its own way?...See Morepikecoe
